Hooray, lack of motivation strikes again!Rough interior shot because I was bored. I've had the urge to draw, but never enough motivation to keep going for more than about 2 minutes. Does this happen to anyone else? So anyway I've had this sitting on the desk beside me all afternoon and just been scribbling on it when the urge takes me.
The idea was for a sort of hotel/resort reception area for the tropics/sub-tropics, with an emphasis on passive lighting and cooling... because aircon ist teh DEVIL!
Unfortunately both Saber and the fabric installation thing up the back were kinda a bit afterthought-ish "hey, I've got space that needs filling".
I could go more in-depth about the design elements I used, but I'm quite certain no-one actually cares.
I guess Ron Arad was right: boredom truly is the mother of all creativity

Hey now, I care! Of course, that's probably because this stuff is up my alley! Great interior shot, you've convinced me you have designed a pleasant space to occupy... which is always priority number one with such renderings

Cheers mate.
Hmm, well if you're interested in a quick rundown (tries to remember back to what he was thinking at the time): Basically the whole space is open at the top with the wall on the left being the northerly aspect (assuming it's built south of the equator). That should create a solar chimney effect, heating the air in the upper space and letting it exit out under the roof. The Bar area on the left would be entirely open, probably looking out over a pool or something so that the convection effect can draw cooler air from above the water. The big semi-transparent thing behind the seats was meant to be a glass pane with water running down it to cool air entering the lobby area, but I ain't so sure about that one anymore (it's energy intensive and could quite possibly fuck up the airflow by putting a bigarse slab of glass in the way). You can't see it but the slab for the lobby area sits out a bit from the rear wall as well to try and get some airflow past there as well. That lobby slab is quite thick (something in the order of two to three feet) and tiled in probably marble or granite to create a cooling thermal mass.
Thin windows on the northern aspect allow light in whilst keeping transmitted heat down and the light cloth sunshades should soften what comes through them. Large windows on the southern aspect are to create a sense of space and let additional light in.
Aaaand I've started writing an essay... sorry It's probably flawed on so many levels, but meh.

It sounds like you have designed a pretty solid stack ventilation systemβ¦ and using the large pool in front of the lower air intake (open bar area) would be great for passive cooling Whether or not the air flow would quite work is something youβd have to test in a computer or in miniatureβ¦ but the principles are sound, and it seems like they could work in your application. Props for all the thought that went into this pic!!
(nice day lighting scheme too!!)

From scratch, completely (ok, well barring using Saber of course ). I really enjoy trying (emphasis on "trying") to use backgrounds and stuff to create space and and atmosphere. Plus designing space is just plain fun

It looks good mate, I really like the design. Most of the hotels around my city are really small and cramped, but this design you have really gives off that feeling of relaxation and freedom to move. Another thing is this really looks like an oceanside lobby.
For some reason, I also really like those sheets, really Art-Deco
Keep up the good stuff mate (btw, sorry I haven't been commenting much, I was busy finishing off my last classes at TAFE.)

I agree. It definitely has that convention like appeal about it, like ol' Expo '88. Loved being there.
So what's this about aircons being a work of teh DEVIL?! *crack of thunder with Roff's wobble board* ... sorry.

wraith11 In reply to Aikurisu [2007-12-09 13:04:44 +0000 UTC]
Ahh, Expo... I was only 1 at the time but I've heard a lot about it. The Old Bloke was involved in the construction
Woo! Herculean wobble board Basically, if a building is designed properly, with plenty of insulation, cross ventilation and passive cooling, aircon shouldn't be unnecessary. Problem is that it's an easy way out so most buildings are designed like shit (mostly by Victorians for Victorian climates, not Queensland) so have to use masses of power and energy running air conditioning systems, which is a waste of money and resources. The other problem is that society now seems to believe it needs aircon to be comfortable. It's a pet hate of our ID lecturer and it's sort of rubbed off on us

Aikurisu In reply to wraith11 [2007-12-11 15:48:02 +0000 UTC]
Haha, understandable. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of aircons either, unless if it's for trips in a car. While going into a supermarket on a hot day is greatly refreshing, the conspiracy side of things starts to kick in, when I start to feel drowsy from it. It's worse at last minute Christmas shopping too. In the shopping center in Rockhampton, it gets to the point where you can hardly breath.
That Expo was bloody awesome. Back in an age where everything was cool, movies were still fresh and original, 3D glasses were in, and when the DeLorean was still running on 1.21 gigawatts of electricity.

thats really cool, it reminds me of one of the markets in Pakistan i went to, with the really nice proper village stalls and the fabric hanging down everywhere, and then there's always someone walking down with a suitcase.
It also kinda reminds me of Agrabah as in Aladdin Agrabah, man i love that movie...

Hmm, Pakistan... now there's somewhere I wouldn't mind taking a holiday. I guess the fabric shades make sense though in the tropical climate though. I mean, they give good shade whilst allowing plenty of airflow, not to mention look pretty funky.

I've been on vacation leave for 6 days and have not finished anything... you kinda doodle around forever then just as you start to really work some better idea comes- start that and then before you know it's time to go to the pub and nothing gets done
Nice work though. Reminds me of a hotel I've been too... those cloth things in the ceiling, and passive cooling for the win! I hate aircon X_X

Yep, passive cooling all the way. Not only do you get lots of lovely fresh air (like driving with the window down ) but it saves masses on the power bill as well

Awesome perspective, the depth of the "shot" of this picture is great. Insta fav! Creative problems aside, I think you just needed some kind of inspiration. At least you finished the lineart, neh?
It does look like a reception hall for a hotel, but the fabric sunscreen reminded me of a trip to Jerusalem where they used same said blankets to provide shade for the customers. Either way, it comes across very nice. Good ambience. Wouldn't mind a more "in-depth", detailed...maybe colored version.
Aircon is a necessary evil, if you ask me.
I couldn't have guessed Saber was one of the last parts put in, she fits quite well. Little Ms. Pendragon is what gave the picture a measure for the height and overall area of the scene. Kudos.
And yes, I agree...but I think all you need is just inspiration. ^^v

wraith11 In reply to spectrelead [2007-12-05 13:13:19 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, finished the lineart... but it took me all afternoon
Ha yes, middle-eastern use of the fabric. I've always loved the look of the bazaars with the shade cloths hanging over them, very cool stuff. Might colour it, I've got some other colour projects running at the moment, but for some reason can't bring myself just to sit down and get stuck into them... which is what I really need to do
As for aircon: I've lived happily through plenty of summers without it. That said: our house is in a semi "Queenslander" style, so it's got good airflow and plenty of shade. But honestly, I reckon with a bit of well applied design aircon isn't necessary in a building... but the whole thing generally has to be designed to work without it from scratch.
Heh, if you look closely you can seen sketch lines for desks and pillars through Saber But you're right: gotta have something human in there to give a sense of scale to everything else.

Well, I'm sure that when you do color your work, it's going to be great.
Quite. Unfortunately, I've got a nice little 15th flr condo in the middle of the proverbial capital city, so the smoggy air and general pollution means I need a controlled environment. Good for you on your area, I've seen tons of Discovery specials on Australia and the north eastern area, specifically Queensland, is quite the heaven. Ode to the Great Barrier Reef and all...
LOL, true. I might actually suggest more "people" figures in the pic, but that's me. ^^v
