Because in the intro there was earth, fire, water, and air benders. And also the fire benders started attacking everyone so the avatar that has mastered all the elements could stop them but when the world needs them most he disappeared but then 100 years past two kids found the last air bender named aang and he became the new Avatar so he had to learn all the rest of the elements to defeat the fire Lord
