Here's another charcoal drawing I did for my doctor friend Veronica Stopforth. It portrais a few Quiver Trees, Aloidendron dichotomum. This is a huge succulent, reaching 7 m in height and developing a very thick trunk. It is one of the aloes, though recently put in a separate genus along with a few other tree-size aloes. It grows in the dry regions of the Northern Cape province of South Africa, and also in southern Namibia. The name comes from the practice of San people who used hollowed-out branches of these trees for making quivers to hold their poisoned arrows. These are some of the largest desert plants and thus are used by Sociable Weavers, the birds who make the largest nests - these enormous communal nests can hold dozens or hundreds of weaver families.
