I made it!
Name: Namina
Age: 15
Trainer Class: Fisherman (She started fishing ever since she got squirtle. Fisherwoman if you prefer that for females)
Occupation: Gym Leader, Started too early because she was desperate (Started age 10 when she didn't have Marill, Surskit or her with-tackle Magikarp)
Personality: Confident, Distracted easily by rare sea pokemon (I made her obsessed with fishing)
Gender: Female, Straight
Team: Primarina, Chinchou, Marill, Surskit, Magikarp [With a weak tackle ], Blastoise (Main Pokemon, No megas)
Shinies: ''Shinies don't do anything special!''
Legendaries: ''Which pokemon would replace the legendary to balance the world? Arceus must be tired after making all this!''
Family and Relatives or whatever: Yogana (Twin sis 1), Kojona (Twin sis 2), Unnamed Mother, Unnamed father, Nomaru (Childhood School Friend), Kasai (Childhood Rival)
How she met her pokemon:
Primarina-
Ana was having a vacation Alola, who fishes all day long. She found a Brionne which was learning how to do a dance move and helped it a bit. So, Brionne decided to go with Ana, she caught Brionne and took it to her gym when she came back and trained her.
Chinchou-
When she was a kid, Ana and her squirtle was just sightseeing the view of the ocean in Johto where her grandmother lives, and she found a Chinchou. She asks her father if she could catch it because it was adorable. It was okay, so her father caught it. That's how, she didn't let it evolve.
Marill-
Recently caught while swimming in her home region Hoenn, still in training.
Surskit-
Found while trading with a bug catcher.
Magikarp-
Her first Magikarp, learned tackle and flail. Kinda strong. Unevolved. Forgets the instructions every 7 minutes.
Blastoise-
The first ever pokemon she ever got. For her 6th birthday, she was given a Squirtle to play with, but she was a bit shy with it. She got closer to it, closer... So the first ever pokemon became her strongest pokemon.
I think I made her personality a bit like Misty. Just the confident part though.

Ok can my team have a Dialga if I catch it after a struggle involving over 11 Pokemon just to weaken it to be able to be caught with a master ball

Over 11 Pokemon? You can only have 6 max on hand. Also I wouldn't recommend catching legendary Pokemon, it makes your character seem extremely sueish no matter how you acquired it. Also master balls aren't readily available on the market in universe so you need a reason as to why they would have it. Though that's just my opinion.

Uhm...Is my oc's team okay?
This is an Alolan oc okay?
Lizzie Turrall's team. Daughter of pokemon daycare owners.
Juna the Decidueye
Sora the Flygon
Teala the Espeon
Rai the Raichu
And her first pokemon and her best friend, her shiny Togekimaru. (Ace)
I can explain the shiny. Her parents run an Alolan daycare, a rival to the Paniola Ranch, and one day, her mother wanted to teach her then-8 year old daughter some responsibility. So she gave her a Togekimaru egg, telling her if she could hatch the pokemon safely, she could keep it. She slept by the egg and kept it by her side for weeks before...it finally hatched. Out came a tiny baby Togekimaru with odd coloring...a shiny...

I have 2 Pokemon OCs I'm working on and neither of them are trainers. Hopefully I can come up with something unique that people will find interesting. I don't want my characters to be boring just because they are not trainers, gym leaders, coordinators or competitive with Pokemon in any way (one of them, my Team Rocket OC, doesn't even have Pokemon).

Hello, I was wondering if this is a good trainer so far:
Name: Jorgia
Shes quick to think, however she can be quiet mysterious to others. Once you get to know her, she is quite friendly and a bit crazy ;,^)
She spends her time looking for new pokemon and protecting them from the villans that want to harm them
Her main pokemon is Adi, a shiny Zoroark she got when she was seven. Her father was a rare pokemon breeder and came home with a present for each of his children, three eggs. Jorgia chose the smallest one which turned out to be the smol little blue fox :3
She was born in Flocessy town of the unova, then once she was old enough she moved to the east of Geonsenge town.
Her team only consists of three pokemon
Adi: Zoroark
Spark: Luxio
Shady: Noibat
Still a WIP, but your guide helped alot :,3

I'm not a professional, but I'd like to say I couldn't really find anything wrong with your oc. Just remember shiny Pokemon are really rare, so maybe limit Adi to the only one.

What about a marine biologist? I have a...well I'm kinda stuck as to how I should even start. Nicole Porter: A somewhat shy yet smart girl with a loyal and naive Vaporeon as her Pokemon of choice. There's also 4 other members in her team:
Luna: Protective Gardevoir
Primrose: Elegant Roserade
Static: Short-tempered Raichu
Turbo: Brave Flygon
I want to start her off in Hoenn where she can learn about Pokemon before growing up to pursue marine biology but now...im just lost. What do YOU think? How can I go on? What should I keep in mind while I create her adventure?

