Description I've been playing around with ideas for illuminations I can do for my BAM book. I'm wanting to try to do illuminations in the traditional medieval sense, with bright colors and gold leaf.

I used 2 methods and 2 styles

Top: A Pixiu with gold leaf as accents
Bottom: Chimera with real gold leaf (practice sketch [link] ).

Using gold leaf is harder to use than I thought, especially with such small pictures, and kind of messed them up. I guess its ok, because the little imperfections add character and can be seen in some medieval illuminations [link] .

Now here's where you come in:

Which do you think works better, gold as a background, or as an accent?

Please comment, I'd like to know your opinions.

Illuminations or illustrations?

Honestly, the two different methods can both be very effective, you just have to pick the sort oif image they'd go best with.

Thanks!

These would be illuMinations. I am already doing several illustrations for the individual creatures. But in the introduction page to any major family group (ex. the unicorns), I want to make a medieval-esque illumination.

Beautiful; I really love the detail on the chimera's mane.

Gold as a background.

Nice sketches as always. ^_^
