I've been posting some video tutorials to teach aspiring artists my drawing techniques, but I think it's very important to learn from my mistakes as well.
I'm 25 right now, and I've been drawing all my life. I started drawing a lot more and professionally when I was about 19-20. I drew all the time and didn't think much about it. I would draw until I'm in pain, from sitting too long, from not eating because I was in the flow and didn't want to stop. I would get terrible backΒ pains and even heart palpitations from sitting in the same position drawing for so long.
That's when the nails on my right hand started to get weird and lumpy. At first I thought it was a dietary thing, so I took vitamins, went to the doctors, exercised, changed things up but it was too late. It's been years now and 3 doctors later they couldn't fix it.
If it were just ugly nails, I wouldn't really care, but the nails are just the tip of how bad I've been treating my body. One time during a particularly hardcore drawing marathon, my right hand swelled up for a week. Nowadays I try to take it easy and take long breaks in between but the damage that has already been done can't be undone. I can only draw for so many hours in a day before I have to stop or I will get pains from my entire hand, arm, and shoulder.
Now I have a standing desk, ergonomic mouse, hand brace, and all that. I wish I had done these things sooner so I can keep drawing without restraint. I used to update my comics more frequently, but I can't realistically sustain that speed without hurting myself. (Hence I plan on doing a Patreon in the future so I can hire helpers to do some of the comic's background drawings)
In those speed paint tutorials where I paint within 1-2 hours, it may seem like I have it made, dishing out art in hours, but after those hours I have to massage my hand and arm. I can't draw for more than a few hours a day now without hurting.
When I was in college all I could think about is how to improve my skills, practice endlessly, and all that hard work has paid off in some ways but not in others. So please take care of your hands, and your general health. It seems obvious in retrospect but I never thought about it when I was younger that, hey maybe, just maybe, if you overwork and break your body, you won't be able to draw and create all you want anymore.
Take breaks, don't grip too hard, do hand exercises, do general exercises, get ergonomic mouse and a standing desk if you can (I just piled a bunch of books on my regular desk until it was tall enough) These are some of the few ways you can help your hand last in the long run

This is extremely important in all branches of artwork, especially animation (which is what I plan to go into). Our professors warn us about this, but also say to be prepared to eventually get carpal tunnel because it will happen. Taking care of your body helps prevent and minimize the damage.

There are so many people in so many working branches that should take this point into consideration.
I had a really bad grip for a time, and it caused a seemingly lasting minor swelling on my middle finger and it's nail is slightly drifting to the left.

In my case is even worse because I have ALREADY neck, arm and shoulder problems because of my physical constitution (I have a really long and weak neck and torso) so when I enter on a rampage later I get dizzy and even pass out because of neck inflammation. I have to take breaks, do exercise, take pills and sometimes visit the doctor because maybe I forced myself too much and I need diagnosis for my shoulder. And this happens not only drawing, but also studying or writing or whatever thing that makes my head look at the table and my arm working. Thanks a lot for sharing this to people, so they don't make the same mistakes as all of us and fix it while they can

I have had many of the same symptoms back and hand pain and am in college now. Last year was particularly bad when I also worked my eyes to the point of exhaustion and pain so that I couldn't even see the classroom board from the front row. And I am actually farsighted when my eyes are normal so it was a bit scary to have my vision fluctuate so much. This year I am taking short breaks more often and this seems to help with all the symptoms but I understand your frustration. even though i am being careful now my eyes seem to tire more quickly than they used to and I cant put in the hours I want because of this. Please take care of yourself you have my best wishes.

Hmm.... More and more often now, I see that the term "Everything needs balance" becomes more and more true.
So pain is generally not a good thing, if we feel it then we should stop what we're doing and chill. Most often at least...
But thanks for sharing this! I didn't know it could get that bad! I need to be more careful with my life now-- again X')
ALSO! I think problems with the back can turn hazardous at some point if one doesn't sit right. Thing to note!

Nonstop? Whoa ... how many hours exactly did you draw per day?!
I used to draw for a few hours a day, traditionally and digitally, when I was studying towards it. Now it's only about once a week or less (unless I'm completing a project).
I had no idea this could happen at all. I've only heard of carpal tunnel. My friend who drew constantly developed it in both hands. I hope your hands can somehow recover in the long run - your art is excellent, and despite the pain I can see that your hard work has paid off. But please be careful!
(Thank you for the advice - I am sure glad I've been working at a standing desk the six months ...!)

