Description
After much frustration with different watercolor surfaces, I finally decided to try illustration board again. This is my first illustration board watercolor in about 2 years. It seems a lot of the frustrations I had with it before have gone away. Or, perhaps my technique has simply changed. There's something exhilarating about standing atop a mountain and feeling the wind surround you. Even though I know I'd fall like a stone, I've entertained the thought of leaping off and wondering what it would be like to fly. Iolani, luckily, has a pair of gryphon's wings to lift her. Also, in case anyone's curious, the title has to do with her rank among the Riders.
I also took this as an opportunity to redesign her gryphon. :3 Greenish bronze patina plumage...
Watercolor on Strathmore heavyweight illustration board, 7.5 X 13 inches

Stunning! I love the colors and detail; you really get the feeling from their positioning that they would fall off without taking care to stay put! I like that the gryphon has ears! Never seen that particular addition before (haven't looked at alot of gryphon art) and I find it to be quite charming! His immense size is also a great detail - larger than lion (life)!

Impressive. Especially that the female rider has clothes, that's not something you see every day.

Ahahaha I can't stand it in fantasy art when you have a female warrior and she's wearing essentially a bikini. How does that offer her any protection in battle whatsoever? Not to mention, if Iolani here was riding her gryphon above the clouds, she'd freeze to death.

Indeed, very tiring.
But - Iolani? I have a flying creature-character which I have yet to decide a name for, but two of the ones I'm thinking of are Aolani and Iolana (Hawaiian).

It is indeed a wonderful name. I chose "Iolani" because of the meaning (heavenly hawk) and didn't realize it was such a used name in the state until a little while later.
I may in the future adjust her name to be less...recognizable :3

I'm not sure why but I've never been a big fan of water color paper, most of my work is mixed with pencils and ink I suppose that has a lot to do about it, besides the saturation aspect though I'd rather work on a smooth for water colors, I'm glad you enjoyed it too! ^_^

I love the details too, you did an amazing job with them! did you do the background 'from your head' or did you use any reference?

This is really good. You have lots of detail in here and that's hard to do in watercolor (at least for me). Great work!
