Description
VR interface connecting...As your VR assistant I might remind you for your safety where your body is in reality. You are in the Proxima b star system, on Ceres, humanity's second ever successful planet in world habitation. The 1st ever success in this endeavor is quarantined, due to an outbreak of an unclassified disease that seems to spread faster than is physically possible. We have shielded the planet from any communication and stopped all travel to and from there by sealing the planet in a singularity pocket. Essentially it no longer exists in our universe.
Through VR you will make contact with the locals who have no yet been affected. This is the safest way of investigating the nature of this planet's...transformation. In a way you are giving humanity hope-- hope that this world of hundreds of millions will not be lost forever, and that we do not need to lose our humanity in the process...
Please be advised that you may witness disturbing phenomenon. We do not know the origins, only that recent excavations on the planet's ruins may have released the disease. You will have the ability to enter the minds of people with whom you gain contact through the VR transmission; this will be essential to finding out exactly where the outbreak occurred and gathering data on it's nature. Exploring this situation through VR will keep you, and the rest of humanity safe. Please stand by for upload.

There is a handful. two men and two women. their clothes are tattered and there seems to be a strange glow about them. One of them has a strange case of tentacles-coming-out-of-his-mouth. The others stop, "hey, you from the south camp? We're being attacked up north" says the woman. the other speaks up, "these two men are just drones. we figured out how to control them before they get violent" her eyes were glowing purple.

"Hey, I asked you a question!" said the girl as you kept walking by. She just stared as you walked by.

Huh? Oh, sorry, I'm kinda on a mission right now. What were you asking?

"Are you from the south camp?" she looked at you, somehow suspiciously. "You don't look right" she said, a strange spiky texture freckling her shoulders .

Uh... well, it's a long story. Listen, can you tell me what's going on here? I'd heard there's some kind of contagion going on. Can you tell me where it might have originated?

The other woman simply watched while the first woman spoke, the men on their psychic leashes, shambling in place, "At this point it's already spread over the whole globe...we don't know where it came from."

"six months ago...or was it a year?" she looked over at the other who only nodded. You notice that the other doesn't have a tongue. when she opens her mouth, there just seems to be something unpleasant tucked away in there. But she didn't keep it open for long, seemingly embarrassed by it.

"I'm not sure...it seems to spread in your dreams... well it did for my village anyway. for others it spread in the water? not sure"

"not that I know of..." she said, "we're just trying to live from moment to moment. the bubbles need to grow if we're to stop this thing. if we can control our powers we can keep the abomination at bay!" she started yelling near the end. as if it were part of a speech they heard often. the other nodded fiercely.

As you walk forward you notice a few more people, but some of them can not be called people since they are mutated to the point of having legs where their arms were or having eyes all over their body, or having tentacles where their jaw used to be. Many lack normal looking eyes and mostly there is a purple haze about the place. When you get to an area where the haze is parting, you know at last that you are there. A large farmhouse sits on a hill and there appears to be a sphere of light around it.

Once inside, a guard steps out. He's wearing working clothes and carrying a long spring-loaded cross-bow like weapon that throws spears. "You're the projection? come in quick!" he said.

*I nod and come in* I'm here to investigate the contagion, and possibly come up with a cure for it.

He didn't respond at all, just looked at you and waved for the middle of the staircase. The hallways looked collapsed or boarded off, but at the middle landing of the large staircase there was a little station set up with two men meditating, presumably holding up the barrier, and another one with a huge white afro looking at you. "welcome" he said in a deep voice. "I'm the chief astro archeologist on site here. I remember quite a lot, and I hope my memory serves you well" he said simply.

"You are equipped to enter my memory, since you are only a projection. shall we proceed?" he looked impatient. "Because you'll be in my mind, time will be saved. I can show you a whole day in my mind within a few minutes in the real world."

