Description
Name: Lock SmithAge: 17
Height: 5’10’’
Weight: 150 lbs
Race: "The Family." Almost human, but not quite. The Family's legends say they are descended from a God called the "Great Father," and that they used to be much more god-like generations ago. Their skin is very pale, their hair and eyes tend towards unusual colors, they do not have appendixes, and they never get sick. They require less than half the food and water regular humans need, and live for an average of 400 to 500 years. When near death for any reason, members of the Family can also go into a deep coma, suspending almost all bodily activities in order to survive for much, much longer.
The Knack: Members of the Family can perform a sort of magic they call their Knack. When concentrating, they see a visual representation of the world around them, simplified into a form they can easily understand and interact with. They use that representation to manipulate their surroundings. For example, Lock's father can see the world as a computer program, so by editing the code he sees, he can slow time, transform one object into another, etc. Consider the Knack a hallucination that allows its user to do magic. Some members of the Family have stronger abilities than others, and can make more substantial changes to the world around them. Lock’s grandmother, the Family’s Matriarch, currently possesses the most powerful Knack.
The Floating Island: Literally, an island floating in time and space. Nobody knows how it got there, but it exists in its own strange little space, not really anchored to anything else. The Family has built a city on it, and uses their Knacks to travel to other times and places from it. It contains an eclectic mixture of objects and architecture from throughout space and time.
Back-story: Lock is the grandson of the current Matriarch of the Family, and was expected to display a powerful Knack. He did, at age ten, by accidentally turned his pet cat into a giant saber tooth tiger. Two of his cousins were injured by the monster, and Lock swore he'd never use his Knack again until he could understand it properly. He has searched for information on the language he sees when using his Knack ever since, with no success. His refusal to practice with his Knack frustrated his grandmother, the Matriarch. Her frustration boiled over during the ceremony intended to recognize Lock as an adult member of the Family....
Motivation in tournament: If he becomes Nia’s apprentice, maybe she can help him master his Knack. He’s also not a big fan of gods, despite being related to one.
Abilities:
Memory: Lock remembers everything he hears or reads, word for word. Lock has been reading the Family's library since he was four. Since the Family has been amassing an extensive library for hundreds of thousands of years, with texts collected from millions of different times, worlds, and cultures, Lock knows quite a lot about a variety of subjects. He has a special interest in languages, communication, and cryptography.
Learning: Lock learns very, very fast. He quickly understands how things work, or, as he puts it, "systems."
Knack: Lock sees an enormous, complicated, technologically advanced machine, suggesting his Knack is probably quite strong. However, he doesn't know how to use the machine and all the instructions, labels, and controls are written in a language he has never seen before and suspects does not exist. He therefore refuses to use his Knack.
Fighting: …he’s read about its existence? His cousin Arrow gave him a few self-defense lessons years ago and Lock is naturally fast and agile, but basically fighting is not his forte.
Personality:
Temper: Lock generally has a very mild disposition. The Family believes in self-control and stoicism, so Lock views any display of extreme emotion as embarrassing and best avoided. Unfortunately, he can (VERY rarely) get angry. His temper is typically triggered by attacks or insults against others, not himself.
"Systems": Because of the teachings of the Family, he has trouble thinking of non-Family as actual people. To him, they are just complicated "systems" governed by set rules and without any real choice. While this means he doesn't blame them for their actions, it also means he has about as much empathy for them as he does for a clockwork toy. They can be fascinating, however.
Curious: He NEEDS to know everything, and values truth and knowledge above everything else, including his own safety. He loves puzzles.
“Puzzles”: A fight constitutes a puzzle for him. Every opponent is a system that must be understood, and every system has a weak point.
Stubborn: He is always passionate about what he believes in, and cannot be swayed by any argument, bribe, or threat. However, presented with new, empirical data ( or as he would say, “the truth” ) he will occasionally change his views.
Emotional: Despite his belief in systems and logical rules, Lock is actually much more emotional then logical. He trusts his intuition and sometimes makes decisions based on feelings he knows are illogical. He's embarrassed by this trait.
Courage: He’s a coward, unless someone he cares about is in danger or his curiosity has taken control. He was not raised to be a warrior, and has lived his entire life in the safety of the Floating Island.
Other:
He collects interesting names in a notebook, and enjoys guessing at their origins.
He's currently being stalked by a magically altered saber tooth tiger, previously kept at bay by the presence of the Family.
He’s terrified of cats, possibly because of said saber tooth tiger.
He hero-worships his older cousin Arrow, and feels responsible for Arrow’s brother Copper.
He has an eight-year-old sister called Song.
He’s not sure the Great Father actually exists. If he does exists, Lock is fairly certain he’s a jerk.

I was very vague about his backstory in this, and I'm looking forwards to actually going into it more. Mittens the giant saber tooth cat will be making an appearance later. She's a stalker. And morphically challenged.
