I've been posting some video tutorials to teach aspiring artists my drawing techniques, but I think it's very important to learn from my mistakes as well.

I'm 25 right now, and I've been drawing all my life. I started drawing a lot more and professionally when I was about 19-20. I drew all the time and didn't think much about it. I would draw until I'm in pain, from sitting too long, from not eating because I was in the flow and didn't want to stop. I would get terrible backΒ pains and even heart palpitations from sitting in the same position drawing for so long.

That's when the nails on my right hand started to get weird and lumpy. At first I thought it was a dietary thing, so I took vitamins, went to the doctors, exercised, changed things up but it was too late. It's been years now and 3 doctors later they couldn't fix it.

If it were just ugly nails, I wouldn't really care, but the nails are just the tip of how bad I've been treating my body. One time during a particularly hardcore drawing marathon, my right hand swelled up for a week. Nowadays I try to take it easy and take long breaks in between but the damage that has already been done can't be undone. I can only draw for so many hours in a day before I have to stop or I will get pains from my entire hand, arm, and shoulder.

Now I have a standing desk, ergonomic mouse, hand brace, and all that. I wish I had done these things sooner so I can keep drawing without restraint. I used to update my comics more frequently, but I can't realistically sustain that speed without hurting myself. (Hence I plan on doing a Patreon in the future so I can hire helpers to do some of the comic's background drawings)

In those speed paint tutorials where I paint within 1-2 hours, it may seem like I have it made, dishing out art in hours, but after those hours I have to massage my hand and arm. I can't draw for more than a few hours a day now without hurting.

When I was in college all I could think about is how to improve my skills, practice endlessly, and all that hard work has paid off in some ways but not in others. So please take care of your hands, and your general health. It seems obvious in retrospect but I never thought about it when I was younger that, hey maybe, just maybe, if you overwork and break your body, you won't be able to draw and create all you want anymore.

Take breaks, don't grip too hard, do hand exercises, do general exercises, get ergonomic mouse and a standing desk if you can (I just piled a bunch of books on my regular desk until it was tall enough) These are some of the few ways you can help your hand last in the long run

Wow, I didn't know that could happen, thanks for sharing this! I've been drawing since I was 3, so for 11 years now I've just drew nonstop. My hand cramps up sometimes but I stretch it out and continue. Again, thank you for this, I'll be sure to be more careful.

Oh my gosh thanks so much for sharing this. I've been drawing since I was three and started drawing for at least a few hours a day a few years ago. But in the past year I've started to notice that my hand cramps after drawing too long or after taking a long test. I play the flute and sometime my hand will cramp to the point where I can't hold it and it slips out of my hand. I started to get a bit worried if I would damage my hand or wrist from all my drawing, plus the exertion from trying to stretch and hold my fingers over the flute keys. Although I never really did anything to help it. Thanks so much for telling us this. I'll be sure to rest my hand from now on. I'm sorry that this all happened to you, but we can always learn from our mistakes. <3

I had this exact same thing as you. I recently started streaming my art and would go on for 9~ hours of drawing a day, and now I have permanent tendon damage in my right arm which may never heal. I can only now draw for a few hours at most before taking long breaks, and I'm only 22. >< I'm really sorry to hear it happened to you too, I hope it can get better for you! <3

I agree with everything you said, it's very important to take care of your body, especially when your job is all about sitting at a desk and using your hand. However I don't think standing desk, at least not using them exclusively, is the answer, as many health experts have already said in countless studies(especially since the whole standing desk fad has hit the market) The body is most comfortable when sustaining a variety of poses, especially active ones. So the best option they recommend is a mixed regime of sitting and standing desk, alongside frequent breaks for stretching and walking. Using a standing desk non-stop is just as bad, in the experts' opinion, as is a sitting desk.

Of course, that's just the general advice. Every human body is different in its own way, so if you found out standing desk works best for you, after trying out all the other options, then it's best to stick with it. For me, as a tall person with back problems, the standing desk is a no-go, especially for my hips. So I use an ergonomic Ergohuman professional desk chair and take hourly 5-10 minutes breaks for stretching and walking.

