The naginata was developed for women users during the sengoku jidai.
Instead of the yari the naginata excelled better against cav, plus it's long reach and blade length made it the favourite weapon of women when their husbands/sons were send to war.
There were a lot of bandits back in those times.

Yeah, naginata has more reach than sword and strikes heavier (but slower)! Guys use heavier naginata.
Pole arms are effective against calvary (Europeans used pikes), but yari became more popular later on because army started crossing multiple spears in formation to stop calvary.
