Is she still ok? Hummingbirds that come into the wildlife rehab center I volunteer at usually don't do so well *sobs*
*twitches with concern*

i took him to a rehab place. havent heard from them to know. the lady i took him to has my email and phone number so maybe ill get some news one way or the other. i doubt it will happen soon however since i live near houston and there are still people without power because of the storm there are sooooo many more animals going to shelters and rescues-i KNOW theyre all overwhelmed!
i havent found any casualties though i keep a diligent eye out! i luvz me some critters!

I hope he does ok...those storms down there just sound awful! What bothers me the
most is that people seem to only talk about Katrina, but hurricanes happen every year,
and there are always people (or animals) in need.
Crazy weather down there! Up in Washington...just rain, cold wind, and sometimes
snow...nothing much!
Love teh critters!

aww how cute...

i was once attaked by a humming bird. i still dont know why. one day i just stepped onto my porch and next thing i knew a hummingbird was in my face whacking me on the head! then it flew away! it was like a hummingbird hit-and-run! never saw it again... no one believes me though, just like they don't believe ladybugs are vicious bloodthirsty fiends!!(was once bitten by a lady bug)

i should just become an emo since even humming birds and lady bugs hate me....

your welcome! ^^ I was kidding 'bout the emo (too ADD to be emo....like Sora.....I like disney.....I want a taco...marbles come in red....)But I was attack by a kitten too and the fluffy bunny pooped in my gradfather clock, shoe, carpet, underbed... and chewed up my phone cord. Soooooo.... i'm still holdin' out on the rainbows and sparkles, but if they try anything funny too then that's IT!!

ignore me i've had too much sugar today.

I'm so very glad you're taking care of the little guy! There might be a chance of him not recovering (delicate bones and I'm betting they're healing wrong) but I hope you continue to take care of him until he's off your hands :3

yabbles In reply to toujin [2008-08-31 20:35:14 +0000 UTC]

thank you. and if it comes to it i will take care of him til the end of his days.... he has made some pretty big steps in his recovery already, but you're right on the bones. i really hope this clinic will take him. he DID start flexing the wing today. he flutters the good one a lot, but just today he started moving the injured one. he's still got a long long way to go... a slow road for a fast bird.

thank you
and really, i dont think i could live with myself if i knew he was gonna die and i did nothing to help.
around here laying on the ground too long can get you killed (terrible fire ants from hell) so leaving him there to recover on his own just wasnt an option.

today he sat on his perch twig and preened his feathers. i have great hope for him!

you're right as far as i can tell. his beak is less than an inch long and he has only two ruby feathers on his neck. a few too shy of being fully ruby-throated i would say not quite grown, but workin on it!

Although it's known that most hummingbirds don't actually have a song to begin with...(although admittedly, they do share the occasional chirp)...it's still quite amazing that you were able to have the opportunity to hold one, given it's condition. Nice to see one so still, and hope it wasn't stunned for too long, if what I read from others comments is correct, and it did indeed have a battle with a window.

it has been a real joy caring for him. even with the loss of sleep for late/early feedings

he seems to get a little better everyday

Stregian [2008-08-31 00:43:20 +0000 UTC]

I had that happen too! Luckily, the little one only beat himself/herself (who can tell) to a near unconscious state against a window when he/she was trapped n the garage. I picked it up and took it outside and was about to take it to the feeder when it flew away. -shew-

I hope your little one makes it. The fact that it is eating and seems to be functioning is a good sign. If your friend does not get the info you need, you could always take it by the vet. They may not be able to help treat the birdbut they should be a better source of information on who can help than anything you can wrack your brain to come up with.

Thank you for caring for the little one. People often overlook those small kindnesses they can do in this world. <3

where do you live when you have hummers flying around ?
have you asked for help or advice from some veterinarian or some other expert ?
hummers eat like crazy because it's the only way for them to keep energy for all that humming, so it might not be right sign of being better.
birds need right temperature, I'm not sure what it is, and stress is big deal for them because birds are naturaly frighten of everything...
I wish him/her well, and bless you for being kind to birdie.

i live in texas. about an hour north of houston - kinda "out in the sticks". i have tried to contact a few wildlife shelters in my area but have had no luck. i have read through many many websites and have had some experience with rescue birds. (the mockingbird was my fave ) a friend said she knew of a place and would get me the info so there's hope yet!
their metabolism is off the charts so that was a big concern for me. i dont want to feed him so much that he gets fat during his recovery. he tries real hard to fly... he gets a pretty decent hum going when he eats. he just does it with one wing. its as though he's trying to hover in front of the dropper. so he IS getting some exercise. plus he toddles around the box for most of the day.
as far as the stress thing? i would have thought that the injury, fall, and injury would have been enough. then he spent the remainder of the day in an air-conditioned office in a paper bowl being fed sugar water from a coffee stir. then came the 45 minute drive to our house. i truly didnt think he would make the drive. that usually stresses them out pretty hardcore.
well, he made it. and here it is nearly a week later and he's still kickin! i really hope this shelter my friend knows about will be able to help him. there's only so much i can do. i think he's got enough whatever-it-is to see this through.

i appreciate your concern for him as well if he only knew how many friends he has made!

he flew into a window and then fell 4 stories. his wing is broken. i think there may be some other damage because he doesnt walk so well, but that could be because he trips over his wing.
on the bright side he can still flap his good wing with amazing gusto and he eats like crazy!
his accident was monday. the fact that he's still alive today amazes me.
