Maximum Carnage - part 3:

In an attempt to level up his powers and become a more potent threat to Spider-Man, Jason Macendale, the usurper of the Hobgoblin mantle, willingly sold his soul to a powerful demon. In exchange, Hobgoblin was bonded to a lesser, unnamed demon. At first, beyond gaining demonic skin and eyes, Macendale was elated with his new powers. Stronger, faster, able to create his weapons out of pure hellfire, Hobgoblin seemed to be enjoying his power-up.

But being possessed by a demon is not as fun as it sounds, kids. Ask Tom Cruise.

The two entities began to fight over control, the Hobgoblin eventually was able to exorcise his hellspawned parasite (losing his new powers in the process). But the demon didn't die, it became it's own, darker reflection of Hobby, dubbing itself the Demogoblin. A seriously stupid name, but give it a break, it's evil, but that doesn't mean it's good at names.

Thinking itself on some sort of Holy Mission, the Demogoblin immediately got into lots of trouble and fought not only Spider-Man and Hobgoblin, but Moon Knight, Ghost Rider and others in a series of misadventures. But soon after he joined with Carnage and Shriek and other villains during Maximum Carnage, a killing spree spread over Manhattan, killing hundreds. In-fighting lead to the bloody "family" falling apart. Thanksgiving was weird and uncomfortable after that.

Eventually, though literally a demon from Hell, Demogoblin sacrificed his own life to save an innocent child during a battle with Hobgoblin, being crushed literally by a church. Talk about on-the-nose.
