Description My first Avatar-inspired deviation! yeah, only took like - a year and a half, but the timing seemed right and hopefully this turned out to be what is arguably one the the coolest pieces inspired by that movie anyone will ever see

Scroll down to zoom in
Scroll up to zoom out.
Or use Shift or Control keys to do either.
Click and drag to look around.

I could have gone for a ground view showing one of the many epic landscapes. But that can always be done later. I don't see much of the space scene seen very early on in the film, so that combined with the fact I promised many people my next 360 "Vue It" work was going to be a space one just meant it was the right theme to choose. It was at least lighter in polygon count than my first two that were very "tree-heavy" bumping their polygon counts into the several millions which resulted in countless crashes. Still had a fair amount with this but comparatively not as bad so bouts of swearing while making this was minimal

As for technical aspects, this was testing a version of Vue that can't actually render planets to its limits, that along with clever use of postwork allowed me to simulate a pretty authentic looking world below the viewer anyway. Rendering would have taken eons for me and so I got help, so I'll jump to credits for help before continuing:
SOULSSHINE Did the rendering after I made the scene, took WAY too long on my comp.
Smattila exported it into this Flash format after I had completed all the artwork.
Anyway, this required constant hopping between Vue 7 and Photoshop as some areas needed to be painted on and then brought back into the 3D world again to be rendered with the right amount of distortion and then composed in Photoshop again etc. I won't ramble on, Ill just say it was as hard to do as it looks, so just enjoy it!

Others in the "Vue It" series:
Vue it - Pine Shrine
Vue it - Christmas Village
Vue It - Holiday House
Vue It - Haunted Harvest

All artwork and animations in my gallery are my copyrighted property and are not to be used without my permission, this includes any screenshots of parts of the scene.

That is mind blowing! The way the ship totally changes shape is the coolest. Just out of general curiousity, are you going to do a space scene that is purely out of your own mind? That would be sweet!

Chromattix In reply to Death-by-KIRA [2011-05-19 12:23:50 +0000 UTC]

Lol, the ship changing shape is actually just due to the perspective warping but hopefully it helps make it looks like it's passing or something

I will do original space scenes eventually, ones more bizarre indeed, but now not for quite some time

My mind:

absolutely stunning. I love looking at the pieces you share with us that take us to where your imagination has been. They give me a nice point of departure for my own stellar fantasies as well. Beautiful job, Matt!

Lol, also was listening to Star Traveller by Ferry Corsten when I saw this. My brain was GONE :3 [link]

Thankyou, and that's a good way of describing it, showing others where my imagination has been. Seems like a waste to to share it

omgomgomgomgomgomgomg

I've never seen Avatar but OMG this is gorgeous! I accidentally spun around too fast and I actually got dizzy, as if I was whirling around in space above the planet. So pretty!!! I had fun zooming in and out, too.

I'd totally love to see more space environments!

Chromattix In reply to Ekqo [2011-05-19 09:20:44 +0000 UTC]

Spinning fast can be fun, but we all know slow motion is the true way to soak it all in

Glad you enjoyed it so much. More space ones will be done, original non-movie inspired ones too. But that will probably be a long time off

Hey Matthew, what can I say that hasn't been said? This is by far the most awe inspiring piece of art I've seen in a long time. Congratulations. And if this doesn't get a DD real soon, I'll have to resign from DA.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to hoevelkamp [2011-05-19 09:12:12 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, I'm glad you like it. I remember trying your planet creation methods for starters but since we're so close to this one I realized I needed real, volumetric clouds (which were a lot of extra work and render time, but worth it ) Oh a DD would be cool, things just just crashed and burned for me compared to last year...don't know where 90% of my watchers went But even without one I'm just glad to have finally completed this enormous project. One less "big" thing to worry about now

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hoevelkamp In reply to Chromattix [2011-05-19 09:38:45 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I'd say this is a pretty big thing, I dare say its a milestone in your spaceart career. Well, most people will love the gas giant or Pandora as a whole, maybe the spacecraft. I really dig the clouds. Especially the two thunderheads. Any pointers how you accomplished those?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to hoevelkamp [2011-05-19 13:36:44 +0000 UTC]

The two thunderclouds were painted partly, some thick clumps of clouds were in the right spot, but they were just normal-shaped clouds like all the others. I used careful digital painting over the top of them to create the "anvil" of them both and added some shadows onto the main cloud-body beneath it to make it look like it was rendered like that

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hoevelkamp In reply to Chromattix [2011-05-21 08:20:10 +0000 UTC]

You sure did a good job on that. It's hard to tell where render ends and painting begins.

Holy crud, that's Avatar-inspired?

Heh, had a feeling, but wasn't totally sure until I finally switched from the Wii Internet to my actual PC to be able to view this for myself.

Needless to say, your efforts were once again well spent in creating this enormous intergalactic environment. The details are stellar as is the sense of depth, especially when you get a chance to look down into the atmosphere below. And I'm really digging the zoom-in/out feature as well. It comes in handy for getting a closer glimpse at all the different areas and such.

Keep it up dude! Another nice job going on right here.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to Bowser81889 [2011-05-19 09:08:46 +0000 UTC]

It sure is...I'm glad you also got a chance to view it on a normal PC too, I'm not sure what the Wii internet is like but I think this would load and display better on a PC anyway (says the guy who spent hours today playing the Wii )

The zoom in and out feature is fortunately a default thing that the program automatically applies, just as well since anything that requires technical "programming" to add just isn't my area of expertise

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Bowser81889 In reply to Chromattix [2011-05-19 19:16:57 +0000 UTC]

Yeah...it wouldn't load diddily squat here on the Wii, so luckily I got to see it for myself on the PC instead. You really have to appreciate the effort that goes into something like this, so you're to be commended for going all the way on this one.

Ah okay...well I guess we can both consider ourselves lucky for its inclusion then.

It's so calm and peaceful, I love the color of the giant planet next to Earth. Especially because it looks like the place to go since Earth seems to be having a hurricane and all...

Thanks! I was pleased with the colours, was a bit of effort to get them just right but they're quite true to life I think Yeah there's a hurricane going on, but that's just the sign of a warm, tropical environment

no words to describe this man, simply amazing!!! the clouds are beautifuly painted, the textures and the atmosphere is absolutly perfect in every way!

where can i find a tutorial on how to make 360 scenes like this?? im very interested in trying to make one to see what comes up

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to RMirandinha [2011-05-19 08:51:06 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot! some clouds started out as Vue ones, they needed a lot of painting over though.

There's no tutorials so far. But one thing that's almost mandatory is knowing something about 3D. Getting as much done in 3D as possible makes it easier since you need a certain amount of "warping" at the edges of the artwork to compensate for the fact it gets "wrapped" back into this format. This warping is almost impossible to draw since it has to be mathematically calculated at the time of render (so long as the exact right camera settings are done - just a one-pixel margin of error can screw the whole thing up )
