Other 3D programs

Sketchup - Here is the link for those of you too lazy to google it :I sketchup.google.com/

3DS Max - Fully functional 3D program that can be used for modeling, animation, games, etc. It comes with Mental ray, a fairly good renderer. It's not specifically designed for making buildings, so it's harder to use than Sketchup in that regard, but it has awesome free plugins like the ones listed below. It is not free, but they offer free versions to students in participating schools (usually most colleges) which means as long as you have an e-mail account registered to your school, you can download it for free. usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/…

Ghost Town - A free 3DS Max plugin that will procedurally generate cities within minutes. It is still in development so expect it to have bugs, but it still works well enough for me. www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scr…

Building Generator - Another free 3DS MAX plugin. It automatically generates buildings within seconds. These buildings are more detailed and customizable than the ones in Ghost Town, but it only generates one building at a time. Also, it does not generate interior furnishing, only the exterior. www.tysonibele.com/Main/Buildi…

Blender - 100% free fully functioning 3D program that can be used for character modeling, animation, games, etc. Best used with the plugin below www.blender.org/

Suicidator city generator - a Blender plugin that comes in both free and pro version. It has ups and downs compared to Ghost Town so it's good to check out both and use them both to best fit your needs. cgchan.com/suicidator/

City Engine - It's a crazy complicated 3D program that generates super realistic and customizable cities. However, it is also crazy expensive and will immediately crash if your computer doesn't have 16-24 gigs of RAM. Not really recommended unless you want to base your entire career on drawing cities www.esri.com/software/cityengi…

CityScape - An amazing and easy to use program that used to come free with 3DS Max but stupid stuff happened and now the program doesn't exist at all; you can't even buy it. However, if you know your google well, and knows the dark corners of the internet, you can still find a student version of it. No link because it technically doesn't exist anymore (or does it? ಠ_ಠ )

Kerkythea - A free external rendering program capable of photo-realistic results. I just found out about it and haven't used it yet but it sounds pretty cool on top of being free.

V-ray - a render plugin for 3DS Max, Sketchup, and other 3D programs. It can render realistic and non-photo-realistic images (i.e. cartoon line art), it also has cool fisheye lens and other effects. It renders directly within the 3D program so you don't have to switch to another render program to use it. It is not free ): www.vray.com/

Other Drawing programs

Paint tool SAI - Love this program. Very easy to draw with compared to Photoshop, which is better for editing than drawing. It's also very cheap. Only around $50 when I bought it www.systemax.jp/en/sai/

Corel Painter - Good for mimicing traditional materials such as oil paint and water color. Ideal for adding that extra hand painted feel to 3D images. Not free and not cheap ): www.corel.com/corel/product/in…

Photoshop - Everyone has heard of it. Like the name, it's best at editing photos (or 3D images). It's also used by many artists to paint, but I prefer SAI. www.photoshop.com/

Too poor to buy any of these?

Most of us are not rich or just too young and mom said "NO"... well, I'm NOT encouraging this, but a standard rule is: If there is a program, a free cracked version of it exists somewhere on the internet. Usually google is enough to find them, if not, try 3D forums.

Good luck!

what exactly do you need to do to load a model? i've downloaded one like 3 times, but it won't appear in sketchup. :c
i'm not sure if i'm just doing something wrong or what.

Haters gonna hate.
For the ones who want to spend less time/do not want to draw backgrounds/whatever, use it.
For those who don't like this method, then just search another.

Would use instagram filters be cheating too? :3
Technology and softwares must help us, and nope, this is not wrong.
Who in here could say that don't even need references to create stuff?
Nobody is that good to say what is and what is not art.

Great tutorial, btw :3

This is a tutorial and people are being overly judgemental.

See,there is no problem doing this. I respect it just as much as other self-taught/traditional process. But I know this artist knows how to manually do backgrounds. However long it takes doesn't matter. But As stated, when given a time frame. What would you do? Especially if you are self-producing withought aid.

I can't speak for everyone. But I do see some of the users commenting negative on this feel the same.

Basically what I'm saying is:Always at least know the basics manually.I mean in the since of studying perspectives, angles etc. You could use this for Backgrounds and then be stumped because you can't draw your character in the correct angle. This is more suited towards what people are aiming at I beleive.Your goal/direction rather:How you want to portray,How you want it to be seen, and your time frame.

Don't come here much. But I doubt you could find a similar tutorial in a heart beat.

