Description
DL TO FULL VIEW the thing is retardedly hugeMY UNNECESSARILY LONG PRISMACOLOUR MARKER TUTORIAL with really bad spelling
lots of ppl have been asking me how I colour, I hope this can help even tho its really hard to understand and im really bad at explaining things and i dont even know what im doing half the time
original can be found:
total drawing time from sketch to finished scanned copy took me somewhere between 17-25 hours
SUM FAQs:
what medium do you use?
Prismacolor markers [link] I own a few copics, but I prefer prismacolors. Their nibs are harder, and so it's easier to make strong contrasts and bright, saturated blocks of colour. Don't get me wrong, I think copics' soft, brushy look is beautiful, both markers have their own unique style, I just personally prefer Prismacolors c:
where do you buy them?
I bought my first 40-something boxset at Micheals Craft Store back in 8th grade when they had some uber sale going on, since then I buy them on Dickblick.com cuz they're much cheaper xD
have you tried the generic DickBlick version of prismacolor markers?
I have a couple, but i havn't had the need to use them yet D: from what i can tell they're pretty much the same tho...
where do u buy ur white gel pen?
Micheals. I live there. it sucks up all my money. it's bad.
what paper do you use?
- I like to use my Copic brand marker paper best, it's thick and smooth, and so allows for much more color absorbance is that a word?so it's easier to get smooth blending, but regular printer paper works fine too, since it's thinner it gets saturated quicker, but will result in different, but just as nice results : D
some pictures i've done on normal 8.5x11 printer paper: [link] [link] [link]
UHM, theres probably more but i cant remember. IF YOU HAVE ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS, DON'T HESITATE TO ASK 8D

Kiki, you make it look so easy and AMAZING. No seriously, you are like my markers muse (if only I had more than two ' 3' ).
And I don't think I ever considered a background of scrap paper and stamps! BRILLIANT.

This has to be one of the best, most well explained tutorials ever. Despite that you were like 'yeah. Dunno what I am doing. Just put some color down. Hope it works.' I was like "At least she explained that." A lot of tutorials just skip a tonnnnnn of steps. But you told every thing in great detail. Like, you explained how you did every last part of the picture while most artists are like "I am gonna show you how I do skin. Figure everything else out yourself."

do you have the problem with the flesh
color (prismacolour) being a pink color
with almost a tan overtone? i was told
it was supposed to be a blush-tan
colour but when i bought it
(naturally at michaels) it was like that.
i dono where you're from but here
you can special order rubber stamps
from the store. also the dickblick
marker brand is just as good
but some of the colours come out
very dull. (the red one is bad) and
getting the right color can murder your
hands lol

Atomic-Clover In reply to lharvey1515 [2011-02-03 01:15:25 +0000 UTC]
lol yeah, i only use the flesh color marker for blushes and lips, layered on top of brick beige or eggshell. (my favourite colors for skin)
oh and i did not know that about rubber stamps! 8D omg awesome <3333
haha yeah, the only dickblick markers i have are some wierd shell/slate colors, and some tannish hues; so they already look really faded to me xD

Wow... this is just... awesome.
I'm sorry if I missed the answer to this, and don't hate me if I'm repeating questions please! But, do you have any issues when it comes to scanning? I have this issue of having marker work look nice and vibrant and then I scan it in and try to adjust the levels, and it comes out looking just... wrong! Any advice?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Atomic-Clover In reply to Nittletwister [2011-02-03 01:18:42 +0000 UTC]
yeah i used to have a problem when i used my printer-scanner combo thing, the scanner wasn't very good at all, so i invested in a scanner that was only a scanner off of ebay for $80, and it works really well for the most part : D i mean, i still have to adjust the levels on photoshop, but scanners that are just scanners (and not printers too) produce much better quality images c: idk, when i was shopping for scanners, i just looked for ones that were good with scanning photos, and got the cheapest one xD <3

Great tutorial, it explained everything simply but didn't leave out any detail (STAMPS, for crying out loud, that's GENIUS). I've always wanted to try copics, but I can never get the money...
I do have one question: what, do you think, is a good exercise for artists beginning to use copics?
👍: 0 ⏩: 2
Atomic-Clover In reply to Santy-Anno [2011-02-03 02:30:28 +0000 UTC]
hm, i second what ~lharvey1515 said, i personally prefer to hit the ground running, jumping right into things, and learning as i make mistakes and practice practice practice!
but if you want some advice that's copic specific, i dont use copics, so i'm probably not a good one to ask xD

lharvey1515 In reply to Santy-Anno [2011-02-03 01:06:46 +0000 UTC]
honestly draw and ink a bunch of
practice faces/limbs/clothing then
colour each individual thing. the
more you go over it the darker it
will be so, be the judge of hue.
and when you're satisfied with
each thing put them together to
create a whole picture.

Wonderful work! Thank you for taking the time to share your process with all of us. You make me want to get out my collection of texture stamps. Have you tried eraser carving? That way you could make exactly the stamp you want.

I LOVE my prismas. I dunno what I'd do with them. Prisma=love.
Oh, and two things that should be mentioned for Prisma users. You should test all your markers on a paper and label them so you know what each color looks like. A lot of times, the ink looks nothing like the label, and that could REALLY screw up a drawing.
Also, you can find REALLY good deals on prismas on eBay. I got mine, a set of 72 or so, for like $50. Really good deal. Bought them because a student bought them for a class, then decided to drop the class. : P

FFFFFNNNGHHH, OH MY GOD. You have no idea how helpful this is. There NEEDS to be more people who use Prismacolors. While SAI and PS and all that great computer colouring shit is absolutely fucking beautiful, I absolutely adore Prismacolor drawings with a burning freakin' passion.
