Ho, I use to do this all the time on an old account. I'd post a few pages of a comic, then quit, mainly because I had no idea what I actually wanted from the story, so I'd just give up.

Yeah well, if I do ever work on a comic, it won't be posted anyway until I have it 100% complete.

There's a question that I always think about when putting time and energy into creating a story for a fan comic: Do I proceed to keep the story part of the fan comic, or do I take the story, change up all the characters and various aspects of it, and make it into an original series? (it's a rhetorical question, so I don't expect an answer, but you can if you want. Just wondering if you can relate.) I wonder if a fan comic is even worth making, especially when the story from the fan comic, can make for a good original comic. Obviously a LOT of things would have to be changed, so it's remotely nothing like the series that a fan comic is being made from. I mean, there are reasons why I want to continue to work on a fan comic, but is it worth the time and effort to create a series of stories or comics that I cannot benefit off of, other than the attention, due to it being fan made? (Again, it's a rhetorical question.)

Welll, Akira Toriyama made alot of short story comics before he made Dragon Ball or DR Slump, then he combined elements from alot of the stories he wrote to make a new one.

One of these stories was "Dragon Boy":vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/d…

It's a story about a little kid who grew up in a forest and was strangely born with dragon wings...

Another one was "Tomato: Girl Detective":vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/d…

It's a story about a young girl who is an excelent detective who is also pretty sexy and uses her sexuality to seduce man and get what she wants!

Now ,if you know anything about dragon ball you know that alot of those ideas and characters are reused in alot of his stories, and alot of them are parodies of american stuff like starwars! XD

I see fan comics as a form of experimentation, if there are ideas you like that you used before in a story you can allways use them again, well that and fan art is also a good way to get some attention from fans of that stuff...

That's actually one of my reasons to continue to work on a fan comic: I'm trying to experiment and practice, before I get into the real thing. It's kind of like a stepping stone I guess. And I really don't mind reusing elements, I just don't want to reuse a very similar story.

OK then, how about the length of a fan comic? If it's going to be very long, with multiple different entries, and it might take several years to create, then would it be worth the time creating?

YugoTokusatsu In reply to AlphaFeverDreams [2017-07-04 15:59:14 +0000 UTC]

It depends on what kind of story your telling our feel like telling, I usually only plan the first chapter...

AlphaFeverDreams In reply to YugoTokusatsu [2017-07-05 00:09:11 +0000 UTC]

I usually tend to plan the entire plot first, before writing down how the story will play out. After I have everything written down, I'll just draw out all the panels. I don't come up with the story as I go along with drawing the comic. With the fan comic I had made on my previous account, I've learned that's a bad way of approaching a comic. Everything has to be planned out first. I've also learned not to just stick with one idea when making a story.

But belive it or not that's something very normal in manga, the only things that are planned out are the beggining and the ending, but the middle isn't planned...

YugoTokusatsu In reply to AlphaFeverDreams [2017-07-05 19:44:23 +0000 UTC]

I did a "Teh Steam" fan comic which is based on something done by one of my favorite DeviantART artists, the problem is that i was very clichΓ© and pretencious as hell, so I decided to abandon that Project before it got any stupider, if you want you can go check them out, they're somewhere in my gallery, I also working right now on two comics, one is a short story (problably about 2 to 3 pages long) about a real life experience I had, and another one is a sonic story, but I won't say more about it....

Well everyone does have their own way of doing things. What ever way is the easiest to make it work. Like me, for instance, I usually have a difficult time drawing things digitally, without having something to go off of. Even when I try to sketch something out digitally, sometimes it doesn't come out the way i want it to. That's why I draw it traditionally on paper first, then scan it to my computer, and I'll just trace it from my UGEE drawing tablet. Some people don't need to do it that way, but it's the easiest for me.

one of the biggest things I have problems drawing, are fight scenes. It's what I use the most references for. It's even more of a problem, when I'm trying to write a fighting sequence. At least when drawing it on paper, I have a vague idea of how the characters are positioned, and what angle the perspective is going to be at. I practically have no idea of how to make a good fighting sequence with words. It'd pretty much be very simple and boring like: "Phil swung is sword to the left, so Jack defected the blow with a swing to the right," and it'd continue on in a similar, boring fashion like that, for the next few pages.

YugoTokusatsu In reply to AlphaFeverDreams [2017-07-07 14:50:44 +0000 UTC]

I can relate, I have a very hard time drawing interesting fight scenes, when your drawing a fight scene there's generaly 2 ways you can take it:

1 follow the action like a movie would from move to moveΒ showing every moment of the fight.

or 2 show various vignettes from the fight in no partycullar order...

The second is generaly appropriate for comical fights with a lighter tone, hit by hit fight scenes are by nature more
intense do to they're sequential nature.

Here's an exemple of a fight scene done wrong (skip to 7:34 to get straight to the point):www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZX8uX…

And if you would like to know how to make a fight scene interesting you can allways watch this vΓdeo, it can give you a few hints:www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEn0x1…
