This is one of the most powerful pictures I have seen on here in a while.

Cool. I've heard about these. I heard the huge Red Wood trees don't get new babies anymore unless theres a controlled fire(on tv, at least).

Lots of plants need fire to help germinate. It could very well be true.

for those who live in countries that every summer are decimated by fires, this picture is quite disturbing, but very well done and with and excellent theme

thanks I appreciate that! Does your country employ controlled burning at any level?

i don't think so! although everyone thinks the fires are set out by mischievous hand, they probably are planned because burnt wood sells cheap. i don't think we promote burning at any level. only to burn old stuff and the like. keep up the good work

Lovely picture
I've always been confused about controlled burning and its point, but your explanation there clears it up a little. Do you only burn when it's dead then?

Captain-Planet In reply to decision-pear [2007-04-13 19:30:24 +0000 UTC]
yes like in early spring or late fall. When things are too green they don't burn well, and make lots of smoke. But the roots are still alive after a fire if it is a native plant, since prairie plants have deep roots they will just grow again. Also the ash from the dead plants returns nutrients to the soil. But if it is a weed, it will die in the fire because the roots are shallow and won't survive, which is good because then the native plants will fill their places.

lol! I haven't heard that in a while! What are you refering to, natural processes?

decision-pear In reply to Captain-Planet [2007-04-13 23:28:19 +0000 UTC]
How do you mean? If you mean 'how cunning', then i meant the whole process of the burning to save etc. was cunning.
If you meant 'by gum' then i was just using it as an expression, no reference to trees heh heh. But a co-incidence anyhow.
If you meant neither, than none of that probably made much sense...

it's tough to control fire, but i know what it means to deal with invasives many times nature takes care of that by Herself

Captain-Planet In reply to Ilharess [2007-04-13 14:05:40 +0000 UTC]
yes by doing burning we are facilitating a natural process that would get rid of invasives. But because area is surrounded by homes we have to do it in a controlled fasion instead of letting the fire come when it wants to. Fake nature is not as good as real nature, but the end result is a better habitat.
