Working at the Superstar Daycare CH 3Chapter 3: Talking to a Robot I watched Mia hurry away. The bouncing of her hair distracted me for a bit. I could only wish to have such nice hair. So curly, so full. My thin flat hair was nothing in comparison. Wait, what was I about to do? I shake my head slightly and the hair of my bangs rustled against my eyebrows. Stop zoning out, I had to remind myself. There was an animatronic that was supposed to give me a tour. The area seemed so large it would have been nice to be shown around. But I had never spoken to a robot before. All of the advertisements for the Pizzaplex emphasized the advanced AI of all of their animatronics. “It's like they come to life!” those ads would say. So do I just... talk? “It's uh- nice to meet you, Mr. Sun,” even after I stood up I had to stretch my neck to look at his face. I could also imagine some children being afraid due to his size alone. After another chorus of clicks and clacks the robot crouched down. His hands now touched the ground and he had to look up at me. This just made me feel like I was talking to a tiger. A very calm tiger, but still, there was that bit of tension that I couldn't shake., “YES! Very nice to have new friends! You'll begin work on Monday?” The points surrounding his face swayed from side to side rhythmically and his eyes now looked to be smiling. Where Fantasy and Fun Come to Life indeed! This jester noticed anything that may have made talking uncomfortable and adapted right away. The voice even lowered in volume after I flinched at how loud it was at first. I was impressed. Although- “You- You know I start on Monday?” I didn't remember Miss Mia mentioning it earlier. A wave of chills made my grip tighter on my bag. Calm down, calm down... It's a robot. It has access to the database. Of course, it would. “The hiring officer inputted your information at 6:47 AM,” Sun's eyes changed to project question marks as he tilted his face to the side. “Would knowing more help you feel better? You look nervous.” The eyes changed yet again to look like stars, “Oh! Maybe you would like to hear a joke?”I felt all the muscles in my face moving but I couldn't tell what expression I made. It must have been a strange one since Sun's eyes cycled through a few more images before he continued. “So, so sorry, friend,” The sun lowered to face the floor, “I can wait until you are ready. Ah, but waiting is hard!” He plopped fully onto the floor with a thud. Well, now I felt bad. That must have been how Sun dealt with children who got nervous. Man, I had to pull myself together! “No, no. I'm sorry. It's okay,” I tried to get back on track, “Uh- I would like a tour around if you don't mind.” Sun sprang up spontaneously like a kernel of popcorn on the stove. I just barely held back a jump of my own. Had to keep it together. I could do it. “Yes! Of course! Where to first? The climbing blocks? Slides? Cubbies? Quiet Corner?” With each suggestion, the animatronic spun around and gestured in a different direction with a cartoony flair. The sun's rays spun around his face energetically. His eyes sparkled in delight. “Quiet Corner, please,” my voice was just barely louder than my thoughts. I almost didn't realize I had spoken out loud. Sun, however, pranced off without hesitation. I quietly followed after the dancing sun before I could lose sight of him. The way he moved made him look like he was jumping on the moon. How on Earth did Fazbear Entertainment manage to make this machine of metal behave like it weighed nothing at all? The engineers must be miracle workers, I thought. My gawking was cut short when Sun spun in place and called out in a different direction, “Mary Sue and William have signed in!” A couple of sequels of laughter soon followed along with a rustling in the ball pit. “I got it!” Miss Mia replied. Afterward, the squealing calmed down. Their energy now going toward another activity that I hoped Mia had enough time to prepare. Sun continued guiding me to a wall adjacent to the ball pit. Before long an entrance decorated with curtains caught my attention. Little constellations of stars and moons were scattered all over the curtains and wall. Above it, bold, yellow letters read “Quiet Time”. This was where Sun stopped with a flourish. His fingers elegantly glided in the air and his feet tapped to an upbeat tune. “Here we are~ The Quiet Corner is a favorite for friends who like alone time or are tired. It is also... where we take naps.” Sun's voice was jovial but it had a hint of melancholy with those last few words. I was too intrigued by this place to notice, though. How would everyone fit in there? It must be bigger than I thought it was. “Can I go in?” I attempted to move the curtains aside. They were thick and heavy. It should be nice and dark in there, I thought. I had almost peeked inside before Sun interrupted me. “NO, no, friend,” Sun waved his large hands in front of me, “It is not nap time yet!” Sun's voice almost sounded desperate underneath all of his cheerful programming. Big Xes were flashing in his eyes. “We don't need to go in there!” What was this all of a sudden? Wasn't he just happily showing it to me a moment ago? Was this the glitch that I heard about? I wasn't quite sure how to deal with this situation. “Oh, um, sorry. We can look somewhere else now,” I felt a wave of shame. I couldn't help the feeling that I had done something wrong. Something must have triggered the glitch in the Daycare Animatronic. I couldn't think of what. Was I confusing it with my behavior? I mentally scolded myself for acting so helpless. “How about a look at the playhouses? You can go inside those as much as you like!” Sun jumped back into gear and danced off into the play area. I wasn't far behind. I didn't want to break anything before I even started. I would be seeing more than my fair share of that room soon enough. I followed the jester around the whole play area. Stopping every few steps to listen to descriptions and anecdotes about the