Description
DOWNLOAD FOR FULLVIEW!I noticed a lack of MLP-style-in-Inkscape tutorials on dA ... also, my bf mentioning (somewhat in passing) a desire to give Inkscape a try. In the interests of getting him and YOU to draw some ponies, I threw this humble tutorial together.
Skill level is beginner+, all you need to do is read this and download Inkscape if you haven't already [link] and you'll be ready to go! This is a complete walkthrough, including Inkscape basics!
So, to any Inkscape newbies or aspiring pony-makers who stumble across this tutorial - I hope you get some use out of it.
To ~cptlfrghtr - YOU BETTER GET SOME USE OUT OF IT. u__u

Great guide, this helped a lot. This is my first attempt...never even used Inkscape before.

What do you think?
I used the same color/style as the example too, I will eventually redo the design to something unique.

I dont understand how you did the legs because whenever I do it, the body and leg lines intersect

When you make the shape, you must add a color inside of the shape, and then the legs go over the body, unless you have the legs on behind the body...

Thank you very much for sharing this tutorial. I understand how to use a bunch of tools much better now, and learned some neat new tricks.

As you can see, I still have a long way to go, but this helped me somewhat.

Thank you, I was almost done with my picture with my first try of Inkscape, THEN IT CRASHED.
Of course, me being me, I didn't save it AT ALL.
I suck.

I'm having some issues with the ears and muzzle. I was able to make the segments to make them both but when I try to use the make symmetric button on the nodes. I can only get one of the nodes to have the handles. I was able to work around this problem a few times but now I can't. Is there a certain way you make the segments in order to get the handles on all of the nodes or is it something I missed?

Whenever I fill part of the pony, it leaves a white outline bordering the line and the fill. How do I get rid of that?
Oh, and thanks a bunch! This really helped me along the path of Vectoring and even though you use a single, 4px line, I find that make one then following around it gives it a bit more cartoony feel, but that's just me.
Great job!

I downloaded Inkscape a few days ago, but didn't really get to try it out until now. My first drawing using inkscape was a pony, made with the help of your tutorial. And it came out a lot better than I hoped, great tutorial, thank you so much.

Thank you so much! I just downloaded Inkscape today and had a lot of fun with this tutorial, though I still had some trouble in a few areas. For instance, my legs look like separate objects 'cause I didn't know I could right-click to stop drawing without clicking on the first node. It doesn't look as good as it would on paper, but definitely a lot better than using MS Paint!

This is supposed to be an general Inkscape tutorial showing the basics of drawing ponies in that program. As much as I would have loved to give examples of different poses / expressions that was simply out of the scope of this piece. Not to mention it's something that's been covered by plenty of other tuts - for example:
[link] [link] [link] [link] [link]
In addition I'd recommend going to the MLP:FIM wiki and looking at various screencaps, that way you can get references for every pose imaginable. The basics I laid out here will certainly work for most upright poses.

I'm having trouble with the fifth panel. I can't seem to find the edit paths thing. I feel kinda stupid for asking, but I have looked all over the window and hadn't found it yet. Other than that, I love this tutorial. Very indepth so far.

BellaCielo In reply to PoniesAndCats [2012-04-07 18:00:34 +0000 UTC]
Are you talking about the "Edit nodes by paths" tool? If that's the case, it can be found directly below the "Select and transform objects" tool ( the upper-most button in the left-hand toolbar). If you look at the fifth panel again, you can recognize it as the one button in the toolbar that's been selected.
I hope that helps, and sorry for not getting back to you sooner.

I have Inkscape, and I've been trying to make a My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic vector ever since the moment I got Inkscape. Your tutorial helped me a lot. Now my tries look less terrible than my last attempt.
I see you use a Mac. Did you get tired of Windows? I hate Windows. I use Ubuntu. It's an open-source operating system. You might have heard of it.

I'm glad you found this tutorial useful, I love hearing that my tuts were able to help people.
I switched to a Mac mostly because I'd always wanted one - the tons of trouble my two Windows machines were causing me at the time (both on a software AND hardware level) pushed me toward switching as well. Ubuntu is an excellent OS, I used it for close to a year before my last laptop died and would love to use it again in the future. ^^

Thanks.
Ehhhh, Choco and my boyfriend aren't morons. >_> They just aren't familiar with vector art/working with Inkscape. There is a fairly large logical learning-curve involved with scalable vector graphics; once you can get over the initial oddness and stop thinking of working with SVGs as "drawing", it becomes a lot easier.

Hellbeholder In reply to BellaCielo [2011-11-24 16:31:37 +0000 UTC]
Oh, uhm.... Sry bout that.
Yeah, I guess your right. I just learned about vectors in Illustrator, so I'm pretty familiar with them. Thats why this Inkscapestuff doesn't look so difficult to me.
