I really like it, the only thing you might want to address is that the cats can still kill you after they're down.

Making your way all the way to the end of the level, just to be forced to kill yourself and find yourself back at the end....

Good test game though! Not any real bugs that I noticed. The only thing I noticed and that bugged me is that you can bounce on the enemies multiple times before they disappear, which kinda messes up the flow of the game if it happens (at least to me). Keep up the good work ^^

That can be a little disconcerting, but on the plus side if you angle it right the enemy will be shifted left/right, sometimes dramatical, giving an effect like she is kicking them away. I haven't yet timed it right to see if it can be used to knock enemies off ledges, but it would be so cool if that worked.

Could do with a little more variation for the enemies (e.g. making different cats have different animations and do different things)
Dead cats can still kill you, only way I died besides the hole at the end

Overall though, the animation looks A LOT better than for something I would have expected on something like this, and this game looks like the finished product will be gorgeous to look at. I'm looking forward to seeing newer versions come out

The game is fun and definitely playable, so I was surprised when the FPS only stayed between 11 and 14.
Good work so far!

Looks pretty good. My main concern that I noticed was a lack of acceleration: Daring Do appears to go from 0 to top speed in no time, and as a result has an understandably low top speed to allow for fine control. It would feel a lot more natural, and probably be more fun, if Daring took a second or two to accelerate to top speed, which should be... I believe about twice as fast as her current movement. That way, like in most games, the player could take small steps where precision is needed, and go full out when they're looking to race on by.

60 FPS
Dead cats kill you.
Ability to control the height of your jump would be nice.
Difficulty was fine. I was able to run through the first time without dieing once until I (willingly) ran down the hole at the end.

Finale assessment: This game is really fantastic and quite enjoyable! The art and music is superb. The Daring Do sprite especially is very nice. If I had one problem with the visuals of the game (that I only noticed the second time playing) it would simply be the fact that Daring Do's left facing and right facing sprite are the same (meaning the bandage on her wing appears to be on both wings rather than just the one) Also, if you want me to get really fussy, I could also mention the lack of idle animation and sound effect for stomping on cats. However, I'm sure you're fully aware of all this already and don't need me to point it out.

I look forward to seeing more!

Stays at about 60fps for me.

In regards to everything else: the graphics look pretty good, and the animation is nice and smooth. 2 things did come to mind while I played, though, for future reference:

1) Hitting an enemy from the side after squashing them still killed me. :[
2) Having an adjustable jump would be nice rather than jumping all the way up whether I tap or hold the Up key.

In all, though, this looks quite promising. Keep up the good work!

61 FPS. I died a lot from hitting the already dead corpses of the various cats. A death animation for Daring would be a nice touch too, nothing gross maybe just like her collapsing or something simple instead of her just flipping around and fading out. Nice work!

WeegAThon [2012-02-23 22:34:21 +0000 UTC]

If you jump, hit a wall and continue to hold down the direction that you're moving in, Daring Do starts into her running animation and you can jump against the wall indefinitely.

The corners are bouncy and you if you run into them you do a small hop. If you time it right you can jump higher by falling off a corner, then hitting the same corner and jump, you get a jump about 1.5x higher.

Other than that this game runs like a dream and looks it too! Keep up the good work.

Ooh, that wall jumping is neat, and it does seem to be related to what I've been investigating. Though I can't seem to get it to work with every wall and some walls only seem to work from one direction. Could just be a timing issue on my part though.

The only true problem with the game is the lack of health and 1-hit K.Os. I realize this is a demo and not the full release, but it's just a pet peeve when you're halfway through only to die on the second (Maybe third) tiger.

Landed on a cat, I bounced off and landed in front of it and it killed me during it's death animation.

Ran into the following issues:

Every once in a while, the controls would freeze on whatever I last told it to do, like keep going forward even though I wasn't pressing the -> button any more. I also noticed that if you ran into an enemy you'd jumped on while it was fading out, you'd still die.

Dunno if that helps, but hey.

Tharag In reply to ??? [2012-02-23 21:55:09 +0000 UTC]

Not sure what just happened, but I just encountered an odd glitch. While jumping past a set of ascending steps I somehow performed a SUPER double jump, the second jump caring me much higher than an ordinary jump, so much so I wasn't sure that I'd ever come back down. It took a few seconds, but did finally fall back into the screen.

So far I haven't been able to reproduce the error, but my working theory is that it relates to jumping again just before landing on the slippery portion of a platform edge.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Tharag In reply to Tharag [2012-02-23 22:04:53 +0000 UTC]

Still haven't reproduced double jump, but did confirm that landing on the corn of a ledge causes the player to bounce slightly. If performed with perfect timing can be used to reach the corner of the next ledge in a step series creating a sort of skipping motion.

Still not sure if this relates to the glitch I had, but will continue investigating.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Tharag In reply to Tharag [2012-02-23 22:18:49 +0000 UTC]

Still no luck on the double jump, but have now confirmed that the hopping/skipping motion can also be produced by running to the corner of a ledge and then quickly turning around just before you would fall. It can also can be produced by standing on a corner and then running back on just before you would slip off.

Further testing has also shown that jumping straight up with your back to a corner just before you would slide off than jumping again just before landing on that same ledge produces a micro jump, so now I'm uncertain if I'm even on the right track anymore.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Tharag In reply to Tharag [2012-02-23 22:29:10 +0000 UTC]

Was finally able to reproduce effect, sort of. While jumping towards ascending steps and rapidly pounding away on the jump button in hopes of jumping at exact moment of contact with corner ledge I managed a lesser super jump, reaching the top of the screen, but not exceeding it.

Getting full super jump may just be a matter of frame perfect timing or possible the result of multiple jumps some how being added together during a frame lag.

Back to testing.

Nice little game. But since you're looking for bugs....

If you run into the side of a cat you already pounced on and downed, it will still kill you.

Whoa. This thing is amazing, and I really think you should make a full version The graphics and sound are just superb ^^

There are a few minor things that you could fix, nothing too major though:

1. You could edit the jumping a bit, because whether you press Up once or hold Up, Daring Do jumps the same height. I think it should be that if you tap Up she jumps a bit and when you hold Up she jumps full height. This is just a minor nitpick of mine, but I've just gotten so used to it in video games ^^

2. The enemies can kill you even after you jump on them, if you touch their bodies that lie on the ground for a second before they vanish. This should be fixed IMO.

3. When you change direction in midair, Daring Do will still face the direction she was originally going to, unless you land on an enemy. This is again just a minor nitpick.

But yeah, those are just minor bigs and nothing to make the game bad or anything. This is one of the most impressive games I've ever seen on deviantArt, even if it's just a 1-level test
