Working at the Superstar Daycare Ch 6 Chapter 6: Welcome Wagon “Well, this isn't too bad...” I turned about in front of the mirror. My gaze analyzed the fit and color of my new uniform. “I get the Freddy one,” I continued to talk to myself. I was told that I wouldn't be able to pick which character was on my apron, but I was fine with it being Freddy. I liked that lovable bear. Mr. Jones was waiting outside the staff locker rooms to hear my approval. Mainly the size. I kept the observations short. My employer looked up from his notes when I came out, “So, how is it?” “It fits just fine,” I pointed at the top pocket with the character print, “and I like Freddy so...” “Great to hear!” Mr. Jones jotted something down, “The person before you made a fuss about it not being Roxanne. Almost quit right then. To be honest I'm surprised she lasted as long as she did.” There was an awkward pause. I had merely responded with a nervous smile. I couldn't help but think about those phone calls in the Freddy's horror games. 'Not implying that they died' echoed in my head before Mr. Jones continued. “She always complained about something or other. Said that the robots not working was the final straw.” “Oh... Well, I hope she's happier now...” I chuckled quietly. I decided not to mention any of the strange behavior I saw last week. It was only that one instance. The rest was just things I was told about, I didn't see it myself. But I would soon. Today in fact. Mr. Jones smiled, showing his white teeth, “Any other questions about your uniform? Before we move on.” “It's just the apron?” I asked. I had seen other employees walking around with full outfits. Branded hats and even the same shoes. It seemed odd to me that the daycare's uniform was only an apron. “Luckily for you!,” He chuckled playfully, “Just keep what you're wearing under it appropriate. And no brand or graphic Tees. Besides Pizzaplex associated ones, of course.” “Okay, I should be fine then,” I never really wore anything too revealing nor anything that could get me pointed out as a nerd. Those game or show related shirts were 'at home' only. “Alright, let's move on,” Mr. Jones adjusted his cap, “I have some staff assessments to do after this. Wouldn't want to keep those teens waiting.” After finishing some busy work, getting my key card, fingerprinting, and the like, I was free to go. I told him that I knew my way to the daycare thanks to my exploring. So I was free to roam in that direction by myself. As long as I got there by 11 AM. Since I was only there to help with naps and transitions, I wouldn't be needed till later in the day. I wasn't sure what the transitions were for, but Mr. Jones told me that just being there would help. I tried my best not to worry about it. Too much. That gave me half an hour to get there. Plenty of time to hype myself up. I put on my best smile and started my way up to the shops. Just to walk past them to the daycare doors. The Pizzaplex was in full swing by now. So there were quite a few people out and about. Looking at all the different toy and trinket options. Some putting their things away in a locker or getting a stroller for the smallest ones. Needless to say, it was busy. I was happy I was allowed to bring my bag with me to the daycare. Otherwise, I would have to leave my things in the staff locker room near the entrance. At least that is what Mia told me last Friday. There were teacher cubbies in the play area for easy access. With locks, I was told. That kept the children safe from anything that we might have that they should not. I didn't carry any medications in my bag so the most dangerous thing for them would be my food. And that was only if they had allergies. But the main reason I liked having my things close was to have my sketchbook with me. I enjoyed drawing while the children slept. My lips curled up thinking about last Friday. Not only did I meet a fellow dork, but I also had a great time with Mia. After that little hiccup at the beginning, anyway. I found out that Mia was an avid gamer. She beat me at every game we played. I didn't mind, though. As I often say: 'I have fun with games, but I'm not very good'. Seeing her so happy made me happy. She had this infectious joy that you couldn't stop. You just start feeling better around her. It was too bad that our shifts would only overlap for a couple of hours at most. Better than nothing, I suppose. Besides I still had to get to know my other coworkers better anyway. I weaved through people chatting and children desperately trying to get their parents to hurry along to the fun part. A few younger children were throwing a fit about not wanting to go to daycare. My face turned sympathetic. I would see fits like that at a normal childcare center. I could only imagine how hard it could be knowing that your older siblings got to go do the fun stuff. Oh, and there was also that big jester animatronic. The one that scares even the adults. Yeah, those fits were understandable. By the time I made it to the fountain, I still had some time left. I decided to enjoy the scenery with my music for a bit before taking the plunge. My eyes closed and my head went to dreamland. Not really focusing on anything in particular. Letting all the images come and go as they please. Each one only lasted as long as a breath. After a song or two, I opened my eyes. Calm and ready. I stood up, as confident as I could manage, and made my way to the Superstar Daycare. I saw a couple of parents waiting in line to check their children in. A bored looking counter worker stepped in whenever someone had trouble with using the computers. One of the parents looked at my apron and waved at me. Told their child, “Look there's one of your teachers! Doesn't she look nice?” And I waved and smiled at them before heading down the stairs. After some more weaving, I made it to those big wooden doors. After one more 'you got this' speech in my head I pulled on one of the handles. A tug or two later I used both hands, then leaned my body into it. The door swung open suddenly. I nearly fell over. “Whoopies,” I chuckled to myself. I had forgotten how heavy the doors were. I guess that made it harder for children to sneak out. I quickly scampered in before the door closed behind me. It didn't take long for my first greeting, “HELLO! Welcome back Miss Nae-nae!” Mr. Sun's voice echoed throughout the play area. I couldn't tell where he was, though. “Come along children! Let's go say hi!” I heard some children echoing similar sentiments. Their voices got louder as they made their way to me. Then around the corner came Sun, a gaggle of children following him like a batch of ducklings. Miss Mia and Cassandra took up the rear. Mia was waving excitedly, jumping up and down with