It can’t be Chara because Chara only haunts Frisk after they do the genocide run, since Frisk has to awaken Chara by killing all the monsters, so it must’ve been Gaster. If you remember his goopy version has him smiling, and Handplates started out as a theory as to why the bros cover their hands. So this follows the main storyline, it just takes place before it in a way. Or Zarla could just stray from the storyline and Gaster will appear at some point and do something to help the bros, like appear in the Sans battle and help defeat Frisk.