various toys and play structures. There was a bit of everything. Dramatic play, gross and fine motor activities, music and movement, reading and literacy; Anything and everything an early childcare worker would want. Now and then Sun would stop to announce that someone else had checked in. Right before I started to worry that Mia would be over the child-to-adult ratio another staff member came in. Along with her own gaggle of children. I saw her give some cash to a couple of her older children and they scampered off in a hurry. “Miss Cassandra! Welcome back!” Sun wasted no time in greeting them, “And a happy how do you do to David, Therese, and Mikey~!” The children jumped up in response to their names being called. “Good morning, Mr. Sun!” the tallest child waved politely. “Hello!” the girl tried her best to curtsy. The youngest boy waved timidly. Sun responded with some simple sign language that made the boy smile and nod. Then the three of them put their shoes away and set off together to play. I was rather impressed with how well behaved all of these children were. Their mother must be very good at her job. Either that or I was seeing them on a particularly good day. I felt like it would be rude to not say anything so I also waved, “H-hello, I'm Miss Nae-nae. I'm gonna be starting on Monday.” “That's right~ We had just finished our tour!” Sun spun around yet again, “Just in time, too. I wouldn't miss dance time for anything!” I could hear some children singing in another part of the play area: Mr. Sun, Sun.Mr. Golden Sun.Please shine down on me!These little children are asking you,To please come out so we can play with you!Oh Mr. Sun, Sun.Mr. Golden Sun.Please shine down on me! And before the song concluded Sun bounded his way over to them. Loud cheering and laughter echoed throughout the daycare. I felt a smile creep along my face. I remembered singing that song at the other childcare centers I worked for. But I had never seen it done in such a charming way. “I see Jones has set a new record yet again,” Cassandra had gotten closer to me. I began to lean against my heels to make it a more comfortable distance. “Were you the third or fourth interview of the day?” “Oh- um, I think I was the first,” I found my eyes wandering over to a decorated block. It had fish printed on it. Some of the images had worn off with use. A tail without a body and vice versa here and there. “Really?” Cassandra's voice reminded me that I should be looking at her. I quickly turned to attention. “That's very lucky for you.” Her accent had a Spanish lilt. I found it... soothing. It reminded me of growing up with all of my bilingual classmates. “That Mr. Jones loves to skip work.” “Uh, I guess so,” my laugh sounded way more forced than I thought it would. I didn't want to judge anyone too soon. Mr. Jones did hire me very quickly, but he was also very generous at the same time. Plus it sounded like he wasn't trying to leave early. This time at least. He was called in on his day off. But I have learned to just nod and not add more when someone wanted to gossip. “So you're the napper?” Cassandra adjusted her glasses. The dark eyes beneath gave off an aura of maturity and experience. I could see the beginnings of crow's feet at the corners of her eyes and a hint of smile lines that extended from the base of her nose. She may have been older, but she still had an elegant beauty to her. “Napper?” my brain took a second to process what she meant, “Oh, yes. I'm going to help with naps.” “God bless you, child,” she shook her head with a sympathetic look, “No one else wanted to deal with that Moon. It creeps me out.” “Oh, is it that bad?” If it looked anything like the statue upstairs I thought I could handle it. But I understood how she might have of seen it that way. Some people find jesters unnerving on their own. Let alone one made of metal and wires. “Yes, yes! The last napper just left... I'm not sure what we'll do today,” Miss Cassandra placed a hand on her hip. The motion made her skirt sway to the side and her long hair followed suit. The flowers on the fabric reminded me of visiting my grandparents' house. Her movements were expressive, but restrained. I found her much calmer than the other two I had met that day. If only she would not stand so close. “I'm sure it'll be okay. I-it's just a bug right?” The look on Cassandra's face told me her answer, but she said it anyway. “They hired you instead of fixing it. It's a bug here to stay,” she now had both hands on her hips but her smile was kind, “But no worries, child. It's nothing dangerous. Just scary looking. Makes it hard for children to sleep.” “O-okay,” I hadn't realized that my eyebrows were furrowed until her statement helped me relax. “I-I'm pretty good at helping kids sleep, so we're good... Once I start,” I tried again at a genuine laugh. It didn't fair much better. “So you are just visiting today? Any other plans?” she stepped forward. I smelt cinnamon and bread. It was pleasant, but I stepped back. “I'm just hanging out. I got a pass for the day so... Where do you like to go?” I was hoping that Cassandra's more quiet demeanor would also mean she would recommend somewhere to match. “The theater upstairs is nice and quiet this time of day,” her smile reminded me of my Mom's “My son likes to go there if it is too loud in the games.” “Oh, thank you. That sounds nice,” I began shuffling toward the entrance. My weight made indents in the soft flooring. I tried to ignore it. “I better get over there before Mia gets upset,” Cassandra waved and headed in the opposite direction, “See you Monday.” “Yes, see you,” I quickly waved back and slid my shoes back on. After huffing and puffing and heaving my way through the heavy doors I made my escape. If I was to survive through hanging out with Mia I would need some time to recharge. This morning was already so stimulating. I needed some quiet. There were also a number of things I had to process, mentally. First things first: I had to find that theater.
