Description This is my first large modelling project for Maya 7, roughly following a tutorial which was designed for SoftImage XSI, so there was quite a lot of extra learning (and fun) on the way.

Many thanks to the guys at SimplyMaya.com for their support and to Enik for posting up the XSI tutorial.

Rendered using GI Joe.
Referenced using material from the WipEout franchise.

I know the name sounds cool but you clearly have no idea what a RamJet is or you would've said the propulsion was provided by some other means. Because you've chosen a RamJet I can tell you that a more suitable engine of similar technology would be a TurboJet.

A RamJet has no moving parts such as an intake fan. Thus, it cannot sustain itself by forcing air into the compression chamber without the unit moving at enough speed. A TurboJet/Turbofan engine works by drawing in air via a turbine at the mouth or intake of the unit. The air is then pushed into a smaller area where the air becomes compressed. Fuel is then mixed into the compressed air and ignited producing thrust.
Basically a RamJet wont work unless it is going fast enough to begin with.

I hope I don't offend you too badly but I really don't like it when people start talking about things they don't understand.

Ah, I feel honoured to have someone asking me for advice I've never used Poser before, but as far as 3D apps go, they can all basically do the same stuff, so fire away and I'll try and do my best Oh and if you want to learn Maya at some time I'd be happy to give some pointers

Sorry for the uber long time to reply!
I'd give simplymaya.com a try, or highend3d.com. On highend, try the screwdriver tutorial. There are a few good free tutorials on simplymaya. If you really want to learn the program inside-out, try Learning Maya (search on amazon) and start with foundation.
Sorry again for the late reply, if you have any more questions feel free to ask!

Heh, the feisar, I had chosen it as my first big 3D project too! But I ended up doing something else D:

always been sad to never have modeled a wipeout ship =/

Very nice work.

It's nice to use. You can get a free edition from the Autodesk website. There are loads of tutorials on the internet, just a case of searching for them; but if you were going to learn it, I'd recommend Autodesk's official 'Learning Maya' books and start with Foundation - it's really good

Cool... I didn't realize it was freeware. My son will be really interested in using it as well.

It's not typically freeware, but you can get a free Personal Leaning Edition form the Autodesk site. It's basically the same as the commercial package except that there is a watermark when you render a scene. I hope you two enjoy it

I'm thinking about possibly doing a short movie once I know enough, but for now this was just to test my modelling skills. I might do a still with it in an environment, but I want to get this textured first so it'll be a while. Keep an eye out and you might see something

If I leave my eye out too long it dries out and gets itchy but I will look for the new version.