I feel the need to just copy-and-paste 's comment in her description of another deviation about 3D backgrounds here, because of some of the comments here :/

"I noticed in some of the tutorial comments that not everyone understood why I choose to use 3D models, and asked if that's "cheating". I want to emphasize that the sole purpose of using 3D is for the sake of speed. Since Fisheye Placebo will be a fully colored panel by panel comic, it would save a lot of time to not have to draw the same background over and over again. The goal is to tell a story in a time efficient manner, not to see who can draw the best background without reference. So unless I'm lying about not using 3D when I actually am, it's not cheating, it's just a faster workflow. Nevertheless, it's still important to learn how to draw without 3D aid. I only started using the techniques mentioned in my tutorial about 1.5 months ago. Everything else before that was hand drawn. If you do not learn the old school way of drawing, you would not have the skill set you need to paint over the 3D models to make them look less stiff. 3D is not an easy way out of learning how to draw, it just speeds up the process for those who work in the comic industry. I hope that clarifies any confusion!"

That second-last sentence especially I think addresses both the "hooray, a way to draw easy backgrounds without learning proper perspective!" and "is this cheating?" comments I keep seeing here. `yuumei is not encouraging artists to avoid learning how to properly hand-draw a background, but rather showing others how she speeds up her work process when drawing backgrounds for her comics.

Just something I thought I might want to draw attention to, since I somehow doubt many of the commenters here have read that.

late, but yes. It is cheating.
Also, all the professional artists use it to cheat, too. One of my professors did concept art for Star Wars and he built his own models to then paint over Draw smart

I think it's important to add that while this is probably a helpful technique for tight deadlines, it's still very important to learn how to draw environments yourself, or at least make the 3D models yourself. It's a handy shortcut but nothing can beat something you created on your own the old-fashioned way: with study, hard work and attention to detail.

I'm worried that the most that some younger artists will take from this is "I can just grab shit from google and my art will be godly!". It doesn't work that way. Learning how to draw it yourself is the best course of action and this should serve as only a quick fix for tight deadlines. (And even then, if said deadline is school or work related it's still dishonest at best and illegal at worst)

I don't know if anyone can help me with this problem but when I downloaded sketchup it gave my computer the blue screen of death so I had to reset the system clock and delete Sketchup from computer. Whats weird is that I had the program for about 3 days and my computer was working perfectly until today. I'm going to try to download Sketchup again but if I get another Blue Screen that program is out.
If anyone reads this comment and if they have Sketchup would they mind telling me their experiences with the program and what might be the cause of the problems I'm experiencing?

catnapgood In reply to topcat-sama [2012-10-06 18:49:02 +0000 UTC]

Since Sketchup is a RAM and CPU intensive program, your computer probably isn't powerful enough to run the program. Or your graphics card needs more recent drivers installed. :3

i hope it was a help

Oh, you work off of your parent's computer? Mine put one of those silly things up on their laptop which I find ridiculous considering I repair computers in my free time as a way to earn money. ;^^ I've even told them how easily I can go in and delete the registry file containing the password but it doesn't intimidate them and I have my own computer to tinker with.

Though if you want, you can try to install a program called SIW (System Information for Windows) it is an amazing program that comes free for any legitimate copy of windows. It allows you to view any specs on the computer your little heart desires. xD I absolutely love it. There is also a tool called "Evergreen" which is very similar. But, is just a tad different. :3

I have a computer with windows 7 on it and an i5 processor so I think my computer should be powerful enough to handle most programs. It could be that I have a faulty graphics card though. I downloaded sketchup again and so far its working but I can't download huge buildings or else the program freezes. Anyways, thanks for the feedback I'll look into getting a better graphic card or perhaps installing better drivers.

`yuumei said that she has mostly been experimenting and practising with the program, and that it's a new tool she's begun using only a while ago. As well, she only uses this method for backgrounds that will appear repeatedly in her graphic novels in order to save time, and also creates the models for those backgrounds herself. They aren't simply "taken from Google," although it is true that others used in her practice are models created by others.

First of all, this is absolutely amazing!!
But... Could somebody please help me..?
I was wondering about SAI. I've found two links from you, Yuumei, so far, and both seem to be trial versions, but I'm kinda afraid to download it... Will it ask me to buy it after 31 days? I don't want to risk anything...
Also, since I don't blindly trust the internet, those two links you suggested.
Is this one [link] in Japanese? Or do you (or anybody that uses SAI) rather request this one: [link] ?
I'm sorry if this shouldn't belong here... I got desperate because I heard a lot of great things about SAI and a good blending art program would help me so much...
Thanks to the ones who are so kind to help me with this! And a huge thank you to Yuumei!
