Other 3D programs Sketchup - Here is the link for those of you too lazy to google it :I sketchup.google.com/
3DS Max - Fully functional 3D program that can be used for modeling, animation, games, etc. It comes with Mental ray, a fairly good renderer. It's not specifically designed for making buildings, so it's harder to use than Sketchup in that regard, but it has awesome free plugins like the ones listed below. It is not free, but they offer free versions to students in participating schools (usually most colleges) which means as long as you have an e-mail account registered to your school, you can download it for free. usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/…
Ghost Town - A free 3DS Max plugin that will procedurally generate cities within minutes. It is still in development so expect it to have bugs, but it still works well enough for me. www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scr…
Building Generator - Another free 3DS MAX plugin. It automatically generates buildings within seconds. These buildings are more detailed and customizable than the ones in Ghost Town, but it only generates one building at a time. Also, it does not generate interior furnishing, only the exterior. www.tysonibele.com/Main/Buildi…
Blender - 100% free fully functioning 3D program that can be used for character modeling, animation, games, etc. Best used with the plugin below www.blender.org/
Suicidator city generator - a Blender plugin that comes in both free and pro version. It has ups and downs compared to Ghost Town so it's good to check out both and use them both to best fit your needs. cgchan.com/suicidator/
City Engine - It's a crazy complicated 3D program that generates super realistic and customizable cities. However, it is also crazy expensive and will immediately crash if your computer doesn't have 16-24 gigs of RAM. Not really recommended unless you want to base your entire career on drawing cities www.esri.com/software/cityengi…
CityScape - An amazing and easy to use program that used to come free with 3DS Max but stupid stuff happened and now the program doesn't exist at all; you can't even buy it. However, if you know your google well, and knows the dark corners of the internet, you can still find a student version of it. No link because it technically doesn't exist anymore (or does it? ಠ_ಠ )
Kerkythea - A free external rendering program capable of photo-realistic results. I just found out about it and haven't used it yet but it sounds pretty cool on top of being free.
V-ray - a render plugin for 3DS Max, Sketchup, and other 3D programs. It can render realistic and non-photo-realistic images (i.e. cartoon line art), it also has cool fisheye lens and other effects. It renders directly within the 3D program so you don't have to switch to another render program to use it. It is not free ): www.vray.com/
Other Drawing programs Paint tool SAI - Love this program. Very easy to draw with compared to Photoshop, which is better for editing than drawing. It's also very cheap. Only around $50 when I bought it www.systemax.jp/en/sai/
Corel Painter - Good for mimicing traditional materials such as oil paint and water color. Ideal for adding that extra hand painted feel to 3D images. Not free and not cheap ): www.corel.com/corel/product/in…
Photoshop - Everyone has heard of it. Like the name, it's best at editing photos (or 3D images). It's also used by many artists to paint, but I prefer SAI. www.photoshop.com/
Too poor to buy any of these?
Most of us are not rich or just too young and mom said "NO"... well, I'm NOT encouraging this, but a standard rule is: If there is a program, a free cracked version of it exists somewhere on the internet. Usually google is enough to find them, if not, try 3D forums.
Good luck!

Not fucking up perspective, for one.

I believe the reason for this is to avoid having to draw the same background a thousand times. kind of like a base I think?

They do it in the concept art industry, I've done it a few times. It's actually a very quick method for getting perspective down (to be honest, if you're good enough all you'll need to do is make a few boxes to represent the buildings and you can work from those instead of having to model the whole building, because that's pretty pointless). I also sometimes use it for lighting reference.

Seeing as she does the Knite series, she'd have to draw the same scene in different angles. So making a room in a 3d program, would allow her to change the perspective of the room, instead of Yuumei redrawing everything from scratch.
So for comic artists it is a benefit and time saving method.

It's useful for a comic where you have the same background over and over again, it makes it less time consuming. For just a regular drawing, it would take more time to do this.

Congrats on the DD! I'm looking for some programs I can play with to learn that I may have to use in graphic design. This is very helpful ... guess it's time for me to break away from traditional art for a minute ^_^

Or instead of cracking you can try open source. I'm GIMP user and it can do almost everything (or everything) that Photoshop does and probably most what Paint Tool Sai does (from what I know).
I'm sorry, it just irritates me that most of the people are all in love with Photoshop and consider other programs bad. And 99.9% of them have cracked versions. I personally know ONE person who actually bought Photoshop and I know many Ps-ers. I'm not a great artist and I never really minded that until I decided to join one team but they said "No GIMP! GIMP is bad! Only Ps!". And it's not like GIMP can't do what they want. It was quite a bit ago but few months ago it happened again with another team.
I don't want to sound rude or anything You said you don't encourage cracking, so it's ok. It would just be nice if people would check out open source first and then if they wouldn't be satisfied, maybe they could look for crack.
Anyway, thanks for the tutorial, I may try it out sometime

i don't have quite the deep stance as you do but i still second the GIMP option! I adore my GIMP program and it works very nicely for everything i have ever tried to do. Granted i still don't even know all the functions of GIMP yet as i do not use it for super complicated works (my main use is fairly basic manips)but from what i have heard from others it can do pretty much anything PS can do.
16th: Wow, Having a team tell you that is ridiculous! It is a very snobby attitude in my opinon to have espeically considering PS's huge price in comparision to the free GIMP.

Yeah, some tell me I care too much but uhh... I can't HELP someone in something I love just because I don't use their super hyper program. And you think they paid for it? They ALL have cracked version (from what I know) and even can provide you a link to the download. But I said "No, thank you".
I'm sorry if I sound mad, but the admin I was (and still am sometimes) talking too is very stubborn and doesn't even want to THINK about the suggestions I make. And it would only make their work faster. Oh well...
And yeah, as I said, I'm not a great artist and I'm still learning, I know only part of GIMP's abilities and keep discovering new ones.

Erhmahgerd. I saw this in my messages a while ago (when you first uploaded it) and I quite frankly, I wasn't to interested in this at first. Partially because I thought the program wasn't free and also partially I didn't have a whole lot of time to read into it carefully (which is why I failed to notice that the program was free). But now, after seeing this again and carefully reading through your tutorial, I can say this is simply AMAZING!! And VERY doable for someone like me who shies away from complicated backgrounds (or just backgrounds in general OTL). When I have a good couple hours of downtime to sit and mess around with this, I DEFINITELY will. Thanks for all your wonderfulness, yuumei!!
