Description
“Not yet...”
This words were the first words he heard, when he was born. It weren't the words of his mother or the other Fumis around him, nor the words of the humans. The words echoed in his mind before he opened his eyes for the first time.
He never forgot them.
Jerry was born in a Foghouse on the land. It was next to some fields and a farm who had the same owners like the Foghouse. His life was like a dream. No problems, no worries, just him and his “family”. It was a normal life for a Foghouse-dweller. He spent most of his days of the farm, working as a helping hand for the owners, took care of the animals, he loved to cuddle the farm cats in his break.
In the night he was with his fog. They love to play in the night. There was something special about them, they all had glowing vapor, so they created a night beautiful pictures with their vapor. Sometimes their owners would take pictures and hang them inside the foghouse. He loved this moments.
Life was perfect, life was normal.
But in a stormy night something changed.
The wind was powerful, the windows clinked, it sounded like that they would break any minute. The fog was crowed together, they all were scared. Almost all of them reacted fast when the first loud rumble was heard, running out of the house, Jerry was none of them. He was not fast enough.
Big pieces of wood were falling of the ceiling, blocked his way out. Scared he tried to find a way out, but no chance. He heard the scared voices of his fog, calling for help, trying to push the blocking wood away. Even the voices of his owners were calling for him. His heart was pounding hard in his chest.
/”I don't want to die!”/
He cried out for help. Jumped with full force against the blockade.
In this moment the ceiling brake fully down and buried him under tons of wood.
He closed his eyes in fear and jumped one last time.
“Not yet...”
Again these words. The first words he heard were the same as the last, he thought.
But was something was strange, there was no pain. He would feel pain, right?
He opened his eyes and was surprised.
What he expected was to see only wood around him, but this wasn't the case. He saw his fog members and his owners standing in front of him. Jerry was no longer in the house, he was outside of it, alive!
/”How?”/
His body was shaking, he had no feeling under his feet.
Then his mother came closer to him: “Are you real...? Are you my Jerry?”
Her voice was shaking.
It was hard to talk: “Of course! Why should I not be real?”
With her paw she pointed to a small puddle of water.
He took a look and got scared. His reflection, it showed not his normal body.
Above his head floated a glowing halo, his behind body was just a ghost whips...and he was floating?
In horror he screamed: “No. NO! Not yet, I am NOT dead!”
And with this words his body changed back into its normal form.
What happened was like a miracle. Jerry survived, because he could transform into a ghost and passed through the blockade. It took time, but everyone around him started to believe. First they were all scared, thinking it was a just dream.
But Jerry learned to control his ability to transform. And what first was strange and scary was now normal to the fog and the owners of the foghouse.
They never found any logic reason, why this happened, but they didn't care. He was alive and that was all what was important. And with his ability he could do so many new things, that helped all of them.
The terrifying night, who should end the life of Jerry, gave him a total new life.
Years passed by.
Many things happened. His mother and other died in old age. Strange men were visiting the owners and took them with them. They never came back. This was the reason why the fog decided to leave the foghouse, they knew something was wrong, the owner would never leave them alone.
But Jerry wanted to stay.
“Why are you not coming? What if these men come back?”
The fog members looked confused at him.
Jerry just smiled sad: “I am sorry... I can't come with you, not yet. Even when these people come back, I can hide. And...I just can't leave all the animals... I want them safe...”
It was a shock for the fog, they wanted to leave together. But they respected his choice. He was right, he could hide easy.
Then night had come, when the fog wanted to leave.
One last time, they created with their vapor a glowing cloud. It was beautiful.
“I will follow you, when the animals are safe...”, he said to the fogleader.
“Be safe, we will waiting for you, always...”
He watched his fog leaving. They disappeared in the woods.
“Not yet...”, he whispered to himself.
The fog was right. The men came back, without the owners. Jerry watched them carefully from his hiding place: he was floating under the ceiling and disappeared into the wall, when they would look in his direction.
They talked to each other. He listened carefully.
“So where are these things?”
“Well maybe hiding. They have a good sense... Possible they know that were are not friendly!”
“Maybe they just need something to come out! Like noise”
The men started to throw stones against the windows, they broke.
Jerry watched in horror how the men started to break all kind of stuff. They destroyed his home.
