Description I started this painting when I was teaching the concept art class this fall. I only did the preliminary sketch but promised that I'd complete it eventually so here it is.

There was a question about how to achieve a painterly cohesive look so I just did everything on a single layer with the default round brush.
I think when learning digital painting it can be easy to be sidetracked into tricks and techniques. Honestly none of those help you get any better at painting itself.
Technology will evolve and those methods will in time be obsolete but if one focuses on colour, composition, values and line rhythm they will have a solid foundation in whatever they might want to do. The longer I do different kinds of visual projects be it a logo, album cover or an architectural design the more I notice how the most fundamental rules are all still the same.

I have to admit (and this might make me kinda terrible) that it's kinda fun to see the faces of utter disappointment when asked what I use and I tell them that it's the default round brush. I can't help but wonder if the assumption people had when being so disappointed is, that there's some kind of a magical shortcut only I have found.

Wow, this is magnificent! But I'd guess using just a round brush makes things more slow? As you could have achieved the same or possibly a better look with a custom brush. Idk, you tell me. You're the teacher after all = P

But anyways, I'm pleasantly surprised. There's hope XD

I don't think using a custom brush is necessarily faster in all cases. Especially when you want to avoid certain kind of repetition that comes with the shape of the brush.

This might be a taste thing but I don't think a round brush draws attention to the shape of the end of the brush stroke the same way a stencil does. In my style in particular it's the the line rhythm of the brush strokes that I want to draw the eye towards.

No simple answer to this one. I think it depends on what your own style and preference is I guess. Above all else if you're having more fun with custom brushes then by all means absolutely go for it! Art is  supposed to be enjoyable after all, not an obstacle course.