a big goofy grin. Miss Cassandra, on the other hand, was more restrained but still looked delighted. I froze. I felt my shoulders reach up to my neck for emotional support. I pushed them back down and put on a smile. I didn't expect to be made a spectacle of, but I would get through it. The group surrounded me. Many tiny eyes examined me. Mine did the same to them. There were 20 or so children. Not too bad for this many teachers. To be honest I expected there to be more. This is a daycare for a pizza joint, I had to remind myself. Mondays probably weren't their busiest days. “I'm so SO happy you've joined us today!” Sun continued with theatrical flair, “Children, this is our newest teacher, Miss Nae-nae. Now say hello!” A cacophony of 'hi's and 'hello's came from the group. Some of them screamed their greeting long after everyone else had stopped. Others just waved. And a select few went up for a hug. I bent down and returned the favor. “Hello, everyone,” I smiled at them. My voice was slightly shaky but I would make it work. “I'm really excited to play with you. Today is my first day so I'm going to need your help. Okay?” Some of the taller kids raised their hands and blurted out different things all at once: “I know all the rules!” “I'll help! I'll help!” “We're going to golf today!!!” Miss Cassandra chimed in. Her voice was loud enough to get their attention yet still gentle, “Now now, children. One at a time, please.” The kids stretched their hands in the air as far as they could. A couple grunted and made humming sounds in hopes of getting picked first. My smile got wider. What good kids. I scanned and pointed at a child I thought to be the youngest one raising a hand. A girl with one ponytail at the top of her forehead. Her hair was only long enough to make it look like a palm tree growing out of her head. “What's your name?” I bowed down to be closer to eye level with her. “Avery!” her voice was small but powerful. It was adorable. “Okay Avery, what did you want to say?” I asked., “We're gonna golf!” She waved her hands in the air. She was clearly excited. How cute. Being this excited about golf. I mimicked her enthusiasm, “That sounds like fun!” Then I pointed at another friend who was waiting. “Alright what's your name and what did you want to say?” A boy wearing a Freddy shirt blurted out, “Kevin! I like Freddy!” “Oh I like Freddy, too!” I guessed he was talking about my uniform and nodded my head in agreement. I continued to go through the crowd of children. Getting names and hearing what they had to say. Now and then some would echo agreements or lack there off. Once some of them wondered off our meet and greet was over. What a cute bunch of kids, I thought. It was always so much easier to talk to children. They were simple. You didn't have to worry about what they thought. They just said it. No mysteries. Children simply express themselves. I found that endearing. And easier to deal with. Much easier than over analyzing everything about a conversation with a fellow adult. “I'm so glad you came back!” Mia could hardly contain herself. She raised her arms to offer a hug. I gave her one arm in return. “I was a bit worried that you got scared off,” she mumbled. Her breath on my ear made me twitch in discomfort. I hoped she didn't notice. “Nope,” I chuckle. It sounded nervous despite my efforts, “Can't scare me off that easily.” “Good to see you, Nae,” Cassandra moved in closer to greet me as well, “Just in time, too. Help will be wanted today.” She waved politely and kept it at that. I was grateful to see she was trying to keep me comfortable. After that little foot shuffle dance we did last week, it was appreciated. “Miss Nae-nae! I'll show you where to put your things,” Sun's jingling bells twirled around with his hands as he motioned for me to follow, “Then we can have fun!” His voice was full on elated. The projectors on his face showed stars. Mia let me go, her face looked relieved. Cassandra motioned to her and they focused their attention on the children. “Okay, Mr. Sun,” I replied, “That would be nice.” The robotic mascot of the daycare turned to guide me. I took that opportunity to take a quiet breath. All in all, I was feeling calmer than I thought I would. Or perhaps my brain wasn't allowing me to feel it just yet. That would be fine, too. Our trip wasn't very long. Just to the cabinets behind the computer desk. Slender, metallic fingers gestured to the one closest to the doors. “This one will be for you! Your key card should unlock it.” “Oh, thank you -uh...” I examined the cabinet door up and down. I couldn't find a card reader anywhere. “Sorry, but -um-” “It is proximity activated,” Sun elaborated when I gave a confused look, “The door will unlock automatically when you get closer. So it should be unlocked now.” I checked the handle and it opened with no problem, “Well now I just feel silly...” I knew that only a robot saw my ignorance, but I still felt embarrassed. “No problem Miss Nae-nae! I am here to help~” I didn't have to look at Sun's face; I could hear the smile in his voice. I put my bag away and turned to face the jovial animatronic. Looking at the happy shapes in his eyes made me smile. He wasn't so bad. Creep factor wise. Once you got used to his less than expressive face. And his size. And volume and-- Well there was a lot to get used to. But once you did that, Mr. Sun was actually a nifty thing to have around. “So uh,” I wanted to clear something up before moving on, “I'm all clocked in, right? Is there anything I need to do for that?” I had been told not to worry about checking in or out. 'The robots do it' was what Mr. Jones told me. But I wanted to be sure. “Yes ma'am!” Sun stood at attention like a cadet, “Just leave it to me!” “And if I need to check my hours I just... ask you?” There had been a huge emphasis on 'no overtime pay'. Ever. I would have to keep a close eye on that with my habit of coming in early. “Yup!” The rays surrounding Sun's head spun playfully, “Would you like me to inform you when you are approaching over time?” “Actually, yes. Thank you,” That would be one less thing to worry about. Sun's eyes went blank. After a moment they projected exclamation marks, “There! You're all set, Miss Nae-nae~ Now I must be off! Ta ta~” The bot bounded back into action. Into the air. Surprisingly high. I tensed up at the thought of someone getting hit. But his fall was so gracefully slow that I soon switched to staring in awe. How on Earth? How does this robot make everything feel so whimsical? I would truly never understand how these animatronics work. Just being around to watch them do their thing would keep me entertained for hours. Days even. No time for that now, however. I had to focus on having a good first day.
