JIM PINKS
Jim is the son of a miner and an unhappy housewife. He grew up in Oreburgh City, full of mines and death-traps for small boys. His house was located obnoxiously close to the mines; when Jim played outside bulldozers were usually running ten feet away. More than once reporters and cameras came to their door during his childhood, yelling through the closed windows to talk to his father about the dangers of living so close to the mines. Apparently chemicals and nuclear waste were rampant all around, and it was rumored that this could have an effect on life nearby.

However, this was all ignored. Little Jim still played outside, watching burly hairy men drive trucks and ignoring his Buizel to try and distract Machops at work by throwing rocks at them.

One day while Jim was sitting on a pile of rocks just outside his tiny house, kicking Buizel around, a tall handsome man in a captain’s uniform came into Oreburgh, delivering something to the museum. He walked with such a confidence, he smiled nicely, and all the ladies wanted to say hello to him. Jim, like all of the other kids around, couldn’t help but trail his path, attempting to figure out what he was up to.

The Captain made a spectacle of showing them his various Pokemon: Qwilfish, Mantine, Poliwhirl. He told them about the big ships with lights and fishing, and traveling to other regions. Jim listened intently, still enticed long after all of the other kids became bored and went back to playing. Other regions sounded a lot better than a two room house crammed between a bunch of rocks. He asked the captain many questions about the sea-life until the man apologized and had to leave, leaving his hat with Jim as a gift.

Jim ran home, gushing to his parents about the captain and how he wanted to sail. His mother said nothing, but his father took his new hat and tossed it aside, telling Jim that he was going to be a miner, and that was that. But Jim picked up that hat, and kept on dreaming. Now when he was outside he was always seen with the captain’s hat, and his corner by his cot was taped with pictures of boats and the ocean. At night he stared at them until he fell asleep, and dreamt about being captain of his own ship. And as soon as he was old enough to go out of town on his own, he snuck out to Canalave City.

He stepped onto the cool pavement, amazed by the clean, crisp port, so different than his dusty rocky city. He wandered by the docks, marveling at the sheer enormity of the ships there. So different to see them in person and not on a piece of paper. He crossed the wooden bridge, following some sailor-looking fellows into the Harbor Inn. Inside, he got strange looks from the men, being a dirty, slightly cross-eyed ten year old who clearly didn’t belong. But Jim took no notice and stepped up to them, stating that he wanted to be a sailor.

The men laughed at him. They told him, you can’t be a sailor. You need money, and you need muscle. You’re just too young.

So young Jim waited, traveling, collecting badges, Pokemon, and other peoples' belongings with his trusty Sableye. He returned to Canalave to purchase a small boat after a few years, which he's had ever since. He taught himself about the workings, the techniques. He pored over books for hours in the library, the librarians cringing as his oily nose rested inches from the pages. The other sailors still gave him strange looks after all this time, being the only man in a torn clothes who didn’t bathe, talked to himself, and slept on his boat.

Jim is an experienced contest participant by now, being part of the Helios Conference and the original BFOI. He made it a good distance in both but this time will go even farther. After dropping out of the BFOI in Round 4 because he overslept and missed the round, Jim wandered around the islands in his boat, generally not paying attention to the goings-on of Ohana Islands. Now he's set to return and finds that shit is fucked up. Oh jeez. On the advice of his platonic girl-friend, Dylan Lakes, Jim will enter yet another contest anyways.

Personality:
Jim is very awkward and self-absorbed. He has a staring problem, he doesn't bathe regularly, he has a manic over-confidence. He is known for not treating his Pokemon very humanely. He likes to revel under the notion that he is an epic seaman.

Pokemon:

Floatzel(M): was Jim's first Pokemon, given to him at age six by his father. Floatzel is the Pokemon Jim like least; it reminds him of his father. Timid Floatzel is getting quite old, and has quite lost the will to deal with Jim's antics and bad treatment. Jim keeps him on a leash to keep him from drowning himself.

Grimer(F): is a new addition to Jim's team. Over his time away on the sea Jim found Grimer among his belongings. She refuses to leave because of all the filthy prime real estate on board. Generally a friendly care-free Pokemon.

Sableye(M): is Jim’s favorite Pokemon by far. He treats Sableye much better than his other Pokemon (although that still isn’t very well). To Jim, Sableye is a prize and the only Pokemon he actually tried hard to capture. He is mostly a pawn though, stealing things to sell for money, food, etc. Sableye is an oddball and doesn’t socialize with the other Pokemon at all.

Swanna(F): also a new member. Swanna was a gift from Dylan. Jim doesn't know what to do with this Pokemon, but keeps it around for Dylan's sake. Swanna is very quiet.

Qwilfish(M): was caught near the power plant New Mauville, where it had been ravaged by run-off and sludge. Actually, there were several Pokemon stuck in the same situation, but this particular one bit Jim as he came close and he liked its feistiness. In an uncharacteristic act of kindness, Jim helped the Qwilfish out of the sludge and easily captured it for himself. Qwilfish is extremely ungrateful for its rescue, and whenever it gets the chance pokes Jim with one of his spikes. It is a very moody, angry little bastard.

Huntail(M): was caught while Jim was he was scoping out the Battle Frontier, I mean he stole it. A trainer had his Huntail swimming around in a pool, and Jim, you know, snatched that shit up. Huntail is very clueless, and stupid.
