//warning, Chi rant 8'DHOLY SHIT. LOOK. IT'S AN OPINION. AND A RELIGIOUS ONE AT THAT. ABANDON ALL LOGIC!11!!!1
Okay, so on a more serious note:
Due to the fact that I've seen so many anti-prayer stamps, I've decided to make this one for those who are for it.
I do believe prayer works, because it's worked for me and I've seen it work for others. Through my experiences, I have come to the conclusion that praying /can work/. And before people go batshit, please understand that I happen to have an opinion /just like you/! No way! Does my differing opinion from yours make me a dumbass? Hmmm, I guess that would depend on how strong your feelings are for those who see things differently from you c:
On a more detailed note since I realize people are going to want to stray from the specific topic of this stamp (the opinion that prayer works)-- I'll leave these bullets here:
Lastly, if you're going to comment, please be mature or leave something funny.
And for goodness' sake, don't be an ass and attack people who are commenting on here. That's just plain rude. And if you want a definition of "attack", sucks for you. Find a dictionary. Or common sense. Either - or both! - are a good idea.
TL;DR - Read it, ya lazy derp :V

I can accept an infinite universe and infinite time without questioning... but I guess I have come to measure love and attention in a materialistic sense.

'Francis Galton was the first to analyse scientifically whether praying for people is efficacious. He noted that every Sunday, in churches throughout Britain, entire congregations prayed publicly for the health of the royal family. Shoudn't they, therefore, be unusually fit, compared to the rest of us, who are prayed for only by our nearest and dearest? Galton looked into it, and found no statistical difference.'

As an atheist, I don't believe that prayer is effective in changing the outcome of events or things, or what have you.
As a person, I do believe that prayer is effective in changing the feelings some people might have about things, but in the end action always wins over making oneself feel better about some injustice or event. (That's not to say that prayer is terrible and horrible and has no purpose, like I said it's good for making someone feel better about stuff, and when offered to other people it's a nice gesture to let them know that you care.)
Anyway, I'm glad that you're being open in regards to the comments here. It's very rare that people sharing their thoughts on topics such as these will keep comments enabled. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us all

I also believe that prayer works and that you should still take some form of action that is within your own abilities. I know it worked for my cat. She get extremely ill, we brought her to the vet, but they said that she'd probably die anyways. They gave us some medicine though they doubted it would help and sent us home with us telling us to make her comfortable and come back if we wanted to put her down. We did give her the medicine, and all though I believe that was probably a major factor in the fact that she's still here now, another factor is that we prayed every night for her to get better, which I think is what might have ultimately saved her.

I agree. While I do think taking action first is important and something we should do, praying after does help the soul for some people. I know it helps me in times of crisis when I try everything but still feel lost <= )

If god already has a plan and already know everything including the future, why would he switch everything around due to a prayer he already knew would be said back when he created the universe?

Sexy philosophy. <3
I have a philosophy instructor that was just going over this in the last unit on religion. Upset the Christians and the Atheists with allot of that stuff: the documentary hypothesis, and explaining Aquinas' and Augustine's doctrines the same way he had Socrates and Aristotle: as if they were true. XD
I'm attending the class as a freshman, though, so you probably know allot more than me. :>

You bring up a very interesting point. I would like to believe that God knows all of the possible outcomes of a situation. In other words God knows many futures, but it is up to us to choose one. If God really did know what was going to happen in the sense that he knows everything I don't believe there would be such a thing as free will.
That actually made a lot better sense in my head. O.o?

Kelsey-Kat In reply to Cr1kk3t [2012-04-25 02:35:37 +0000 UTC]
But my question is, how will prayer change god's mind?
Also, unrelated, I'm a determinist, I don't believe in free-will as stated in the free-will thesis. I believe everything we do is determined by our genetics and our environment :]

ChikitaWolf In reply to Kelsey-Kat [2012-04-25 20:15:41 +0000 UTC]
Hm~ I'm going to agree with ~XxchantellexX - it is an interesting point.
The best way I feel I can put it is that it's not really a "change of God's mind". Once again, like ~XxchantellexX said, God knows all of the possible outcomes of a situation - I would think He would already know when someone would pray and what the outcome would be. Would He be changing His mind if He already knew the prayer would come and be "answered"? It's kind of confusing to explain, sorry
Oh! I've never met a determinist - that's an interesting view point

Kelsey-Kat In reply to ChikitaWolf [2012-04-25 20:27:30 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, but if that's true then do you really have free will? If god knows you will pray and he will answer it, than is there another option?
Determinism is pretty much the most accepted view within the philosophy field at most colleges, from what I've heard. I've never met a philosophy professeur who believed in free will xD

ChikitaWolf In reply to Kelsey-Kat [2012-04-25 20:33:39 +0000 UTC]
I do believe we have free will, yes. I believe that we do have a choice and that we have consequences for those choices - hence a punishment for sin and whatnot. God knows all, and He also knows about what we will choose, but that doesn't mean He's making our choices. That's what I think anyway |D ( I hope I answered your question? The second part confused me a little, sorry D: )
Oh my Thanks for telling me - I'll have to study up on it more then! I'll be going to college soon after all |D
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Kelsey-Kat In reply to ChikitaWolf [2012-04-25 20:41:44 +0000 UTC]
Free-will, as defined by the free-will thesis, holds that at least some of the time, someone has more than one course of action that he can perform. This is the least that must be true in order for it to be said that there is free will.
If somebody knows what will happen and what you will 'choose' than there is only one possible future and you do not actually have free will.

ChikitaWolf In reply to Kelsey-Kat [2012-04-25 20:52:55 +0000 UTC]
Ah, I see now! Thanks for explaining! |D
The free will as in the ability to act at one's own discretion? The ability for a person to make their own choice? I think we have a definition confusion - that or we're talking about free-will in a different way?
But while that person knows what you will choose, you still have the choice to make yourself. You are the one deciding which way to take in the end regardless of whether someone already happens to know what it will be - because that person is not choosing it for you. They simply know, whereas you are the one really making the choice.
