Description
I wanted to post this for the Day of the Dead but, since I spent the whole day visiting graveyards and lots of late relatives I completely ignored existed, I didn't make it in timeAnyways! What's better than my old Sorceress character, some mummy and weird rituals for this day? ^^ The drawing was made in record time, less than 10 hours, so some things are off here and there.
Also I'm trying to learn how to use my new scanner, so far the only issue I have is that the colors look "colder" than the original but with some digital change they become acceptably close to the real work. On the other hand I don't have any problem about screwing the perspective by taking pictures with a slightly wrong angle....

Looks like it could be a comic page or cover. Stylized fantasy scene here.

Thank you! Indeed, they are a mix of Amazonian natives and Central African people.

why did you mix those cultures, is it because they are both primitive and still around .... largely being unrelated , i usually mix the amazon basin kayapo with the Akha from Thailand as they are more ethnically and culturally similer. is it zoological, between central Africa and south America the cat species are related, the cheetah came from the Americas before the continents separated.

E ci credo! XD

Honestly, the skinny bodies and fully skinless skulls are what make this even more macabre. Full skeletons just aren't as reliable for giving trespassers the creeps...

That's true, in most games all the zombies-skeletons are only humans. ^^ These ones are not undead but plain dead though

Wow. That's a long time stiill. I'll try to make this question make sense; how long does each 'stage' take? You know, sketch, lineart, colors. And do you count thumbnail sketches as part of the time?

0laffson In reply to SkyFire33 [2015-11-07 12:26:04 +0000 UTC]
Ehh.. Honestly I don't know, I never checked the time of that. It depends though, if there are lots of details the sketching and inking may last more than the coloring, while if I have some particular color effect, like a night scene, the coloring might take ages.

It takes quite a lot of time, I have to use the normal "daylight" tones, keeping them lighter and then work with new layers of blue and black over them Glad you like them!

Thanks! I'll remember that. I think it's the same method with colored pencils. Not too sure. I'll have to experiment network a bit.

Well, that lady certainly got some nice company. It's actually a good amount of macabre with the mummies having taken the flesh off their skulls. Interestingly enough in prehistoric cultures people were in some cases (meaning if not buried completely or burned and put into urns) decapitated and the skulls were defleshed.

0laffson In reply to AudeS [2015-11-07 12:28:53 +0000 UTC]
Yup, that's the way they preserve the corpses of important people, the body is mummified while the skull is exposed and painted with religious symbols (I have to work on the true meaning though)

A very interesting mix of cultures here:
Oriental-style writing characters on the skulls,
Egyptian-style necklaces,
Prehistoric shamanic bone totems,
and a weapon almost identical to a Dacian falx.
(Then again, I'm not the most well-versed on cultures outside of generic modern American, so I may be completely wrong.)

0laffson In reply to Allard-Liao [2015-11-07 13:04:32 +0000 UTC]
Yup, I like to mess with different cultures. ^^ The writing was quite made up, I didn't mean to make it look oriental even if it does, and about the weapon it was actually inspired by a central African sword, I don't remember it's name unfortunately ^^

Amazing work! I cannot see at all where the work would be 'off' at all Damn, I like this character and that mysterious smirk! Also I like the way her body paint stands our from the general color scheme of the picture.
I can't but admire time and time again how carefully you manage to color with water colors ... even when you make a work in a very short time frame, and you often manage to mix it also with colored pencils, not sure if you have done so in this one.. most of the time you mix the two so well you cannot tell the mediums apart at all! ...the white areas are kept perfectly clean (with their own light shading) and the outlines of characters are nicely sharp and clean as well.

Aw, thank you once more I love the way you color too, pencils are not my forte while your works are gorgeous!
And no, this time I didn't use the pencils ^^ I had little time to complete it so I cut out a lot of details.

Anywa, very cool graphics again, and this time for me this is a kind of "Memento Mori ", but in Anthro version XD - Really great game of gray and Brown i and red tattooes, great are the incense in the background, the smoke of incense - brilliant effect effect; but I wonder just why mummies may not faces :C
XD
(I'm disappointed :C XD)
And That's just good graphics on this particular time the feast of the dead/Zaduszki day and this one time of the year...
Memento Mori...

I remember you mentioned you didn't like old corpses Don't worry about that though..
Mummies don't have the faces because that's part of their ritual, the skull has to remain exposed. ^^

I really like the feline characters that you have and I was waiting to you to do something about this one. I also have to say that the mummies look really tetric, especially because their skulls are completely skinless but the rest of their bodies look as they were conserved someway...
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
0laffson In reply to ankanyam [2015-11-07 12:15:34 +0000 UTC]
Thank you! Yup, that's their way to dispose of the corpses of the most respected people (not necessarily warriors). The body is mummified while the skull remains exposed, with symbols that should link them to the spirit world or something like that (in my fantasy world there are not "real" gods, so this is just a religious belief without any proof it really works that way)

ankanyam In reply to 0laffson [2015-11-09 10:33:48 +0000 UTC]
That's pretty interesting... I also think that creating a world without "real" gods gives that world more possibilities and a mysterious side...

Indeed, I was planning a drawing like this for a very long time!
I usually work on the image in GIMP to adjust the coloring and stuff. Everything look clearer than when I used the camera but still pretty good.
