Ohh - I get asked this a lot. Okay firstly making the mask in a negative mould helps, because you can press the paper hard into the mould to eliminate as many lumps as possible.
Mostly the smoothness is achieved once it's gessoed, with lots of sanding. Sandpaper is your friend.
