Description
After seeing the new starters for the 5th pokémon generation, I've wanted to draw them out.I think that they have actually pretty awesome designs, I really like them, but on the other hand I also think (my own humble opinion) they are drawn pretty badly. The grass starter's (which Japanese name seems to be Tsutarja) face is rather weird and the poor water cub (Mijumaru) has a golf ball instead of a head for example. But if you just bother to scratch away the layer of kawaiidesu-ness, the actual designs underneath are pretty neat. The color scemes work well together, there seems to be a trend of tri-color going on (the orange and black on the pig (Pokabu), with a yellow detail, the pale yellow and warm green on the reptile, with warm yellow details, and light blue and white with dark blue details on the otter) which seems to be well balanced out, and the species choices themselves look interesting (my humble biased opinion, though, I like pigs).
Gee, I can't wait to see what their fully evolved forms look like. These are already promising (big pig = tusks).
So, here are my versions, with a touch of beliveability thrown in (in other words: a tiny bit of anatomical sense). I didn't give the grass one leg tructure since its official title is "grass SNAKE pokémon", so I made them not actual limbs evolved for walking, but instead sort of projections similar to its neck collar thingies, that have developed to support the creature's weight instead of being just for display. Plus the legs it has on the original design would be rather hard to give real leg bones into, since I would have had to make the legs up completely instead of just interpreting. I'm not one of those people who think pokémon should always be portrayed as real life animals (I don't see umbreon as a cat or as a fox, as in my eyes umbreon in an umbreon), I prefer to use the original design, but make it more beliveable than completely changing things for my own liking.
End of randomeness.
Pokémon are (c) to Nintendo and stuff.
Drawn with Copic markers
EDIT: As the games have been released in west, their names should now be Tepig, Snivy and Oshawott.

I'm sorry for commenting on an older picture but I just wanted to say that I agree with you! I don't see Pokémon as animals, I see them as Pokémon. I don't like when a realistic Pokémon is just an animal with weird colors. I really like how you drew the starters here. They look realistic but don't stray far from the original design

Wow, your words "I'm not one of those people who think pokémon should always be portrayed as real life animals (I don't see umbreon as a cat or as a fox, as in my eyes umbreon in an umbreon), I prefer to use the original design, but make it more beliveable than completely changing things for my own liking." really made me think. Pokemon ARNT animals, they are pokemon. I always imagine pokemon as certain animals. But they arnt. I need to start thinking more like you ~ thanks you, youve really made me more insightful to pokemon. And I love the water starter *glomps it*

Yeah, I have always thought of them as interesting creatures, and not as much as animals. I've seen several cases of people complaining how this and that pokémon doesn't look like the animal they are thought to represent, completely missing the point of the creature itself. Like that stantler is ugly because it's not drawn as a real deer. I've even seen people draw kadabra and it's evolutions as foxes with just some funny markings, completely ignoring their spiffy exoskeleton. Personally I prefer to look at the 'mons as the 'mons, and not judging them by what they seem to resemble.
Thank yous. I'm glad you like my drawing. (And thoughts.)

I like the way you've got them all drawn out and colored as opposed to the way they actually look. n_n

My qualm with Mijumaru is that it is poorly drawn in its official artwork. As such your Mijumaru looks great, but looks like a beaver with that flat tail, it is actually an otter.
This is not a criticism of your work, rather Ken Sugimori's. You've done a fantastic job.

I don't reall like the new starters but in your style they look great.
I love the coloration and the fire very much.
The fur of the water starter is also very well done.^^

Thank yous! ^^ I think the issue with the new starters isn't that they'd be specially ugly or anything, but they sure look dumb in the original art. The drawing style makes them look bad.

Yeah, the grass one got more subtle corrections than the others, but then again, it is a snake, so there was no need for fur details or sturdy limbs or anything.

The fur detail was a nice touch

Hmm, some scale details could probably look nice. Maybe I'll try that one sometime.

I really like your drawings of these guys. I also like that you are able to show and appreciate the interesting qualities about the new starters. I think the default reaction to new pokemon these days is "ugh," but you're able to prove here that they're worth a second glance.
In this drawing, I would have to say the water one looks the best.
The otter pup looks fantastic compared to his official art, yet you didn't make any major changes to his design. I think this piece really gives the starters a "cleaner" look than what we've been shown in the official artwork.
The added detail with the fur looks nice, but I wonder if it would be a good idea to add the impression of scales onto the snake's body?
Besides that, I don't think I have any more comments about this. Great job!

Heh, I've noticed that it's always the "ugh" at first. I remember the hassle when the fourth generation was released, and people were highly against the new pokémon ("monkey who's butt is on fire? Eww!" or "that balloon headed penguin looks dumb") but when you look at them now, it's funny how many people ended up accepting them when they had been around for a while, specially their bigger forms. Sure there are 'mons in the newer generations that I don't like much, but then again my number one on the list of least liked pokémon is Mr. Mime, and that is all the way back in gen 1.
Hmm, the grass one might look rather nice with a bit of scaly details, yes. Maybe I'll try it out sometime.
Thank yous so much for the comment!
