Description In the dark and treacherous alleys of Vermistad, murder is a part of everyday life. The waterways and back streets become graveyards, where dozens of corpses are discovered every day. While some of these killings are the work of unlicensed cutthroats, the majority are executed under the auspices of the assassins' trade associationβ€”the euphemistically titled Worshipful Company of Rat-Catchers.

For most victims, their demise arrives at the end of a knife in a dim alley or from a sip of poisoned wine. One exception to this is Jerris Fellspyke, the renowned condottiere who stood tall during the Glorious Uprising of 1036 and gained hero status for his role in King's Lygol's downfall. Whispers began to spread in the aftermath of the revolution, hinting that the mercenary captain, with his private army, Fellspyke's Free Company, might stage a military coup.

While crossing the ancient Byrose Bridge, an unseen assassin's projectile found its mark in his side, causing him to topple from his horse and plunge into the murky waters of the canal below. No one could attest to who fired the fatal arrow or from where it had come. Witnesses described a projectile that appeared out of nowhere, like a vengeful bolt from the heavens.Β

There were mutterings of dark sorcery in the taverns and marketplaces, but few lent credence to the rumours that the Arch-Magister himself, wise, avuncular Kellandren, conjured the arrow that killed Jerris Fellspyke. But it is worth mentioning that Kellandren's grimoires contain an incantation known as "Yorzaff's Unerring Arrow of Inescapable Vengeance," a spell that empowers the caster to fire an arrow that relentlessly seeks its prey, guided by a drop of the intended victim's blood. The sorcerous projectile can snake its way through twists and turns, scaling walls and changing direction, to strike its target with unfailing accuracy.
