Description

When a writer puts his soul and passion into his work.
It will go unnoticed, often because of its length.
It is a rather sad fact, but a truth nonetheless.
For the simple emotions conveyed in just a few words,
Often hold more sway with those who are emotionally swayed.
There is no depth of the heart, nor a single thought spared.
For the effort placed into a piece that forgoes the winning edge,
For a hint of true meaning.
You will not read this piece and I will not expect you to.
It will not be popular or famous, nor will it see the light of day.
For length is the bane of true poetry,
And that is why so many of my kin have already left.
Thank you however, for reading this;
For you at least took the time to see what I would consider 'truth'.
It is bitter indeed and intensely sad,
But for the you that respects this, I am eternally glad.

This should be in an anthology. Β I think poets and short fiction writers are greatly under appreciated on sites like this. Β And I say that from experience as a short fiction writer myself.

Not only did I read this, I didn't regret it. It was awesome! and yes it is true! Your completely right about the unnoticed portion of writing, i've written some pretty long proses that i'm too much of a PAB to post up because no one will read it or care to even enjoy it.Β Thanks for making light of this!

I never really realized this until I spent more time with writers on DA, because I've actually always really hated short stories and poems; they're a bloody tease, always ending just when things are about to get really good. I don't like withholding So I specifically search out and save up long works, and often delete short ones without really paying much attention to them, unless I know the artist well. To each their own I guess

It's sad but true. I have a Bookmarks folder full of online works that are too long for me to read in one sitting.

This is so true! I know I'm guilty of it, skipping past works that are too long or have common titles--heck, I probably would've skipped past yours if your title wasn't so eye-catching... and it is a shame cause we are all artists of something and our works should be viewed!--No matter the length, the relevance, or deepness.
No matter the kind of writing, I like works with a message. So, when it comes to poetry, I look for how the writer is presenting and conveying their message.

I understand your plight, i wish there was somthing i as a writer could do. But at the same time im happy, for the ones tat actuly take the time to read what we have to say, for they are the ones im trying to inspire, the ones that will stick with me intell the end. As someone once said "i dont want to be heard, i want to be listened to"

It's so true. People these days are lazy. These days people think they don't have time. So instead they look at art. 'cause they think it can take longer to see that than a poem. I know sometimes I'm guilty of it myself. And I'm a writer. It's sad and pathetic. But I am so glad you wrote this and so glad I read this. I wish more people thought about this. Keep writing.Β

The first (and so far only) poem I've ever posted to this site was about how it feels for me to be a writer, and this came up suggested for me on my side bar. You've captured it...this is exactly what I've always felt. I couldn't have put it better myself. Β

I use dA as a sort of training position. Rather than write eloquent long pieces, I try and sharpen the stake. I write my thoughts, or my experiences in short paragraphs or a poem and sometimes they do get noticed. xD That's the neat thing about it, I suppose. Getting noticed when you deserve it, not because you want it.
Unless you do want it. Then other places than dA might be helpful. xD
I do wish people would take the time to read longer pieces though; I think beginner and possibly older, more well-versed artists are often skipped over because of the length in their pieces.

WordOfChen In reply to Lapulta [2014-05-29 02:39:39 +0000 UTC]
It depends, some veteran artists do shorter pieces as well, but they usually have a good range to back it up. It's the one-trick ponies that keep flogging the dead horse which become a problem x'D

There are many things that point to a shorter attention span in general, in many people today. Character restriction length for posts, lessΒ sophisticated sentence structures in popular fiction, hastier endings, etc.Β But I think there is a difference between length and long-windedness. If people don't go into something prepared to dedicate time and brainpower to it, of course they will be turned off by extensive writing. But there can also be "true meaning" in brevity, if it is not merely sentimental similes and metaphors without substance. It's probably more difficult to capture attention since it's easier for anyone to publish anything (online, at least), but if they don't care to listen, are they the targeted audience in the first place?

WordOfChen In reply to Parallaxm [2014-05-26 15:47:54 +0000 UTC]
You bring up many interesting points :'3 Of course, when you're looking at getting your writing seen, you should definitely target the right audience. However the purpose of me writing this was more to vent my frustration at the shorter pieces over-taking longer ones. As evidenced by my six word story owning all my raps haha.
I accept it, but it still sucks a little x'D