You find that just deciding to do it is all that there's to it. You walk forward and he gets closer and closer and closer and he seems to be a giant now and he never seems to arrive, just getting larger until you enter a dark crevass in the folds of his clothing as if it were a cave. Suddenly you notice a light come on and he looks at you, he's sitting at a table, "okay, this is like time travel for me. for you it's just like going to a totally different planet because that's how different it was. Keep in mind that you can keep hopping into people's memory to find the source of the contagion. Also, not everyone is as willing as I am. I'm the gatekeeper for myself, and I'm freely letting you in, but if you were invading me uninvited, we might have a confrontation here, understand?"

He nods and ushers you through the dark to go past him.

You come into a deep dark forest, the ground totally covered in leaves. He walks in front for a while then comes back to you, "this planet was totally untamed when humans first arrived. We terraformed it remotely, with drones, of course, over hundreds of years. It's a harsh environement, so people are just pioneers here." He walked for a while until you came to a village with smoke and horses and wagons. There was a 3d printer in the middle of town and a solar collector for electricity, but for the most part it looks like they don't or can't use electricity yet. "this was just a year ago. The mountains where we were excavating are under our feet."

He takes you into the village. "You can look around anywhere here. The excavation is up the hill. if you have any questions, just call me" he hands you a white ball and flickers. He seems to be standing there as long as you are touching the ball.

*I hold onto the ball* Alright. *I start walking to the excavation*

As you walk, people around you look at you. they have clothing made from fibers grown on this planet. "We weren't sure if this ruin was made from a crash site or an old temple when we first started, but we were pretty sure at this point that it was a crash of some kind." You arrive at the excavation site. there are workers pulling away dirt and there's one place in particular that looks finished. As you enter, you can see that there are carvings on the walls and the material looks like it's made of obsidian or some kind of black stone. in the middle of the room is a hole. there's a worker doing rubbings on the carvings around the hole. "hello" he says.

He looked up at you and shook his head, "can people normally not see you?"

He smiled, "well, we're not quite sure, but we brought a drone out of that hole a few days ago with artifacts that had been stored at the very bottom in some sort of liquid. The purpose isn't known yet" he said smiling.

He moved over, "sure, this craft hasn't been carbon dated yet so we have no idea how old it is...but judging from the dust built up in here it could be hundreds of years old..."

As you go down, you notice that the sides are slippery and it's very hard to get down without sliding a little. It will be very hard, if not impossible to get back up. you still can stop and go back up before it gets to that point.

*I keep going. If anything gets dicey, I can just pull myself out of the guy's memories*

(oh crap...I didn't explain that very well.. you are still 'mortal' while you are in memories. to exit his memory you have to go back in the woods where you came out.)

You slip further down and you see a little cushion that was left when the drone was sent down. apparently the cushion was shot down first. You notice that the floor is totally wet and sticky. your head feels woozy after you stand up in here. It's a chamber large enough to fit a couple elephants maybe (I mean, why not use elephants to measure size?)

Huh. This place is weird... Lets see what kinds of samples i can get.
((I'm clothed, right? If so, itd make sense for me to have sample bags or something... Though, I guess it wouldn't make much sense since this is a hologram...))

(You can take samples. since you are interacting with things physically, you are kind of like a computer process going through memories. if something doesn't make it when you go back out, it's because the person's brain couldn't handle the processing power needed to make the projection. You basically can pull things out of memory and bring it with you. That is, except for anywhere outside of the VR, which would be the next chapter.)
You are wearing a skin-tight VR suit which makes you look like a sci-fi dude compared to people here. But you have several pouches on your belt.

You see there are bottles everywhere and one of them looks broken, tipped over in the sticky stuff. They are about two feet tall and fairly sturdy, and smooth/shiny.

*I try to collect some of the sticky stuff with anything in my belt*

You find a little vial. As you collect it you can see that it seems to move strangely. For example, if you put just a little in the vial, then more of it will flow up into the tube to fill it until it is overfilled. Very strange.
