Description
Freckles optional.Have I mentioned that I don't like painting? Or eyes? Or painting eyes? And I'm not entirely fond of staining either.
Anyway, it's been a friggin' month of storms, floods and warning sirens, so I had Fallout: Equestria on the brain. This might be some of the worst hair I've ever made, er, I mean, I tried really hard to capture the feel of Fallout 3's character creator, that's what I meant to say of course. Also, she got all dusty and dirty while the stain was drying and I got out the buffing cloth, and then I thought, "but why, though?" Certainly not for verisimilitude. And so our lightbringer is just a little messy, as she should be. The pipbuck was a bunch of fun though, with it's tiny buttons, and even though the gray stain certainly did not set like I had hoped, I'm still having fun experimenting with color, and the blue stain is pretty close to how I had hoped.

Awesome work!
Your carvings really make me want to give wood carving more attention. I've recently been reading a bit about the different types of wood that can be used for carving and it seems that linden / basswood / lime (seems like there are plenty of words in American an British English for the wood of trees from the tilia genus ) gets a lot of praise.
What type of wood did you use for this sculpture (edit: scratch that question, I should have looked at the title as well as the image )? With two types of wood being used (maple and walnut) which part consists of which type of wood and how did you connect them (glue or are there other / additional means to make a connection so fitting that it is really not noticeable in this figure)?
Do you have any favorite types of wood for carving?

Hey, I’m really glad you like it! I think I’ve only carved a couple of things in basswood personally, but it’s a classic carving wood, or so I have been told, if you’ve have any on hand to use! On this one the mane and tail are walnut and the body is stained maple, both of which are lots of fun to work with, and the mane is glued on in several parts (I believe 5 total) while the tail has more of a peg and hole arrangement. Also, the glue seams on the back of the mane are painfully obvious on close examination, but just aren’t so blatant in these photos. :/
My go-to carving wood is walnut, but if I had to choose a favorite it would be padauk. The sawdust smells like cotton candy and it makes the whole project fun.
Have fun woodworking and let me know if you post any carvings! I very much enjoy your woodburnings!
