Description My first Avatar-inspired deviation! yeah, only took like - a year and a half, but the timing seemed right and hopefully this turned out to be what is arguably one the the coolest pieces inspired by that movie anyone will ever see

Scroll down to zoom in
Scroll up to zoom out.
Or use Shift or Control keys to do either.
Click and drag to look around.

I could have gone for a ground view showing one of the many epic landscapes. But that can always be done later. I don't see much of the space scene seen very early on in the film, so that combined with the fact I promised many people my next 360 "Vue It" work was going to be a space one just meant it was the right theme to choose. It was at least lighter in polygon count than my first two that were very "tree-heavy" bumping their polygon counts into the several millions which resulted in countless crashes. Still had a fair amount with this but comparatively not as bad so bouts of swearing while making this was minimal

As for technical aspects, this was testing a version of Vue that can't actually render planets to its limits, that along with clever use of postwork allowed me to simulate a pretty authentic looking world below the viewer anyway. Rendering would have taken eons for me and so I got help, so I'll jump to credits for help before continuing:
SOULSSHINE Did the rendering after I made the scene, took WAY too long on my comp.
Smattila exported it into this Flash format after I had completed all the artwork.
Anyway, this required constant hopping between Vue 7 and Photoshop as some areas needed to be painted on and then brought back into the 3D world again to be rendered with the right amount of distortion and then composed in Photoshop again etc. I won't ramble on, Ill just say it was as hard to do as it looks, so just enjoy it!

Others in the "Vue It" series:
Vue it - Pine Shrine
Vue it - Christmas Village
Vue It - Holiday House
Vue It - Haunted Harvest

All artwork and animations in my gallery are my copyrighted property and are not to be used without my permission, this includes any screenshots of parts of the scene.

Now that looks like it took some time!
When you said 'something avatar related' I assumed you were going to do some kind of scenery, given the massive scope for ides there is... but this is awesome! Very realistic too- those cloud formations look great!

There's a lot of epic scenes in the movie, was hard to choose one. The others could always be done some other time I guess, since I wanted the third one of these to be space-themed anyway

Have I mentioned lately how much I love and adore your art? It shouldn't be legal that one person should hog all the talent for himself, but I suppose I can live with it since you share your amazing masterpieces when you've completed them. I love this. It's beautiful and crystal clear and just like your other two I spun it around and around looking for any details I might have missed on the first pass. I'm hesitant to call it my favorite of the three because the first two were beautiful too, so let's call it a tie for first. Simply perfect.

Chromattix In reply to Ylcarath [2011-05-19 08:36:28 +0000 UTC]

I think you have actually

Eh, well apparently I'm not hogging all the talent since tons of artists, even ones considerably less popular are doing way better for themselves than I do. Maybe it's down to subject matter I guess. I like what I do but it has little commercial value, so going by that I don't like to de-value my work and say that I am pretty content with what I put here, so it's always nice when it gets positive feedback

Yeah, sharp clear details are thanks to a very high resolution. It's always a bitch to work with but the higher the resolution, the better the quality

My first reaction was like

okay thats nice!

then I read your comment about 360 and looked again

OH MY GOD!!! Nice!? Thats Awesome! Something like that I wanted to see for a long time!

I don't know where to start but you did astonishing job with both planet's atomosphere and clouds. Sure they have touch of your style. But I personally like photorealistic (no biggy just a matter of taste). You just did'nt made them (I mean the click click and done technique), you made them which almost resembles natural current, turbulence and distribution. Hey It seems someone likes cumulonimbus alot.

Beside clouds the star field is good, the satellite I don't know the design is from the movie since it's still in my "to watch list" but I like the work. The 360 feature opened up new possiblities. Wait a sec I tried that before but you showed how it's really done. Astonishing job once again mate!

Irrevelent to that, 360 composition would be perfect for showing two characters face to face each other. Don't you think?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to Physco-Matter [2011-05-19 01:53:48 +0000 UTC]

Lol, thought it was just an ordinary scene eh?

I was hoping for no stylization in this one, I wanted everything to be as real as possible, but my current skill level (and software) are still limiting me. But at least my knowledge of the atmosphere is still intact, so I wanted realistic cloud formations, including cumulonimbus (probably one of the coolest things to be seen from orbit distance )

the stars were kept nice and simple here, that's why they look realistic The space station is indeed referenced from the movie, luckily one of the artists who worked on the movie was allowed to post a screenshot of it here [link] I relied pretty much on that alone to get mine accurate but there are differences I couldn't be bothered dealing with

Characters probably won't be done in these, 3D work is very important here so unless I could do characters in 3D I don't think it will happen. Plus characters don't give the sense of exploring and epic new world as scenery does, so the Vue it ones will always just be scenes

I'm glad I see another "Vue It" deviation of yours.
I accept that I like them the most.Everything's crystal clear and almost perfect to their limits. You and the ones who helped you with the rendering did a wonderful job!You really deserve congratulations!

The composition is beatiful. The colours blend very well with the scenery and the "space" concept you worked on.The overall view of it makes you believe that you're actually in space, travelling and entering another world. The clouds in the atmosphere and the ground are simply amazing.

Overall,I can't find more words to say how great this is.It fits the situation when the deviation "speaks for itself".Wonderful job.I'd like to see more of it in the future.

Chromattix In reply to 20Tourniquet02 [2011-05-18 13:46:54 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot, yep the details in these are always crisp and clear (unless you zoom in too much) since they have to be made at a much higher resolution than my normal work

Colour choice was pretty straightforward as I wanted them to be true to the movie. I may have intensified them just a bit to keep it a little more interesting though The clouds and land of the world below did require the most work and turned out to be my favourite part too.

There will be more in the future, probably not for a few months now since I need to "recover" from there with a series of regular, easier artworks between

Keep up with the awesome stuff!

Indeed. But still,it looks real!Your job cannot be underestimated! It is of extreemly high quality and very clear. Not even a picture from space would be that clear!

These are good news!
And yes, nobody told you to forget the "easier" tasks!

A medal of honour eh - deviantART should done a one-a-day "Gold Daily Deviation" that doesn't have to share glory with the others, a super-special kind of DD. That'll be the closest thing to a devious medal of honour

Glad you think so highly of this But don't sweat about making your own - there's tons of tutorials for that. True most yield fairly amateur results, but that's just to keep them beginner-friendly (only 4 years ago I remember getting frustrated at my inability to get these realistic planets all others were doing too )

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to Smattila [2011-05-18 12:11:06 +0000 UTC]

I wish I could upgrade Vue from 7 to 9. Technically I can afford it but it will make a pretty big dent in my savings. But what I'm more worried about is memory requirements. Vue 7 runs on pretty thing rails on my computer as it is - so with all the huge advancements made between 7 and 9 - I'm not sure if I'd even be able to run it without even more frequent crashes

But yes, a lot of postwork and "mixing" of separate renders was used to achieve the look of a true spherical world which Vue 7 doesn't actually support
