About Port's aggressiveness, he's not usually like this. Actually most of the time he's very laid back and friendly. But when it comes to his vital regions he's extremely defensiveHe may not look like much nowadays but he used to be very good at war, especially when in his home turf (Spain tried to take over his house countless times but he never managed to beat Port in open battle, even though he's 5 times bigger)
So you see why he attacked France with a chamber-pot (especially considering France's pervy tendencies)

Oh, btw, I thought Spain did take over Portugal? I think it was between December 1580 and 1640, but I can't quite remember the details- although I know it was over a succession crisis, so no battles really took place.
It's a shame people forget Portugal. Many people I know don't even know where it is! But he's an epic country, in my opinion <3 I always see him as Spain's very intelligent older brother who is close friends with England and is a keen explorer. I wish Himaruya would hurry up and decide on a design for him!

Yes, Port's loony boss got himself killed and Spain took his opportunity to extend his claws (he's a nation kleptomaniac). Otherwise he would have never managed since he could never beat Port on the battlefield
I would rather call him sneaky/crafty than intelligent. He did a lot of stupid things too
But yeah, when it comes to exploring (or feeling challenged and motivated) he's one hell of a worker x3

Hm, I'm not sure about that. It's hard to say. I personally think that Spain could have taken on Portugal on equal grounds, although whether he would have won is a different story. I mean, the Spanish were going toe-to-toe with the Ottomans, and that's not something to scoff at. The Turk's seige cannons are scary! They shot 200lb canon balls! Maybe the Spanish were crazy or something XD Either way, they destroyed the Ottomans at Lepanto in 1571. And, no matter what Iggy would say about the Armada, the Spanish kicked our arses in that war. So, although I can't say that Spain would definitely be able to beat Portugal in battle, I think it's unreasonable to say that Spain could never beat Portugal in battle.
I envision him chiefly as an explorer too

Have you ever heard of the story where only 5 portuguese kept an entire turkish army from breaching the fort? Or when a portuguese fishing vessel took on several spanish ships and made them suffer a humiliating defeat? Or how they were so good at shooting the cannons they could fire the cannonballs across the water like skipping rocks and hit ships at water level, making them sink? Or about a portuguese soldier that was so feared by the moors they called him the boogeyman? Or how the soldier holding the portuguese flag kept holding it with his teeth, after Spain chopped off both his hands and he bleed nearly to death? Or the guy who managed to walk right into the enemy camp during daylight and return alive, only to keep his promise to return the helmet his friend borrowed him? Or how a soldier who ran out of bullets but still had gunpowder for one more he pulled out one of his own teeth as a replacement? And did you know a good part of the Spanish armada had "borrowed" portuguese ships and sailors?
Seriously though, Port wouldn't have survived with Spain as his neighbor if he wasn't able to keep him at bay. Mostly through trickery and cunning rather than force, but when it comes to worse Port would rather put his pride first and fight to the death than to surrender and obey others
And the reason he's often victorious (especially in his home turf) is because people underestimated him by looking only at the numbers. They forget Port likes to wrestle with bulls barehanded for fun
