Description
Found another map to show y'all. And it's almost completed, even! Mainly there's just a lot of city names to think up...Here we have the large city-state of Selene, one of the major industrial powers of Western An'Tetheysha. It is ringed by a series of smaller city-states that have formed a tight military-economic alliance with it. With vast mineral and crystalline deposits, extensive arable land and rich fishing waters, Selene is almost entirely self-sufficient and can afford to field one of the largest skyship fleets outside of the Zaresian Empire. The development of the Protectorates around itself is mainly attributable to repeated invasion attempts from both east and west.
Selene is also home to one of the most peculiar societal systems in An'Tetheysha. While most of the western city states tend toward oligarchies or fairly vague monarchies, and the east tends to strong centralized empires, the south coast (along with some of the northern lands) has traditionally run to something along the lines of republicanism, with some interesting variations. Selene takes these srains further into a strange territory of constitutional-monarchical-communal-socialism, with some touches of theocracy and meritocracy thrown in and plenty of required public service and public welfare. It would take a small book on the subject to fully explain the system, and I'm still ironing out bugs. (Basically I'm trying to make something approaching an ideal socialist state - it's not an easy task.)

What kind of pens do you use to draw I map like that. I want to draw I few maps and I was wondering how to go about drawing a map.

I use Rapidographs for almost all my ink work (I particularly like the Koh-I-Noor line). Fine tip pens like Microns also work well and have the benefit of being almost zero-maintenance. When I colour I use watercolours directly over the inks (waterproof ink only obviously) though now I'd probably colour digitally so I could preserve the original inks.
As for actually going about drawing a map, I'd suggest studying real-world maps and some geology for inspiration -- a good touch of knowledge of tectonic plate systems, drainage basins and probable climactic conditions due to geographic features and such goes a long way toward making a map believable. Even just making realistics coastline and river systems really enhances a fantasy map, in my mind.

Nice!!
I had a client ask me about my map-making skills... I had to pass on the gig, but if you want I might be able to put you together with an art director.
Just sayin'... you might as well get paid.

Really? That would be great! Maps are one of the few things where I actually don't lack confidence.

Can you put a few of them online somewhere that I can forward to the art director?
