Looking at them side by side - I think the new piece is a step in the right direction!
Adding uneven vertical shading would help, but also may distract from the alien creepy things.

Woa! for what it may have lost is subtlety it has made up for in impact!
I have just had a cool idea - go 50%-50% between your last piece and this piece, but apply non linear colouring across the length of the _things_ to make them move in and out of the screen, not just left and right, this must be very subtle though, else it will spoil the mood.
