But well, I guess there are cheaper digicams. I guess I like taking my cam out so I don't feel it's a waste, but there are times (cue F1 party) where it might be nice to have a small, less in-your-face camera around.

Would that be more worthwhile than buying a new one? I mean, cause if you buy a new one it usually comes with a whole bunch of stuff, right? Also, the warranty and stuff.

not necessarily. my colleague is a good second hand camera stuff hunter. There're actually a fair amount of pros who buy cameras just to try and when they don't like it, they sell. so it is almost first hand and you get maybe 50-100 off in price. warranty is still there, what other stuff will i need?

With DSLRs I guess it's really all up to you. You'd need a tripod, the memory card/s, at least one type of lens (I've been quite sold on my prime lens lately), drybox, camera bag and depending on circumstances a remote, extra battery and a dedicated flash. One good thing about just getting the body is that you'd be able to decide what kinda lens you might want. The zoom that came with the D80 was so-so, but I'm kinda looking at another one cause it doesn't reach the range I'd want it to.

i've got a tripod one small one big, memory cards, its pretty cheap to get it separately. lens, i don't know what i need yet, no idea about lens, i'll just use the basic kit i suppose. drybox probably not, although i want one to store my comics. camera bag yeh, dedicated flash later, zoom not now too.
i basically don't know what i want. so i'm going to try get a second hand to play with, until i know what i am looking for, i won't get a first hand.

But even at second hand, DSLRs are not cheap yes? Heh. I can recommend you a few sites to read, but ultimately it's all about how you feel. Lens-wise Nikon lenses are pretty ex "/
The default kit lens should be a zoom, though some people might only sell the body (lenses tend to retain their value), so it might help to be prepared to get a versatile but non-expensive lens.

Versatile lens XD. Zoom for the ranges you intend to shoot, preferably able to shoot in low light conditions (and by that I mean cloudy days). Body-wise I don't really think too much, more about which brand you prefer for starters. I doubt you'd get a full frame cause those are beyond expensive.
