Description EDIT 5/24/12: Changed the tutorial a little! Less doodles, more text and advice. Hope it is a little clear and better to understand. Thank you all so much for all the favs and comments. I love hearing about all of your ideas! Hopefully I'll get around to fixing Part II (and III?) around one day!!

A quick little tutorial I made for designing Pokemon OCs. I see some, uh, questionable ones out there. So I figured I'd give it a go and see how the reaction is and if anyone wants a part II or III.

And I'd like to say that these are general rules to follow and some guidelines to help. All rules have exceptions of course and plots and storylines really can help shape great charaters, even if they push the boundaries. Don't be afraid to experiment with more than the average trainer.

Hope it's okay and hope it gives you some ideas!

Edit: A-almost 50 favs! ;A; I'm so grateful! It was even added to a few groups! Thank you all so much!

What a lovely little how-to!

I'm not sure how much i can use this, since i allready have a pretty well-developed team an all, but it gave me a good few things to consider.

Not a bad start!

I find I enjoy figuring our exactly where and how my girl met the members her team (for reference, Cubone[starter], Aerodactyl, Umbreon, Raichu, Shedinja, and Arcanine) and how she gained their trust (as a rehabilitator by nature, all of hers were gifts or rescued abandons from other trainers, save the Cubone she befriended as a child - she's never wild-caught any and isn't interested in doing so). The regions thing is a good idea, though since she's not interested in trading and rarely left Lavender Town before she turned fifteen, I feel I may be pushing it with the Shedinja as it is even if it was abandoned. And the balanced human group is a good point too - I get a lot of fun having my Lavender country mouse travel with my girlfriend's spoiled Goldenrod city mouse. X3

And thanks for the point on the outfits - I tire of the miniskirts, I really do. Nothing WRONG with a miniskirt, it's just... not suited for traipsing through the brush. >_>

I would love to see more - this is well put-together and I'd like to see your thoughts on villain team characters, Leaders, and so on.

Aonyx In reply to StarlitSkvader [2011-01-26 04:51:43 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much!!

I really enjoy figuring out how my characters met their Pokemon as well! I think it's a good idea to at least get an idea of how you get your main two or three Pokemon, not just one day stumbled upon a shiny in the wild in a miniskirt and became bffz 4evzzz.

But I think a few exceptions are okay here and there. I'm guilty since both my leader OCs have a Alakazam and a Gengar. v_v

And your character sounds very well thought out and interesting! I love Cubones too. >< I'd like to see more original characters like that, since it seems most people are just like. "Here's my trainer. Here's my mixed up team."

Again, thank you for the feedback!

StarlitSkvader In reply to Aonyx [2011-01-26 05:03:30 +0000 UTC]

Well... the Leaders would make sense in having Trade Pokemon. They are after all more experienced (one assumes) and may have simply come across other Trainers who'd caught Pokemon that the OT wasn't compatible with personalitywise, but the Pokemon got along well with the new Trainer. If that makes sense.

And it seems as if on rare occasions Pokemon evolve prematurely, either to help their trainers or due to some crisis or simple force of will. (It would certainly explain all those lower-level evolved forms you can find, as well as wild versions of Pokemon who only evolve when happy with their Trainer.) If such an unorthodox evolution has a great story to it, it can be amazing to see! (Or not see - the reason Janice the Cubone is still a Cubone after working with her Trainer for so long is due to a throwaway line about Marowak being what Cubone becomes when it gets over the loss of its mother. The Cubone and the trainer are fully devoted to each other but neither is over the loss of a parent - until they both are, Janice cannot evolve. Unless it would be really cool for her to choose protecting her trainer over the attachment to her mother, but that hasn't happened in-story... yet.)

Sorry for rambling. XD

This is really awesome Will definitely help for when I create my pokemon OC. I'm gonna try to do a plot similar to my game experiences, is that a good idea or a bad idea? xD

Aonyx In reply to Heartiful [2011-01-26 04:26:53 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much!

I think it's a good idea! I think that there are a lot of different sides to a story too! Like my Psychic trainer, he "forsaw" the Groudon - Kyogre incident and that's why people could get to safety in time. I think there are tons of different angles and ways to incorperate the game storylines!

You're very welcome!

I agree with you! I mean I wanna do a spin off the game but put originality into it like you did, you know?

Aonyx In reply to Heartiful [2011-01-26 04:39:31 +0000 UTC]

Yes! And I think those are some of the most interesting, because people know the story already, but you're giving it a fresh new take!

May I give suggestions? I find this a pretty good tutorial overall, but I'm a little curious: This tutorial seems to be a little mixed with the anime and the games. The part of your team, well, I don't think you need to have pokemon who can fly, and surf and such. That's too much like the game. In real life (Well, anime life), you catch pokemon you like, mostly, or ones that are strong (or a mix of both reasons). You also say you would have to get a pet through trading, but I'm pretty sure you would only do that if you were playing a video game xD Although I do agree with you and not wanting to god-mod, considering most average trainers don't have legendaries... not even Ash has legendaries xD
Hope I helped, and made sense. If you disagree, I understand :3

Aonyx In reply to Aero-Wolf [2011-01-26 04:23:48 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I did seem to mix the both of them a little too much. I'm sort of a Bulbapedia nerd and I check it a lot for different stats and such, so I've seen some articles where there are trades in the anime. And I figure people would probably do that in real life, you know, if you wanted a Pokemon from a different land. And I was thinking that you don't need an OC for ALL the HMs, but it helps to have one that knows Surf, like Ash's Lapras or maybe having a Pokemon to Fly mail or help in emergancies. Does that make sense? ><

Mhmm :3 I kinda knew what you were saying, the wording was just a tiny bit off for me, but I need things detailed greatly so I'm sure it isn't your fault.
I was just playing soul silver and randomly searching things anyway xD