Same thing happened to me. Not as severe because my nails didn't deform, but the pain was so much that I saw a specialist and their only advice was to stop drawing. It was heart breaking, but honestly I ended up losing my motivation to draw anyway because pain isn't fun. I stopped drawing altogether for a while. Its been two years since I recognized how much drawing was hurting me and my wrist pain has lessened enough for me to draw in short bursts. It took TWO YEARS to not have weekly wrist and arms aches. I'm 25 as well.
I bought all ergonomic equipment, a wrist donut, and I have a soft brace for when the pain was bad. Nowadays, I only draw a little for work. No more hours upon hours of drawing which makes me sad because I was getting to a point where I was becoming satisfied with my level of artistic ability when I noticed the pain and my development has been stopped in its tracks.
Thank you for sharing your story. This is the dark side of being an artist that isn't talk about enough. A little prevention goes a long way and the first step of that is to educate people about what can happen.

Thank you! This is really handy to read. I actually already have put a few books books beneath my laptop, as it lessens the pressure on my neck 'n shoulders [Yeah, I've gotten to that point during which I sometimes get slight shoulder/neck aches].
Hoping I'll get a "better" set-up, though, as I'm starting to get fed up with the laptop due to the lil' annoyances I get with my shoulders and such. Anyway, it's really nice of you to share this PSA with a lot of people!

Thanks for this! I don't get really bad hand pains since I draw less than I used to so my deformed nail seems to have leveled out a bit. I'm 23. I get pains in my wrists and stuff though. Really need to get on top of the carpal tunnel and tendon stretches!

This is good to know, thanks for the info! More artists need to be aware of how delicate hands can be.
I recently just got pins out of my dominant hand due to a torn ligament in the wrist that happened sometime in the spring. I had to go through six weeks with those awful things in my hand and it not only made drawing harder/near impossible but school and other activities as well. I am not super careful and if my hand starts to hurt I take a break and try not to push it so hard.

i've had this weird dent for as long as i can remember because i've always drawn a lot and now i have a callus on the same finger (its how i hold my pencil it's always that one damn finger)
i always knew why i had the callus but never knew why i had the damn dent.. i just thought i had an infected finger and went along with my life
thank you for this journal! i will definitely be weary if i start becoming insane with drawing
the only time i really hurt my hands is doing notes for school (its like pages of constant writing for hours and i always grip hard) so i will definitely b careful

My mom suffered from carpal tunnel from a young age due to her constant work at computers and other various activities, she left it untreated for so long she eventually had to have surgery and she still suffers from pains here and there. Β The very idea of have my wrist cut into (she told my sister and I this when we were younger, terrifying!) freaked me out.
When I began working on the computer and drawing a lot she was not shy about warning me about taking care of myself and fortunately for me, she invested in a couple of art classes when I was younger where I was instructed on how to hold a pencil "properly" (to avoid sores I guess, I've never had them whereas I had college friends who suffered from them) and to "use my entire arm and not just my wrist". Β Β A handful of college professors also re-confirmed all those techniques. Β Also keeping a straight posture for as long as possible helps too (I had no choice to learn since I played violin for a few years and took great pride in looking professional).
I, like many other artists, plan on making art for a very long time, don't forget to think about yourself and to take care of your body. Β

Yeah, you have to take care of yourself, and whatever you use to do your art! I play violin, and when I was a teen I played it a LOT. To this day, my left collarbone has a slight kink in it compared to the right, from where I gripped my violin too hard with improper technique. The tips of my left fingers also have decreased sensation from pressing too hard on the strings. Thankfully, neither of these things really interfere with my life nowadays, but I'm also not playing violin as much as I used to.
Some things are unavoidable, they'll happen to anyone eventually, but if I had taken better care of myself and done things properly from the beginning (and had a teacher who actually CARED about me using correct technique), I wouldn't have done even this much to myself already.
Remember, everyone: if you're young, you can push through pain pretty easily...but pain is your body's way of saying something is WRONG. You HAVE to take breaks and treat your body well or you will 100% regret it even just 5, 10 years down the road, not to mention you may end up damaging yourself badly enough that you can't even do what you love later in life. Sad way to live out your years.

This is why people have to chill when they are doing one of their hobbies.
When people play basketball, they get broken legs and sprained ankles.
Artists get severe back pain and hand injuries.
Football players get concussions and god knows what will break on their body.
Hell even readers can strain their eyesight (especially reading in the dark) and would need glasses for the rest of their life
Just take your hobby in moderation and remember everyone has limits; so chill!

I have to watch my health as well, but not for the same exact reasons. I guess it's something that people (artists) don't think about until it's too late.
