He has yellow-gold eyes, a light tan underbelly, and dark red-brown horns and claws. He has a row of spikey scales under his jaw which gives him a somewhat prickly appearance and a row of muddy-red-colored spines along his neck, back, and tail. A thin, almost metallic-looking gold stripe separates his underbelly from the rest of his body. The scales on his shoulders, legs, and the top side of his snout and head are a slightly darker red than the rest of his scales.
He is slightly smaller than most SkyWings, but he often looks larger than average because of the way he folds his wings. He is able to fold them in a way that makes him look smaller but he never does. Overall, he is pretty thin but his tail and wings are somewhat muscular and very strong due to nearly constant exercise. His horns are shorter and duller than most SkyWings', and that's probably a good thing considering his recklessness.

Baby Dragonet > Canyon hatched to a middle-class SkyWing family living near the "capital" of the Sky kingdom in a somewhat small town with a few nobles living in it. He was the third to hatch of a clutch of five eggs. He mostly got along with his siblings, but he was bullied by other dragonets for having strangely colored scales on his tail and rear leg. This made him determined to prove he was better than them, and when the dragonets started being taught how to fly, Canyon saw his chance. He tried relentlessly to be the first to fly, and his efforts succeeded. This is most likely where his determination to prove his worth comes from.

Dragonet > Canyon learned how to swear from his mother but never realized that only certain words are swears, so he will shout complete nonsense when he's mad. His father noticed that Canyon was the first dragonet of his siblings and peer group to learn to fly. He taught him how to soar and dive and do flips, and soon Canyon was flying recklessly around the city terrorizing everyone with made-up swear words and uncontrollable excitement. He would have entered competitions but he was sent off to a smaller, more remote village where he couldn't bother any nobles. He took this as proof that other dragons didn't like him much, so he moved his antics out into the mountains where no one would notice. He didn't stop shouting nonsense swear words, though. As soon as he was old enough to make the journey, he was sent to Isle Mezzo where he couldn't teach SkyWing dragonets to swear.

Slightly before Canyon was sent to Isle Mezzo, he got into an argument with his older brother Tern. Canyon wanted Tern to come with him, but the (slightly) older dragonet had dreams of becoming a palace guard. The disagreement escalated to a fight, in which Canyon lost almost immediately because of the vast skill difference between them: Tern had been training for battle for nearly his entire life while Canyon had never imagined that he would ever fight anyone. This is the true origin of the scratch on his shoulder, but he lies about it partially because he doesn't like to admit that he lost and partially because "a really fast crash-landing in a field full of rocks and unreasonably sharp bushes" sounds cooler than "a fight with my older brother." No one else was injured.

Canyon spent his first few years on the island as the apprentice/assistant of an elderly shopkeeper. He continued to fly recklessly around the island and was temporarily banned from the school for nearly crashing into a student. That didn't stop him from soaring over the school and using its towers to practice an aerial version of slalom. He would fly quickly away when approached, but he always returned. Canyon's antics caught the attention of Merlin, who gave him an invitation partly to keep him occupied so he wouldn't run around freely bothering people and partly because he was impressed by his agility.

Canyon sometimes wears a leather satchel that he uses to carry interesting things that he finds. Occasionally, he will wear a silver armband on his right arm but this is only when he is trying to look fancy for special occasions. He has no other possessions.

He is completely incapable of swimming, he never learned how to and he most likely never will. The best he can do is flail madly and hope an attractive SeaWing appears from thin air to save him, and because of this, he usually tries to avoid flying over large areas of deep water such as the ocean. This is part of the reason why he rarely, if ever, leaves Isla Mezzo.

This is the true origin of the scratch on his shoulder, but he lies about it partially because he doesn't like to admit that he lost and partially because "a really fast crash-landing in a field full of rocks and unreasonably sharp bushes" sounds cooler than "a fight with my older brother." No one else was injured.

Canyon spent his first few years on the island as the apprentice/assistant of an elderly shopkeeper. He continued to fly recklessly around the island and was temporarily banned from the school for nearly crashing into a student. That didn't stop him from soaring over the school and using its towers to practice an aerial version of slalom. He would fly quickly away when approached, but he always returned. Canyon's antics caught the attention of Merlin, who gave him an invitation partly to keep him occupied so he wouldn't run around freely bothering people and partly because he was impressed by his agility.

Canyon sometimes wears a leather satchel that he uses to carry interesting things that he finds. Occasionally, he will wear a silver armband on his right arm but this is only when he is trying to look fancy for special occasions. He has no other possessions.

He is completely incapable of swimming, he never learned how to and he most likely never will. The best he can do is flail madly and hope an attractive SeaWing appears from thin air to save him, and because of this, he usually tries to avoid flying over large areas of deep water such as the ocean. This is part of the reason why he rarely, if ever, leaves Isla Mezzo.

"I'm Born To Run" by American Authors fits him very well, perhaps even as a voice canon?
