Description
2016 Update information:This drawing was my entry for a "Draw Charlize Theron contest" held by a DeviantArt user back in September, 2008.
Unfortunately, there are no longer any links to the other contest entries - as the competition holder has now left DA.
Please also check out my coloured version of this drawing: blurhead.deviantart.com/art/Chβ¦
Original 2008 description:
At last, finally finished it, and just in time !!
I Started this about 3 weeks ago, and have been working
on it every chance I got in the last 3 weeks.
Hopefully it looks like it was worth all that time and effort !
I have really enjoyed this opportunity to draw Charlize,
she is one of my fav actresses, and I have wanted to draw her for a long time.
It looks as though this competition has brought the
best out in many other artists as there are some brilliant
works that have been submitted.
I used Faber Castell Polychromos colour pencils
(black and cold grey 1-6) on Strathmore Bristol smooth
paper.
Many thanks for looking, and check out all the other
competition entries !!

So classy. She could have made it in the days of "Old Hollywood" just as well.

I must admit that I don't always keep upto date on the latest stars very much, although I think that Margo Robbie really really appeals in a similar way (but that's just my opinion of course) !

Margo Robbie is a beauty, that is true, though I have so far only seen her in Wolf of Wall Street.

There's a certain intangible glow to this that so few artists can achieve. Looks better than the real Charlize. Definitely worth the time!!!

Fabulous work, Phil! I love how smooth it looks, like graphite airbrushing in a way. I've never been able to achieve the same smoothness with my FC cps on SB smooth before. But I might just try again after seeing this.
The likeness is superb. Love her smokey eyes, the poutiness of her lips, and I really like how you did her top.
Best of luck to you in the contest!

Thanks Michelle,
This (Bristol) paper is quite new to me, and I have not tried out
graphite on it yet, which could be interesting.
I was even thinking of wexperimenting with graphite and colour pencil
on the same drawing, not on top of each other, but certain areas
graphite and other areas CP.
The only thing that turns me off graphite has been that it does not
seem to scan very well,
With this Charlize drawing I used my Canon SLR digital which seems to have picked up much more of the light grey shading than my scanner
would.
This was the first time that I have uploaded a drawing taken with the
camera, so I might go back and try graphite again.
Wow I'm rambling a lot today ........

Bristol Smooth is all I've ever used with my graphite drawings. I just like the texture plus it's very inexpensive paper. Only cps never worked on it for me.
I say go for it. I've done a few dual color drawings and I've always loved the effect I got from it. Although I used watercolor pencils for those.
Wow, you have a SLR ... impressive. I never seem to get any good results with my scanner, and the only time I get a decent photo of a drawing is when I photograph it in morning sunlight.
LOL @ rambling. I don't mind at all.

Yes, I took the Charlize one in the early morning (before going to work)
I tried to scan it but as soon as did I could see that it had washed out so much of the light grey shading.
Scanners are so much "sharper" though than cameras.
we really something between the 2 !!

Yes, that's what I try to do as well. That light is just perfect for photos. Not as harsh as afternoon sunlight.
Scanning graphite can be tricky, depending on how thick the graphite went on, I usually end up with that horrible sheen. Naturally scanners are sharper since the image is right up close to the scanner as opposed to the camera.
we really something between the 2 !!
Say what? LOL!

Ha ha, well I'm looking for something that captures
all the shades (like the camera) and is as sharp as the scanner !

Does the next competition also involve drawing Charlize? or is it some other hot mamma?

blurhead In reply to Area-44 [2008-10-01 00:41:39 +0000 UTC]
Well I am trying to steer the guy who is running the Charlize one into using Kate Beckinsale,
and does seem quite receptive to this
but I don't think he will be doing any more with
Chalize as the subject unfortunately.

Beautiful, I dont know how you people get the shadings so good, I use smooth board and I always get smudges...

Thanks it takes a lot of practice, and most of all a huge amount
of patience.
Plus being willing to put the drawing down (when you run out of patience !) and go back to it another time.

Thanks for the advice, and one more thin, which paper do you use? I assume Strathmore Bristol Smooth
