Description
What is it about Rowena and Dragons, I wonder? This picture was inspired by old Chinese hanging scrolls, and a few contemporary chinese artists as well. Most hanging scrolls are portraits of vast mountain scenery, but some are of dragons and some of Chinese beauties. This one of mine kind of combines the latter two, and (as usual) features my characters. I tried to throw in some scenery, but it just didn't happen. In fact, this picture is actually many months old, as has been the case in the past. However, just a few months ago I completed the drawing and coloring aspects of it, but the backgrounds I made for it all fell flat. That brings us to this week, where I got to learn even more about hanging scrolls from my Art History of Asia college class. With renewed ferver, I set out to make the best background I could; landscape be damned!
Surprisingly, that poem at the top of the page is of my own creation (with a little help from babelfish), and I even wrote out the Chinese characters myself. It's in the form of a haiku, even though I know that's Japanese. Japanese painters often wrote haiku on their works, so why couldn't I. Plus, I don't know any proper Chinese poetry forms. In English it goes as follows, but in Chinese, I have no idea:
Bright red haired woman
Unleashes her true spirit
The dragon within
The chop (stamp) at the bottom of the page actually belongs my father, Steven Broe. I borrowed it from him, scanned a few examples into the computer, and put it into this picture. People who own such works usually put their chop on it to show that they care for it, and it's not considered to be any form of defacement in China. Often times you'll see ten to twenty diffrent chops besides the artists on a given scroll. I need to get my own some day, but for now I'll have to do with the crappy "JRB" one I whipped up for the first Kabuki Monogatari picture.
As with my last few pictures, the colors you see here are slighty different than how I originally made them, but it's closer to my intent. It's not nearly as bright as the Sister Isabella, but I'll still upload the normal colors version for anyone who's curious.

She looks familiar, like one of your previous drawings. Very beautiful, and the clothing (or lack thereof) is well designed. Fire for the win! Oh, and just because... Red in the head, good in bed. :ucks.::

I got the ducks aspect alright.
Rowena is one of my older characters, you must realize. Go back through my gallery, you'll see her quite a bit. I've drawn her in that dragon getup at least 3 times already.
She used to be Ryoko, remember?
