Actually, I think the philosopher did it by measuring the angle of shadows at noon in two different towns, then using the difference of angle and the distance between the towns to figure it out... *Googles* ... Oh, right, this "Eratosthenes" guy figured out.Β Though apparently that was just for measuring the circumference of the Earth--as the article mentions, "most Greeks accepted that the world was round by 500 B.C."

And even with the stars, using the earth's rotation to travel is still travelling. and that just gives you rotational speed
