I've been playing around with ideas for illuminations I can do for my BAM book. I'm wanting to try to do illuminations in the traditional medieval sense, with bright colors and gold leaf.

I used 2 methods and 2 styles

Top: A Pixiu with gold leaf as accents
Bottom: Chimera with real gold leaf (practice sketch [link] ).

Using gold leaf is harder to use than I thought, especially with such small pictures, and kind of messed them up. I guess its ok, because the little imperfections add character and can be seen in some medieval illuminations [link] .

Now here's where you come in:

Which do you think works better, gold as a background, or as an accent?