I'd like to help, if that's alright
She sounds like a great character. However, eevee and eeveelutions as partners are done to death, and I might suggest using an actual starter. Perhaps you could make her a supporter of team Aqua or have her be kinda go-with-the-flow? Finally, unless she's been a trainer for a while now, I would suggest making her team a little less op, perhaps de-evolving some. These are just suggestions and you don't have to take this seriously. Hope this helps!

A wonderful tutorial!
Anyways.. I've got an OC that I need just a bit more help with the personality. I feel there isn't a enough information on her.
(My oc has become a team galactic spy, the entire back story will need some work, though)
Quiet, but can be loud when hearing anything about Team Galatic; She does think the idea is interesting that Cyrus has plans for, but rather would keep it to herself and not speak about it. Usually laid back and lazy, but does get urges to do hard-core training. Not a very good sense of justice and truth, known to lie. Has a fast working mind, but lets others figure out plans to see how well it works compared to what she has come up with.

This an awesome tutorial! I read part one and then read part two and it gave me a bunch of ideas! I have a question, do you have any way you think of names for your OCs? I can't decide on a name. She is a quiet girl who loves music and was born in viridian city, then moved to nuvema town in unova. She doesn't have a certain type, her Pokemon are mostly ones she rescued or caught. Thanks!

I must say that I really like these tutorials, they're very helpful. I was also wondering if you were still doing the third one? And also if it was okay to use your idea of a pirate theme'd gym leader with a Chatot (Chatot being more of a pet than part of the team)?

There is something that you did not fully discuss in your tutorial. What if my OC has dual personas in which the former is brazen yet compassionate and the latter being cold, shrewd, and calculating? Would I go for an Ice/Dark/Steel and fighting team?

I have a question, would it be reasonable to have a prankster ghost type trainer over the average personality I've seen ghost type trainers have, because from what I've seen in the anime most ghost Pokemon just want to mess with you, like popping out from the wall to startle you?

KeplerNova In reply to Maka00 [2014-12-17 03:44:39 +0000 UTC]
I know this is old, but that sounds like a really, really awesome idea. Ghost-types and the people who train them don't have to be gloomy, they can be silly, too! Look at Rotom and its constant mischievous smile.
I second Aonyx's suggestions, too. The idea of a Toxicroak actually reminds me of one of my OCs who used to have a Croagunk (given to her while she was a member of Team Galactic) who was quite a bit of a prankster, and she got so fed up with the darn thing that she eventually just released it. XD

Aonyx In reply to Maka00 [2012-09-30 19:07:29 +0000 UTC]
I think that would be a great idea! It sounds like a pretty solid character. In addition to Ghost-types, perhaps a prankster might have something like a Scraggy/Scrafty or a Toxicroak too! They're both kind of street punk-like, and it would give you some type coverage as well! Also consider things like Zorua/Zoroark for illusions and disguise. ouo But a team of Ghosts would be good too!

This is a really good tutorial. I think it helps to point out all the different background aspects to help people come up with more original characters. There seem to be waaay to many people just scrambling something random together they find "cool", your pointers may be a great help there :3
Two things I would disagree with, though: Why can't a tough as nails character not have a skitty except for comic relief? I think that is a bit too narrowed down- giving such a character a very cute Pokémon can be a good way to hint at his softness. Or it can be used to point out the hypocrisy of thinking that a cute Pokémon can't be tough and badass (Whitney's Miltank?!), and thus giving the character more depth.
Also, a fishing character coming from a dry region. Why not? People always seem to want things they can't hve outright... I personally feel the important thing here is how good the story is in general. Subversions of common concepts can and do make characters feel more alive sometimes
Now I spent more text on that than I wanted... Well, anyway :3 I like it, and I hope you get around to do part 3 soon!

I like me some theme trainers. In the works, I have an eccentric Grass-type specialist/aspiring botanist with weird specimens like Cradily, Victreebel, and Cacturne; and a manly faux Normal-type specialist (Well, he's as much of a Normal-type specialist as Alder is a Bug-type specialist) who uses species like Tauros, Bouffalant and Pidgeot.
I also love how a character's ideas and choices in Pokemon can be incorporated into their look. I also have a trickster that uses "evil" Pokemon like Poison-types and the Dark-types that are actually scary-looking. Because his lead Pokemon is Shiftry, I gave him messy hair that covers his eyes (although Shiftry has holes in its "hair" that show its eyes,) a relatively prominent nose (compared to the barely-existent noses of most Pokemon characters,) and a standing lock of hair that resembles one of Shiftry's hand-leaves. It's a pretty subtle nod, but I love it nonetheless. And that's only getting into his hair and face.

I also like theme trainers more. They're more fun imo. I had a "regular" trainer once, it was really difficult to decide her party. And like you said. :3 It's fun to add attributes that resemble Pokemon or the theme.

I think a problem with many trainers, like you said, is that their appearance comes first and their personality/goals/Pokemon/etc. follow. They're missing out on the fun. Ash has those thunderbolts on his cheeks for a reason.
