Description Skin is fascinating, this is not a skin tones tutorial but more of a skin optics kinda thing. Btw I never went to art school or whatever, so erm, this is not the absolute word on the topic, just a collection of thoughts.

For info about what brushes I use check out the Blending Tutorial:[link]

I'm using Photoshop CS2 and Wacom Intuos 2 for this.

Edit: apologies to those of you who are freaked out by the little skin balls, hahahahaha, sorry really

They are little bitt freaky, but your tutorial is AMAZING because of your incredible skills and good explanations. I think my weakest point is painting the skin(everything looks so dead T_T), so i hope i get better with this.T_T<3

Of the skin tutorials I've looked at, and trust me, I've looked at quite a few, since I've never attempted a realistic portrait until now, this one explained the shading and how exactly the skin reflects light and how I can accompany that in my painting much better than any other tutorial I've seen.

When I'm finished with my portrait, I will make sure to link to this tutorial. Thanks so much!

Wow this is really good. I quite like the flesh balls, they add to the dimension of the object

(it's interesting to note that dark skin tends to saturate the most in the midtones, vs near the highlights; just thought I'd mention that tip)

I was just doing some exploration on the subjects of blending and skin tones, and was lucky enough to trip over your tutorial. This is fantastic, you really cover all aspects, unlike a lot of tutorials, which neglect things like light, reflections, and the depth skin can have. Thank you.

Great tips! The bits about mid tones being more saturated and the note about SSS were especially helpful. Thank you!

Wow, how informative! Thank you!

I've long been in doubt over how to color shadows on skin. I always just made the shadows a darker version of the lighted skin color. I'm glad I know about the difference in saturation now. The extras, like the scars and the stitches, are also interesting. I love how you added yellow and green to one of the bruises. I remember getting a bruise like that once... *shudder*
