Description I really didn't like how long the last picture took, especially considering that it wasn't overly ambitious or super detailed or anything.

So to de-stress myself and just have fun I drew Jotaro and Spot (version 2.0) because, apart from drawing monsters, drawing rabbit children and lizards are the best way to relax XD

I didn't put Jotaro's pattern on his kimono because I didn't want to clutter the picture... besides I couldn't find a pattern I liked that matched his close enough >> ... but mostly the clutter thing.

The pose was inspired by a concept drawing done by Kim Hyung Tae.

I really like =purplekecleon 's sense of colour in her comic "Trevor's Race" that she did recently. I tried to see if I could get a similair look, perhaps to play around with more properly in the future. For now, I merely settled for trying to duplicate the look and feel and see if I could figure out how she handled her colours in that comic. (without using any eyedropper tool, just pure sight)

The day I drew this I had had a life drawing class earlier, and the model had been in a pose where his leg was in slight perspective very much like Jotaro's here. it made it a LOT easier to draw since I remembered what I did to make it work during class.

I'm going to bed now |D
Hopefully I'll draw a proper picture over the weekend XDD this took about an hour and a half to do.

FUN BUT USELESS FACT!!
Usagi's outfit is blue. Mariko's is usually pink. Jotaro's is purple, and Kenichi, Usagi's rival who despises him, wears orange (the opposite of Blue on the colour wheel)

SEE?? I TEACH YOU SOMETHING EVERY DAY!

like his innocent expression! his pose looks pretty much like an actual childs. spot is drawn very well with his neck turning like that. his kimono looks very much like a peasant childs. so, yeah, you're right, pattern would have cluttered. but hey, jotaro is a peasant child.

Jotaro isn't a peasant child though. Not at all. He's a samurai child. There's a very big difference.
but thanks, I'm glad you like it.

Oh orange is oppostie on the wheel of blue? Haha how did I missed that..but now I think of it. it's the complementer thing, right? Like red to green, purple to yellow. Is this that system you meantioned?

XDD thank you very much! I wasn't trying to go for a Japanese print colour as I wasn't looking at any reference, but I secretly wanted it to look a little bit like one, so I'm actually very glad you picked up on that! 8'D

Very cool. I'm not familiar with Usagi Yojimbo world characters, but I really like how this picture turned out and all with the simplicity of color and no shadings with texture added over it... so neat..especially how you bordered the background color

C-Puff In reply to Heiros [2009-12-16 00:14:02 +0000 UTC]

XDD remember when you told me how you did the background colour first for your 'stare down' picture? Well I tried doing that when I drew this one, which I think had a lot to do with the overall colour scheme X33 So thank you for that pointer

I'm really glad you like it, thank you so much!

The perspective is great, with both figures giving the sense of an even floor without a floor being obvious. The lines are good and strong without overpowering the shadows or colors.

Most of my art work revolved around weaponry, which is a serious bitch to get perspective right on (if not a direct look at the weapon).

Mybe next time you should try drawing a pattern for yourself?

I agree! We need more fanart of him on dA D'8 it exists but.. ..there's not enough XDDD at ALL!

I tried creating the pattern myself, but as I was doing so I realised it was making the picture too busy and killing the contrast between Jotaro and the leaves in the background, so I scrapped the idea. next time I draw him properly I'll have to make the pattern though XD;

C-Puff In reply to 54viruses [2009-12-12 22:39:22 +0000 UTC]

>3 O RLY??
Well how's this little nugget (and this is no spoiler since, as I said, it hasn't been addressed in the books that I've read yet, so this is just straight from my mind) Usagi served under Lord Mifune, who was at the time Lord over the province Usagi's village is located and therefore automatically made Usagi his vassal. However, Mifune was killed during a battle against Lord Hikiji (Referred to as "The Dark Lord" in the comic. He's considered the "Ultimate bad/evil guy" in the story and is merciless, cruel and once he's conquered a neighbouring province stops paying attntion to it and its needs) Anyway, so Mifune was conquered and Hikiji took over his lands. So now Usagi's village is governed by Lord Hikiji (this they do mention once or twice in the comic). Jotaro has expressed interest in sword fighting, and has told Usagi that he plans to join a school of swordsmanship once he's old enough. (He is of samurai class because, even though his 'Father' Kenichi never served as a samurai, he was still born within the samurai class and is the magistrate of Usagi's village). Usagi has even encouraged Jotaro and told him to look for usagi's sensei instead of joining a school.

SO HERE'S THE PROBLEM as far as my foresight goes:
If Jotaro conditions himself to become a samurai, his goal will be to serve under his Lord... However, his Lord Happens to be Hikiji, who Usagi considers an enemy (not one he fights against actively but one whose plans he constantly has to sabotage for the betterment of others).
..... I see a bad moon rising

Why doesn't he know? Is it explained in your story on FF.com? I can't remember the title of it.....sorry. Whats the title of your story again?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

C-Puff In reply to nekoshappiness33 [2009-12-14 06:33:33 +0000 UTC]

XDD I didn't explain it in my story on FF.net no XD I didn't see a need to retell a story Stan Sakai had already written.

Basically, Usagi had a girlfriend before he left his village to become a Samurai. erm.. ..Things.. ..happened.... before he left and she became pregnant. However She didn't tell him and while he was in service married another man (who knew she was having Usagi's child). Usagi only found out the child was his when the boy was already about 8 years old. His once-girlfriend, Mariko, begged him to keep his distance from Jotaro because she was afraid he would come between Jotaro and the man Jotaro grew up thinking was his father.
Usagi agreed and currently (where I am at least) Jotaro doesn't know his 'Uncle' is actually his father, and not Kenichi. It's.. ..a very complicated situation XD;;

nekoshappiness33 In reply to C-Puff [2009-12-14 10:47:59 +0000 UTC]

Awww, thats sad. At least Usagi can still watch him grow up and be a part of his life. Even though Jotaro calls him "Uncle" instead of "Father". Thanks for explaining it to me. I didn't know that Usagi had his own comic.