Yeah, I noticed pain in my hand when I wrote too much (with pen, of course). I've been writing stories since I could write, and the finger on my dominant hand is slightly curved now. Ever since I noticed this I'm taking 30-40 min breaks per 2 hours of writing. It helps a lot.

Thank you for sharing this.

If your sight is okay anyway, it may be the symptom of some problem with your nervous system. Or just extreme exhaust. See a doc to make sure.

thank you for the warning! I have another problem with my right hand, which is that I've overexerted it and sprained my wrist during my second year of high school, so the wrist can't handle nearly as much as it should. I should do exercises to train it but I never know which exercises are good for it and I rarely have the time anyway, so it's not getting any better - at least it never got worse. But I still need a wrist brace during horse-riding class, I need one during long written exams just in case, and it's been 5 years already. Sometimes it starts hurting at random, too. This warning just alerted me that I shouldn't make it any worse by working too long on something, so thank you so much.

Yup. I've got some muscle injury in my lower back while in my service in the army (I curse those doctors even now) and the damage is probably permanent. If I sit and draw for one hour, I have to get up and walk around the house, or just plain stand for at least ten minutes, before I can go back to drawing.
Thankfully, My whole family is really into health and sports, so I try to go to walks as many times a week as I possibly can, and even when I'm down a 'drawing marathon' because I want to get things done for a convention or whatever, I still pay attention to my body, eat healthy and do walks.
I think the worst of what I see from other artists, is forgetting to eat, or drink. We are so focused on drawing that we simply ignore ourselves. I had chronic dehydration for about two years, it means that I drank only enough for my body to still be functional- everything else that usually depends on our drinking habits didn't exist in my system, I started drinking properly only during the military, and that was because I was constantly thirsty and... well... didn't have any access to Paint Tool SAI. lol.

I think the good thing about artists is how we share our experiences - Β our mistakes as well as our success. I always knew that being an artist was no healthier than having a full-time desk job, maybe even unhealthier, but it is thanks to artists sharing their problems and mistakes that I now understand completely what happens if I don't treat my body right, so even though I am still in high school I try out the hand exercises and try to periodically get rests from my computer and have a lie down, do eye exercises and stretching exercises, whether I be drawing, writing or even taking notes in school >.< thats actually way worse than the computer, I actually started having slight hand and back pains in school because of so many notes and the heavy backpack ;w;

I have wanted to be a professional artist since I knew it was possible for me to be one, with at least a small guarantee of the ability to make a living (which is more than a year and a half now) and thank you for helping making sure we know how to make it healthier ^3^

Try consulting physiotherapist for your overall hand/arm pain. It sounds like poor blood circulation (swelling) and pressured nerve (pain). I'm in allied health field (dietetics), many wonderful things I think everyone should know about physiotherapy -our colleagues. Find those are properly trained and certified though.

I hear ya! I've learned the hard way too! I get awful wrist pains when I really binge draw, and sometimes just the cold weather makes it worse. Not just that, but I think my bad posture (I don't have a desk so I sit on the bed and slouch over my laptop and/or tablet when I work for school or art) has also done serious damage to not just my back and neck but also a nerve connecting from my neck to my arm.Β
Not just that, but because I'm so immobile for hours on end doing school work and then art, I've suffered internal problems with digestion and such. I get sick often because the bad position messes with my stomach, and it's just completely made life Hell for me.Β

Artists really suffer for their work. So thank you for bringing this all up. We need to take care of our bodies. We only get one in our lifetime, after all.Β

I'm not entirely sure about the nail part, but I do get constant cramps in my hands when I draw, leaving me to take long breaks from drawing so my hand can rest. I tend to, loosely, shake my hands to help when I do long period drawings. I let my wrists go limp and shake them about to help loosen them up a bit. It eases the pain for a short time. My constant writing/typing and gaming is, also, a contributing factor to some of my health issues. Such as lack of sleep and nutrition. So parts of this can be put into play for other hobbies, as well. It's good advice, taking breaks and everything.
