"I'm sorry, did I wake you?"
"*yawns* It's fine." She wore an audible smile. "I've slept enough during the day."
"That's good..."
"It's ball night, shouldn't you be busy?"
The music was only coming from a distance. Out here it was quiet, cold, very much so. Nobody would come out here for more than a few minutes at most if at all. Riley could watch his breath form little clouds with every word he spoke. Lia's end was quiet too as they both paused.
"I hate it." He finally said. "I thought maybe if I could hear your voice it wouldn't be so bad anymore but it's worse."
"Krisztián..."
"If only I had taken you out dancing sooner, it's what you were wishing for, wasn't it?"
"No more what-ifs, isn't that what you told me earlier? Besides, don't make me remind you how much you would've hated that." She sighed softly. "I'm sorry, maybe I shouldn't have made you go. I just... didn't want you to get in the habit of holing yourself up, you know? We both know what happens then-"
"This isn't about me, Lia. It's about y-"
"No it's not. It's about us. Listen... I know how difficult this is for you but it's important that we have this time so you can become stronger. You will need to be. I'm not saying it was bad that you relied on me or Zazu but... times are changing, I suppose."
"I'm sorry I dragged you into all of this-"
"Krisztián." He paused to let her speak. "You can't start blaming yourself for this. Especially not tonight." She sighed again. She sounded tired but it wasn't the kind of tired from a lack of sleep. Rather... utmost exhaustion. "I'll stay on the phone with you. I can't have you start going down that rabbit hole now can I?" She tried to sound more lighthearted.
Somehow it worked, because Riley wanted to protest, tell her to rest but he simply paused once again. "Thank you", he said in the most heartfelt way he could.
A slight smile was able to be heard again. "Now go somewhere inside, silly, I'm getting cold just imagining you standing out there!" Of course she knew.
