Description

  He found Cliff sat right where he left him, with Tanager now talking rapidly in his ear. The scene gave Peacemaker pause for a fraction of a second, as he had never imagined seeing his hyperactive clawmate look so subdued. Cliff was obviously listening to what the other SkyWing was saying, but he had a deeply uncomfortable expression on his face, and his tail tip was flicking uneasily.
  As Peacemaker edged closer, Cliff looked up, his eyes brightening hopefully. Tanager, however, seemed completely oblivious to the NightWing’s presence, continuing to yammer on at an astonishing pace.
  “Like I was saying, if I could just get an audience with the queen, I’m sure she would agree that I deserve to be moved up in the ranks. I mean, all of my trainers say that I’m making excellent progress, and my father is sure I’ll make an exceptional general someday if given the chance. So, if you could just –”
  “Okay, I got it. I’ll see what I can do,” Cliff replied, looking very much like he wanted to escape from this conversation as quickly as possible. “But just so you know, I’m not planning to go visit my mother again for a few weeks.”
  “But you could write her a letter, couldn’t you?” Tanager implored him. “If it’s not too much trouble, I mean,” he quickly added, making his voice somehow even more oily than before.
  “I mean, yeah … I … I guess. Look Tanager, I really just want to hang out with Peacemaker right now, if that’s okay. This is his first day of classes. So … maybe we could talk about this later?”
  The other SkyWing’s expression suddenly faltered, just slightly and only for a brief moment, but Peacemaker saw it. The smiling, friendly mask slipped, revealing the ghost of an angry, contemptuous face beneath. Then, just as fast as it had appeared, it was gone.
  “Of course. I totally understand,” Tanager replied, smiling with all of his teeth. “Take as much time as you need.”
  Peacemaker felt the spines rise up along his back. He suddenly didn’t like this dragon at all.

Another chapter scene illustration that I drew up. Tanager is a very, very minor character with maybe two appearances in the whole book, but I feel like he does a good job acting as a proxy for all of Cliff's insecurities. I think we've all met someone like him, who will be super sweet to you if they think you can give them something they want, but will quickly turn cruel when they aren't getting their way.
