EDIT 5/24/12: Changed the tutorial a little! Less doodles, more text and advice. Hope it is a little clear and better to understand. Thank you all so much for all the favs and comments. I love hearing about all of your ideas! Hopefully I'll get around to fixing Part II (and III?) around one day!!A quick little tutorial I made for designing Pokemon OCs. I see some, uh, questionable ones out there.
So I figured I'd give it a go and see how the reaction is and if anyone wants a part II or III.And I'd like to say that these are general rules to follow and some guidelines to help. All rules have exceptions of course and plots and storylines really can help shape great charaters, even if they push the boundaries. Don't be afraid to experiment with more than the average trainer.
Hope it's okay and hope it gives you some ideas!

My Oc's name is Krux Vayne and he's from Orre. He has two Pokemon at the beginning of a story I'm writing during my free time:
1) Skarmory
2) Magicarp
(1) Skarmory is a Pokemon he got from his father and is his Starter/Ace Pokemon. Skarmory is female and her name is Cael, which means sky in Latin. His father is a Breeder that specifies in Flying-type Pokemon and has a Skarmory of his own.
(2): Magicarp is a Pokemon he caught by pure accident. He tripped and fell into the lake when he came to Kanto and was heading towards Pallet. The Magicarp is a male and his name is Umi, based on the Field Spell Card from Yu-Gi-Oh
Krux doesn't want to be a Breeder like his father, so he left Orre in hopes of meeting new people and Pokemon and becoming stronger. He does take on the Gym Leaders but becoming Champion isn't in his interests.

I need your help with something:
My Ace and starter Pokémon is Silvally (starts as Type:Null) and hes from the Alola Region but I don't want my OC being from Alola but from Kanto instead.
So I thought of something that was said in Sun and Moon that there's a third Type:Null but we dont see it anywhere in Sun and Moon or Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.
I thought of this little piece of lore and I want your opinion about it and maybe some tips about what I could potentially improve:
My OC is from Pallet Town in the Kanto Region living there with his mom and dad. For his 10th birthday his father was wanting to give him a very special starter Pokémon for his journey so that he would be special not having the basic choice of Charmander, Bulbasaur or Squirtle. So his dad traveled to many different region trying to find a "special Pokémon". During his travels in the Alola Region he stumbles upon a Type:Null who was trying to get his helmet thingy off. His father did not know this Pokémon while he has seen all of the known Pokémon already. He decided to make a deal with the Type:Null after befriending him too travel with his son (my OC) and together with him he would find a way of breaking the helmet thingy. So he brought the Type:Null back to Kanto and gave it to my OC.

I can explain the shiny. Her parents run an Alolan daycare, a rival to the Paniola Ranch, and one day, her mother wanted to teach her then-8 year old daughter some responsibility. So she gave her a Togekimaru egg, telling her if she could hatch the pokemon safely, she could keep it. She slept by the egg and kept it by her side for weeks before...it finally hatched. Out came a tiny baby Togekimaru with odd coloring...a shiny...

I presume that by "Togekimaru", you mean Togedemaru. Good choice, I love that little hedgehog blob. You... haven't really explained the shiny, though, just why she has a Togedemaru. Are her parents breeders who specifically breed for shinies or something? Maybe they have a "quality/rarity over quantity" sort of philosophy, which might explain their rivalry with Paniola Ranch beyond simply commercial competition.
Also, heck yes Alolan OC. I love Alola.

First, sorry about the misspelling. That shit is hard to spell.
Second, her parents breed Pokemon for battling and such, hunting for good stats for their clients. One of their customers was trying to get a perfect IV Togedemaru, and after a while, eventually gave up on his search, refusing the last egg that was produced. Her parents had no real use for it. After all, it wouldn't sell for very much, and they already had some better pokemon, so they decided to give it to their daughter, hoping to teach her some responsibility so she would be ready to have Pokemon of her own once she started her journey. She treated that egg the best she could, carrying it everywhere she went, and once that egg hatched, by pure luck, out rolled a shiny.

No, no, it's not too bad. (And "Togedemaru" is certainly a weird thing to have to spell, especially if you don't know Japanese or anything.)
And, honestly, some Trainers do get Shiny Pokemon by pure luck. I've found exactly 1 Shiny Pokemon in all my Pokemon games (Machoke in Platinum) and I certainly wasn't searching for it. If it's the only Shiny she obtains and it's not just there so people can go "oh, look how special she is!" it's probably all right. Togedemaru certainly isn't a cliched Pokemon by any stretch of the imagination either.