After 30 minutes they stopped. From the foghouse was nothing really left.
“Looked like they already left, smart beasts.”
“Maybe the owners trained them to do so, if they left. They knew exactly that it is illegal to keep Fumis with restricted features...”
“Why did they even had so many?”
“I guess the got them from breeders, who want to hide them...”
Confused Jerry thought about what they said. He never heard something like restricted features before. No matter what it was, it was bad in the eyes of humans. It was the reason, why they took their owners away.
“What about the animals?”, one of the men was wandering on the farm, while the other one open their car.
“I don't care to be honest, but we have to notice some animal loving people or something like that. They will take them to other farms.”
With these words the both men drove away. Jerry was relieved. They didn't find him and the animals will be get a new home. That was what they said. For a moment he thought he could leave and follow his fog.
“Not yet...”, his own mind kept him in place.
And it was good that he stayed. Days went by. Maybe some weeks without anyone who could take the animals away. Jerry had to feed them, had to look after the water and for the cats he had to hunt some mice. Without him they would be suffer of hunger. And he couldn't not let that happened. These animals were a part of his family. But at the same time he felt sadder every day. His fog, where would they be? Will he ever be able to find them after this time?
Then one day a some trucks were driving on the farm. The doors opened with a swing and some nice looking humans came out.
“Unbelievable! How can they do that? Let us know that here are animals without caretaker, after weeks!? Hah these people are always such cruel creatures...”
“Don't let them know what you said! They write the checks!”
“But it is true. So let us find the poor animals and bring them to a new home!”
They turned to the farm and started their work. It was a big surprise, when they found out that someone took care of the animals. Jerry saw their faces, he smiled. He made sure, that they found every single animal. It was big relieve that these people really wanted to take care of the animals. But no matter how nice they looked, they worked for the people who caused all this, he must be careful. What if they would see him?
After all animals were safe in the trucks, they left. Jerry watched them, how they drove away with the last reason he was here. It was painful to let the animals go, but it was better for them. He couldn't take care of them for a long time. Now could leave the place.
He took a deep breath and looked in the sunset.
“I will leave tomorrow...Just one night...”
After all the time, Jerry was finally overwhelmed with feelings, which hide to be strong.
He had lost his loving owners, his fog and the animals he cared about.
He was sad.
What if he was not able to find his fog again?
He was scared.
What happened to his owners, what did these people done with them?
He was angry.
The last night was not peaceful, he mind was running. There was no real sleep.
And before even the sun had risen, he was already preparing his journey.
Some food, some water in easy to open bottles (the owners use those when they went for a walk) and some cloth to make a bundle. He found a map, he was not sure if he could read it, but maybe it would be useful. The last thing to do was to take the pictures. One last time he stepped in his old foghouse.
For a moment he saw all of them together, happy building this foghouse after the storm. And the reality came back and he saw his destroyed home. He sat down in the hay and looked up.
“Can I really leave? Should I really leave?”
This place was still a good place to living. He hoped that the voice who echoed in his head back when he was born and discovered his ability would say “not yet”. So he knew what he could do.
But this was not happening.
He sighed. Not an answer was still an answer.
The sun shine bright, the time had come. Jerry took his stuff.
Without looking back he ran into the forest, the same way his fog left weeks ago.
“I will find you! No matter how long it will take!”

Waaaaaah it took me four hours to write this story! >w<
I just want to explain something, it is a little bit difficult to explain:
There was a real cat named Jerry I loved really much. He died this year and I wanted to have a special memory of him, giving my memory of him a new body. I bought a commission from Lex to draw him.
And since she is the creator of the fumi world I wanted to create a little "easter egg". The voice who always said "not yet..." is Erema, the creator of the fumis in the lore. The ghost form is a present of Erema too.
It is just something I wanted to be in the story. "Not yet..." is just my idea to show this. It is a way of telling: "No Jerry I don't want that you leave yet".
Sound strange, right? I wanted to show the world how much I love him and that there is still a part of him with me.
Again, thank you Lex for giving my little friend a new form.

I loved reading this, I wonder what sort of adventure jerry will have, I hope he'll be able to find his fog again! I also enjoyed how you ended up incorporating Erema, it gives a mysterious feeling and is very fitting imo!