She also has visited Sinnoh and Hoenn. She is from Goldenrod City, and her childhood rival is Whitney, the gym leader. She's 19.

My oc is a fourteen year old lab assistant, who is from kalos. She travels to sinnoh quite often because of the relation the professor she works for has with the professor in sinnoh. She first started working there at the age of 10 starting out with smaller errands and was given time to develope her team. Now that she is 14 this is her completed team
Braixen (starter pokemon. Didnt evolve further because she does not battle much)
Sylveon (starting as an eevee and eventually into a sylveon)
Meowstic♀ (starting as an espurr she rescued from a river )
Piplup (given to her as an egg)
Pachirisu (caught in the wild)
Lucario (during her journey in sinnoh she bonded with a lucario and in the end asked him to jin her team)

story:he is from Veilstone city(sinnoh)his dad is the pokemon gym leader and his mom the day care main nurse, his sister works at the day care to and gave him an eevee that evolved into umbreon, his dad gave him a riolu and to his brotherAace(rival) a chimchar. He won 4 of the gym badges then he had to travel to kanto to help his other brother Rex(age:17) and caught a lapras there to add to his team

Okay, I know this is an old reply, but... when does his story take place? During the actual Sinnoh games, the Gym Leader of Veilstone is Maylene. You mentioned Team Galactic, so did Maylene take over the gym from Rod's dad shortly before the start of the Diamond/Pearl/Platinum games?

Hi! This tutorial and it's counterpart was extremely helpful, as I am in the process of making myself a Pokemon Trainer OC! I'd love your advice on her Pokemon team's balance.
Shiny Umbreon (I know, it's extremely noob-ish of me to do this, but I have a good story behind it. My OC Maylene's father is a Pokemon breeder. He breeds Pokemon to give to trainers who come by his breeding facility, and he donates some of his bred Pokemon to day cares for kids and Pokemon labs. Eevee is one of his favorite Pokemon to breed, and when he hatched a shiny Eevee, he gave it to his daughter as her first Pokemon at age 7. She always played with it and their friendship grew. Her dad challenged her to a Pokemon battle when she was 8, her first opportunity to fight. They decided to do it late at night, and once Eevee had won the battle against her father's Fletchling, it leveled up and evolved into Umbreon.)
Eevee (She plans on getting every Eeveelution)
Absol (Also given to her by her father)
Zigzagoon (Her first ever caught Pokemon)
Fennekin (Given to her by Professor Sycamore once she started her journey)

A shiny Umbreon is a favorite of many, but that also makes it extremely common. Have you thought about making it an Espeon instead? Espeon is less popular (for some reason), and would make your character seem less generic. And you shouldn't have your OC get every single Eevee evolution, unless they're a collector of some sort. Absol's a good choice, and so is Zigzagoon, but I'm not sure if Absol can be caught in the wild naturally (before the end of the game) in Kalos. Fennekin's the worst starter stat-wise, but I can't judge you on your choice since I picked it in-game myself. Pancham's pretty good, but Pangoro's even stronger.

With Absol, she didn't catch it, her father bred it and gave it to her. (Though once she got to the age of 11 her father refused to breed her any more Pokemon unless she earned them XD)
Yeah, for Fenniken, I think my character picked it only because it's a fire type. She wouldn't really be the kind of person to think about how strong they are or what their weaknesses are, so that's why I picked it for her.
With Umbreon, though, I'd like to change her but mainly I just think that no matter how cliche it is, it really fits the character personality wise and to go with Espeon would be breaking her character a bit. And with the every single eeveelution, she is a collector-ish. She's not the type of person that really wants to catch every pokemon, she just really wants to build a team of pokemon she likes.

A little powerful, I would say. It's a great mix of Pokemon, but I would consider making that Crobat into a plain ol Golbat (or maybe a Gligar?) and probably bumping one of them down to a stage 1. Houndour or maybe a Piplup?

I think a team like : Torterra, Houndoom, Feebas, Shieldon, Chatot and Vespiquen is a bit more balanced! It's definitely a lot more unique than a lot of teams I've seen, but they're all very evolved and it's not very fun to roleplay with a trainer that is TOO advanced. Hope this helps!

Great, I was just looking for some help in designing my OC (the outfit, because I wanted to start there and develop the character later, haha) and now I want to write a Pokemon fanfiction, even though this idea has never crossed my mind before. xD

I'd just like to point out that Ash caught an Aipom in Kanto, May caught a Bulbasaur in Hoenn, and Iris got her Dragonite in Unova. So if the anime doesn't feel the need to make pokemon only in their in-game area, I don't see why I can't have catch a Chimcar in Johto
